Chapter 4: The Man in the Shadows

Chapter 4: The Man in the Shadows
The anonymous caller set his phone on the table and stared through the floor-to-ceiling windows of his downtown office.
Below, reporters crowded outside Carter Memorial Medical Center.
Television helicopters circled overhead.
Every news station wanted answers.
He remained perfectly calm.
Then he opened a metal safe hidden behind a painting.

Inside were several folders labeled with dates, financial statements, and photographs.
One folder bore a single name.
Isabella Rossi.
He removed it, flipped through its contents, and quietly fed several pages into a paper shredder.
Within minutes, the documents had been reduced to confetti.
But before destroying the last page, he hesitated.
It contained a photograph of Marcus Thorne.
Someone had drawn a red circle around Khloe.
Across the bottom of the page were five handwritten words.
"Remove her before the birth."
The man stared at the note for several seconds.
Then he burned it.
At Carter Memorial Medical Center, Khloe woke to the gentle sound of rain tapping against the windows.
The pain had eased slightly, though every movement still reminded her of the attack.
Marcus was sitting nearby, reviewing emails on his tablet.
The moment he noticed her awake, he put it aside.
"Good morning."
She smiled faintly.
"I slept."
"You needed it."
"How long?"
"Almost twelve hours."
She looked toward the fetal monitor.
The steady heartbeat immediately eased her mind.
"Our baby?"
"Still strong."
Relief washed over her face.
Marcus leaned closer.
"The doctors are optimistic."
Khloe reached for his hand.
"I'm sorry."
He frowned.
"For what?"
"For putting you through this."
Marcus gently squeezed her fingers.
"You didn't."
"She came after me because of you."
"No."
His voice was firm.
"She attacked you because of her own choices."
Khloe looked down.
"I should've told you sooner."
Marcus's expression softened.
"Told me what?"
She took a deep breath.
"For months... Isabella kept cornering me whenever you weren't around."
Marcus's jaw tightened.
"What did she say?"
"She told me I wasn't strong enough for your world."
Khloe swallowed.
"She said you deserved someone who understood power."
Marcus remained silent.
"She kept saying I was only valuable because I was carrying your child."
His face darkened.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"I thought ignoring her would make it stop."
"It didn't."
"No."
"It got worse."
Meanwhile, Detective Laura Bennett reviewed hospital surveillance footage from the private elevator.
She paused the recording.
"There."
Security technician Ethan Morales zoomed in.
The image sharpened.
Isabella entered the elevator at 7:28 p.m.
A tall man wearing a black overcoat stepped inside behind her.
His face remained hidden beneath a baseball cap.
They never spoke.
Yet neither seemed surprised by the other's presence.
Detective Bennett frowned.
"Can you identify him?"
Ethan shook his head.
"The camera angle isn't good enough."
"What about facial recognition?"
"No usable image."
She sighed.
"What happens after they reach the VIP floor?"
Ethan switched to another camera.
The footage showed the elevator doors opening.
Isabella walked toward Khloe's suite.
The man turned in the opposite direction.
Toward the administrative offices.
Detective Bennett leaned closer.
"Stop."
Ethan froze the frame.
The man used an electronic keycard to enter a restricted hallway.
"Only hospital executives have access there," Ethan said.
Detective Bennett looked up.
"Or someone using a stolen keycard."
Chairman William Carter received Detective Bennett in his office an hour later.
She placed several photographs on his desk.
"We believe another individual entered the restricted wing just before the assault."
William studied the images carefully.
"I don't recognize him."
"He used executive-level access."
William pressed a button on his desk phone.
"Have Security pull yesterday's keycard activity."
His assistant responded immediately.
"Yes, sir."
Within ten minutes, Daniel Reyes arrived carrying a printed report.
William scanned it.
His expression slowly changed.
"This can't be right."
Detective Bennett looked over.
"What is it?"
William slid the report across the desk.
One executive keycard had been used in the restricted hallway at exactly 7:31 p.m.
The owner of that keycard was...
Marcus Thorne.
Detective Bennett looked surprised.
"Mr. Thorne was with guests downstairs."
"He never entered that hallway."
William agreed.
"I know."
"So either the system malfunctioned..."
"Or someone copied his credentials."
Daniel nodded grimly.
"That's possible."
William looked toward Detective Bennett.
"Find out who had access to Marcus's security badge."
Marcus sat beside Khloe's bed while she rested.
The room was peaceful.
For the first time in two days, they simply enjoyed each other's company.
Then Marcus's phone vibrated.
It was William.
"I need you in my office."
Marcus noticed his serious tone.
"Is something wrong?"
"Just come."
"I'll be there."
Marcus kissed Khloe's forehead before leaving.
"I'll only be gone a few minutes."
She smiled.
"I'll be here."
Twenty minutes later, Marcus entered William's office.
Detective Bennett and Daniel Reyes were already waiting.
Marcus immediately sensed the tension.
"What happened?"
William handed him the access report.
Marcus read it twice.
Then looked up.
"I wasn't anywhere near the executive hallway."
"We know," William said.
"But someone used your credentials."
Marcus frowned.
"My security badge never left my jacket."
Detective Bennett asked, "Who handled your coat during the gala?"
Marcus thought for a moment.
"The valet took it when we arrived."
"And afterward?"
"It stayed in the VIP lounge."
Daniel looked toward William.
"Anyone could've cloned the RFID chip during that time."
Marcus slowly realized what that meant.
"This wasn't random."
"No," Detective Bennett replied.
"We believe someone planned the attack well before Isabella walked into Khloe's suite."
Silence filled the room.
Marcus stared at the report.
"If they copied my credentials..."
"They wanted access to restricted areas."
"Or they wanted to frame me."
Detective Bennett nodded.
"Both possibilities are still on the table."
Across town, Isabella sat alone in a holding cell.
Her expensive red gown had been replaced with a plain gray detention uniform.
The confidence she wore at the gala was gone.
A correctional officer approached.
"You have one phone call."
Isabella immediately dialed a number she had memorized years ago.
It rang twice.
A familiar voice answered.
"I told you not to call this number."
"They know everything," Isabella whispered.
"The cameras."
"The witnesses."
"The police."
There was a brief silence.
Then the voice spoke again.
"Did you mention my name?"
"No."
"Good."
"They're asking about the man in the elevator."
Another pause.
Then the voice became ice cold.
"You never saw anyone."
"But—"
"If you want any chance of walking free someday..."
The caller's tone hardened.
"...you'll keep your mouth shut."
The line went dead.
Isabella stared at the phone in horror.
For the first time, she realized she wasn't being protected.
She was being abandoned.
And somewhere deep inside Carter Memorial Medical Center, an employee quietly removed a tiny flash drive from a secure computer.
Without saying a word, the employee slipped it into a pocket and walked toward the staff exit.

The surveillance footage wasn't the only evidence.
Someone had just stolen something even more valuable.
