Chapter 9: The Brother Who Came Back From the Dead

Chapter 9: The Brother Who Came Back From the Dead

Detective Marcus Hale was already running before the call ended.

"Ryan!"

His voice echoed through the bullpen.

"Get the car."

Ryan Foster grabbed his jacket without asking a single question.

"What happened?"

"Possible sighting."

"Michael Bennett."

Three minutes later...

Their unmarked SUV sped through downtown Chicago with its lights flashing.

Marcus called the nurse back using the clinic's direct line.

"This is Detective Hale again."

"I need every detail."

The nurse answered immediately.

"He arrived just before noon."

"How did he look?"

"Exhausted."

"Thin."

"He was bleeding through the bandages on his side."

Marcus glanced at Ryan.

"Gunshot wound."

The nurse continued.

"He refused to tell us his name."

"But when I asked for emergency contact information..."

"He froze."

"What happened then?"

"He looked toward the front door."

"As if he expected someone to walk in."

Marcus frowned.

"Did he?"

"No."

"But he kept checking the windows."

"He was terrified."

Ryan increased their speed.

Marcus asked another question.

"Did he leave anything behind?"

The nurse hesitated.

"Actually..."

"Yes."

"What?"

"A leather notebook."

Marcus's pulse quickened.

"You still have it?"

"We locked it in our office."

"We thought he might come back."

"Don't let anyone touch it."

"We'll be there in five minutes."

St. Anne's Community Clinic...

The small waiting room was nearly empty.

Marcus flashed his badge.

The head nurse hurried toward him.

"I've been expecting you."

She led them into a private office.

A worn brown leather notebook sat inside a clear evidence bag.

Marcus carefully picked it up.

No name.

No markings.

Only a deep scratch across the cover.

Ryan looked over his shoulder.

"You think it's his?"

Marcus slowly opened the first page.

Immediately...

They both recognized the handwriting.

Michael Bennett.

The writing was neat.

Precise.

The first sentence made Marcus stop breathing.

If you're reading this, Preston found me first... or I'm already dead.

Ryan whispered,

"My God..."

Marcus turned the page.

My name is Michael Bennett.

Everything my family believes about my death is a lie.

Marcus looked at Ryan.

Neither of them spoke.

He kept reading.

Three years ago, I didn't fall off a boat.

I was shot.

By someone I trusted.

Ryan slowly sat down.

Marcus continued.

The official story was created before I even lost consciousness.

Someone wanted me legally dead.

Someone powerful.

Marcus turned another page.

His heartbeat grew louder.

I survived because a fisherman found me drifting near the shoreline.

He never contacted the police.

He believed the men searching for me wanted me dead.

Ryan looked stunned.

"So someone rescued him..."

Marcus nodded without taking his eyes off the notebook.

I spent months recovering under another identity.

When I finally returned to Chicago...

I discovered my own funeral had already happened.

Marcus whispered,

"Incredible..."

Michael continued writing.

My father accepted five million dollars from my life insurance policy.

Preston became richer overnight.

Neither of them ever searched for me.

Ryan slowly leaned back.

"They knew."

Marcus nodded.

"Or at least suspected."

He turned another page.

I started gathering evidence.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because I wanted Evelyn and Sophie safe.

Marcus stopped reading.

Ryan looked up.

"He was protecting them."

Marcus nodded.

"From the beginning."

Meanwhile...

Back at the hospital...

Sophie had finally been cleared to leave the following morning.

She was happily packing the crayons nurses had given her.

I smiled.

"Looks like someone made friends."

She giggled.

"They said I was brave."

"You were."

She became quiet.

"Mommy..."

"Yes?"

"Do you think Uncle Michael is alive?"

The question caught me completely off guard.

"What makes you ask that?"

She shrugged.

"I had a dream."

I smiled softly.

"A dream?"

"He said he wasn't gone."

I brushed her hair behind her ear.

"Dreams can feel very real."

She nodded.

"But this one wasn't scary."

Before I could answer...

Someone knocked.

A nurse stepped inside.

"Mrs. Carter..."

"There's a man asking for you."

My heart skipped.

"Who?"

"He wouldn't give his name."

"He said..."

She looked confused.

"...tell Evelyn her favorite brother kept his promise."

Everything around me seemed to stop.

Favorite brother.

Only one person had ever called himself that.

Michael.

I stood so quickly the chair tipped over.

"Where is he?"

The nurse pointed toward the emergency exit.

"He left when he saw security."

I ran.

Down the hallway.

Past the nurses' station.

Through the emergency doors.

Outside...

Rain poured across the parking lot.

There was no one there.

Only rows of cars.

Empty sidewalks.

And one folded piece of paper lying beneath the windshield wiper of my car.

My hands trembled as I picked it up.

It was folded twice.

Inside...

Only six handwritten words.

Don't trust Dad. Not anymore.

Beneath the message...

A small pressed four-leaf clover had been taped to the paper.

Tears instantly filled my eyes.

Nobody else in the world would understand its meaning.

When we were children...

Michael used to hide four-leaf clovers inside my schoolbooks before every big exam.

He always said they brought courage.

He never told anyone else.

Never.

This wasn't a coincidence.

This wasn't a trick.

Michael Bennett had been here.

Across town...

Marcus continued reading the notebook.

Each page exposed another secret.

Another crime.

Another lie.

Then he reached a page marked only with today's date.

Unlike the others...

It had been written in obvious haste.

The ink was smeared.

As if Michael had been interrupted.

Marcus read aloud.

If Preston learns where Daniel hid the evidence...

He'll kill again.

Ryan looked toward him.

Marcus kept reading.

There is one person Preston fears more than the police.

Ryan frowned.

"Who?"

Marcus turned the page.

There was only one sentence.

Written in large block letters.

Victor Sloan doesn't work for Preston.

Ryan looked confused.

"Then who does he work for?"

Marcus slowly turned the final page.

Taped inside the back cover...

Was an old family photograph.

Charles Bennett.

His wife.

Young Evelyn.

Young Preston.

Young Michael.

Standing beside them...

Was another man.

Smiling.

His arm resting on Charles Bennett's shoulder.

Marcus stared at the picture.

Then looked at the name written beneath it.

His blood ran cold.

Because the man wasn't a family friend.

He wasn't a neighbor.

He wasn't a business partner.

He was...

Judge Harold Whitaker.

The same federal judge scheduled to preside over Preston Bennett's criminal case in just three weeks.

Marcus slowly closed the notebook.

Then he whispered to himself...

May you like

"This family has been planning something..."

"...for a very long time."
