Chapter 18: Vivian's Escape

Chapter 18: Vivian's Escape
Rain poured over the mountains as Vivian Hale gripped the steering wheel of an old pickup truck.
The engine rattled with every mile, but it was still running.
That was all that mattered.
She had escaped.
Hours earlier, while Charles Whitmore was being arrested at the farmhouse, one of his remaining associates had panicked and fled the hunting cabin. In the confusion, Vivian had forced open a weak basement window and slipped into the woods before anyone noticed she was gone.

She had walked for nearly six hours before a passing rancher found her on a deserted road and offered her a ride to the nearest town.
Now she was heading back to the city.
Not to hide.
To finish what she had started.
At Carter Memorial Medical Center, Detective Laura Bennett received a call from the state police.
"We found Vivian Hale."
Bennett stood so quickly her chair rolled backward.
"Is she safe?"
"She appears to be."
"Where is she now?"
"Driving toward the city."
Bennett smiled with relief.
"Tell her not to stop anywhere."
"Already done."
William Carter was reviewing legal documents when Bennett rushed into his office.
"We found Vivian."
William slowly lowered the papers.
"Thank God."
"She's on her way here."
For the first time in days, William smiled.
"I wasn't sure I'd ever see her again."
Marcus, standing by the window, let out a long breath.
"Maybe this nightmare is finally ending."
Bennett wasn't so certain.
"Linda Foster is still missing."
The room fell quiet again.
Across town, Linda Foster checked out of a small roadside motel.
She wore jeans, a baseball cap, and sunglasses.
Nothing about her attracted attention.
She climbed into a silver sedan and drove away.
Instead of heading toward the airport or the interstate, she drove in the opposite direction.
Toward Carter Memorial.
She wasn't running anymore.
She was searching.
An hour later, Vivian's pickup truck rolled into the hospital parking garage.
William was already waiting.
The moment Vivian stepped out of the truck, he embraced her tightly.
Neither of them spoke for several seconds.
Finally, William stepped back.
"I thought I'd lost you."
Vivian smiled wearily.
"You've been trying to get rid of me for thirty years."
William laughed despite everything.
"I've never been successful."
Marcus and Khloe joined them moments later.
Khloe gently hugged Vivian.
"Thank you."
Vivian looked confused.
"For what?"
"For protecting Grace."
Vivian's eyes filled with tears.
"I only kept a promise."
Grace arrived shortly afterward under police escort.
The moment she saw Vivian, she ran forward.
They embraced without saying a word.
Finally, Grace whispered,
"I thought I'd never see you again."
Vivian stroked her hair.
"I'm not going anywhere."
Later that afternoon, everyone gathered in William's private conference room.
The atmosphere was calmer than it had been in weeks.
Vivian placed a thick envelope on the table.
"I've been carrying this for years."
William looked surprised.
"I thought the DNA report was everything."
"It wasn't."
She slid the envelope toward Detective Bennett.
"Open it."
Inside were dozens of handwritten notes.
Receipts.
Meeting calendars.
Bank records.
And a small leather notebook.
Bennett carefully turned the pages.
"What is this?"
Vivian answered quietly.
"My journal."
"You documented everything Charles did."
Vivian nodded.
"Every suspicious meeting."
"Every payment."
"Every lie."
Marcus looked amazed.
"You kept records for seven years?"
"I hoped I'd never need them."
Bennett smiled.
"You just made the prosecution's case much easier."
Daniel Reyes entered carrying fresh forensic reports.
"More good news."
Bennett looked up.
"What did you find?"
"We recovered deleted files from Linda Foster's office computer."
"Anything useful?"
Daniel nodded.
"Very."
He connected his laptop to the conference room screen.
A spreadsheet appeared.
It listed dozens of encrypted payments.
Each transfer had one recipient.
Linda Foster.
Each payment came from shell companies controlled by Charles Whitmore.
Marcus folded his arms.
"So she wasn't just helping him."
"She was on his payroll."
Vivian studied the spreadsheet.
Then she pointed to one transaction.
"Stop."
Daniel zoomed in.
"What?"
"This payment."
"It wasn't from Charles."
Bennett frowned.
"Are you sure?"
Vivian nodded immediately.
"I recognize that company."
William looked at her.
"Who owns it?"
Vivian slowly shook her head.
"No one."
"What?"
"It was dissolved years ago."
Daniel looked puzzled.
"Then how was it sending money?"
Vivian's expression became serious.
"Because someone recreated it."
She looked directly at Bennett.
"And only one person would know how."
Before she could explain, an officer burst into the room.
"Detective!"
Bennett stood.
"What happened?"
"We found Linda Foster's car."
"Where?"
"In the underground parking garage."
Marcus frowned.
"She's here?"
The officer nodded.
"We searched the vehicle."
"Was she inside?"
"No."
"What did you find?"
The officer handed Bennett a small evidence bag.
Inside was a single hospital access badge.
The name printed across it made everyone freeze.
Dr. Amelia Brooks
Khloe immediately shook her head.
"No."
Marcus looked at the badge.
"Someone stole it."
Bennett nodded slowly.
"Probably."
William's expression darkened.
"Or someone wants us to believe Amelia is involved."
Vivian quietly looked toward the hospital hallway.
"No."
Everyone turned toward her.
"I don't think this is a frame-up."
"Why?" Bennett asked.
Vivian closed her eyes, searching her memory.
"The night Charles first approached Linda..."
She opened them again.
"There was someone else in the room."
Marcus leaned forward.
"Who?"
"I never saw the person's face."
"But I heard Charles thank them."
Bennett waited.
Vivian spoke the name she had never forgotten.
"'Doctor.'"
Silence settled over the room.
No one wanted to believe it.
Dr. Amelia Brooks had cared for Khloe from the beginning.
She had saved both Khloe and the baby more than once.
She had protected Michael Donovan.
She had stood beside them through every crisis.
Marcus slowly shook his head.
"I don't believe it."
Before anyone could respond, the conference room door opened.
Dr. Amelia Brooks walked in carrying Khloe's latest medical chart.
She smiled warmly.
"I have wonderful news."
She noticed everyone's expressions.
The room had gone completely silent.
Then her eyes fell on the evidence bag.
On the hospital badge bearing her name.
Her smile disappeared.
"What happened?"
Detective Bennett slowly picked up the bag.
"Dr. Brooks..."
She paused.
"We need to ask you a few questions."
Amelia looked from one face to another.
Confusion slowly turned into concern.
And outside the conference room, hidden just beyond the partially closed door, a woman quietly listened to every word.
Linda Foster smiled to herself.
May you like
The trap had been set.
Now all she had to do was make sure no one realized who the real doctor Charles had been talking about.
