Chapter 8: The Man in the Black SUV

Chapter 8: The Man in the Black SUV
The room went completely silent.
Detective Marcus Hale read the report twice.
Then a third time.
The photograph on the passport never changed.

It was Michael Bennett.
Older.
A little thinner.
A short beard covered part of his face.
But there was no mistaking him.
The scar running from his left ear to the corner of his jaw was unmistakable.
Ryan Foster stared over Marcus's shoulder.
"That's him."
Marcus nodded slowly.
"It certainly looks that way."
Rachel Kim frowned.
"But the passport is fake."
Marcus looked up.
"Fake name."
"Real face."
"Those are two very different things."
He grabbed his jacket.
"Where's the SUV?"
"Near Elgin."
"Illinois State Police secured the scene."
Marcus turned to Ryan.
"Let's go."
Forty-five minutes later...
The black SUV sat behind yellow crime-scene tape.
Rain had begun to fall.
Drops bounced off the windshield.
Forensic technicians moved carefully around the vehicle.
Marcus crouched beside the driver's door.
The blood wasn't everywhere.
Only a few small drops.
Enough to suggest an injury.
Not enough to suggest death.
Rachel joined him.
"Crime lab says it's fresh."
"Less than twelve hours old."
Marcus looked inside the SUV.
The interior was spotless.
Too spotless.
Someone had wiped every surface.
Every handle.
Every button.
Professional.
Whoever abandoned the vehicle knew exactly what they were doing.
A state trooper walked over carrying an evidence bag.
"This was under the passenger seat."
Marcus looked inside.
A disposable cell phone.
Powered off.
Rachel slipped on fresh gloves.
She pressed the power button.
The phone lit up immediately.
No lock screen.
No contacts.
Only one saved voice message.
Marcus exchanged a look with Ryan.
Rachel pressed play.
Static filled the speaker.
Then a man's voice.
Calm.
Controlled.
"If you're hearing this..."
"...I'm already gone."
Marcus recognized the voice instantly.
Daniel Ruiz.
The security manager.
Everyone in the parking lot became still.
Daniel continued.
"I don't know who will find this."
"But if it's the police..."
"You're looking at the wrong brother."
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
Ryan slowly looked at him.
Daniel's voice continued.
"Preston is dangerous."
"But Michael..."
A long burst of static interrupted the recording.
Then...
"...Michael has been trying to stop him for years."
Marcus froze.
Rachel stopped breathing.
The recording resumed.
"If anything happens to me..."
"Find Michael before Preston does."
The message ended.
No one spoke.
Rain continued falling against the SUV.
Ryan finally whispered,
"So Michael isn't helping Preston."
Marcus nodded slowly.
"He may be running from him."
Back at Northwestern Memorial Hospital...
Sophie was sitting up in bed coloring in a children's activity book.
She looked much stronger.
She smiled when I walked back into the room.
"Look, Mommy."
She held up a picture.
It showed a little girl holding hands with her mother.
Behind them stood a large brown dog.
I smiled.
"Who's the dog?"
"Our protector."
She said it so casually that I laughed.
"We don't have a dog."
"I know."
"But maybe someday."
I kissed the top of her head.
"I'd like that."
A soft knock interrupted us.
The door opened.
Olivia Grant stepped inside.
Still dressed in her navy business suit.
She looked exhausted.
I immediately stood.
"What are you doing here?"
"I asked the nurses if I could speak with you."
"I'll leave if you want."
I hesitated.
Then nodded toward the chair.
"Five minutes."
She sat down slowly.
"I resigned."
I blinked.
"You what?"
"I'm no longer Preston Bennett's attorney."
"Why?"
She looked directly at me.
"Because I discovered my client lied to me."
She reached into her briefcase.
Pulled out a sealed envelope.
"I think this belongs with the investigation."
I didn't touch it.
"What is it?"
"A copy of Preston's private legal file."
I stared at her.
"Why would you bring me this?"
"Because if I give it directly to police..."
"...someone inside my own firm may warn him first."
My pulse quickened.
"You don't trust your partners?"
"No."
"One of them personally recommended Preston."
She slid the envelope across the table.
"I made copies."
"They can't make this disappear anymore."
I carefully picked it up.
Inside were contracts.
Financial statements.
Corporate documents.
Then...
One photograph.
It showed Preston shaking hands with a middle-aged man wearing an expensive charcoal suit.
The man's face looked familiar.
Very familiar.
Then it hit me.
I had seen him before.
At Michael's memorial service.
Standing beside my father.
I looked back at Olivia.
"Who is this?"
She answered quietly.
"His name is Victor Sloan."
"He's a corporate fixer."
"What does that mean?"
She swallowed.
"When powerful people need problems to disappear..."
"They hire Victor Sloan."
Across town...
Marcus returned to headquarters.
The first thing he did was run Victor Sloan's name.
The computer produced dozens of sealed civil cases.
Confidential settlements.
Bankruptcy restructurings.
Corporate fraud investigations.
Nothing criminal.
Nothing provable.
Exactly what a professional fixer would want.
Rachel walked in carrying another folder.
"You'll want this."
Marcus opened it.
The lab had identified the blood from the SUV.
His eyes moved straight to the DNA result.
He stopped reading.
Ryan noticed.
"What?"
Marcus slowly lowered the report.
"The blood belongs to Michael Bennett."
Ryan looked relieved.
"So he was in the SUV."
Marcus nodded.
"Yes."
"But that's not the strange part."
"What is?"
Marcus handed him the DNA report.
Ryan read the highlighted sentence.
His eyes widened.
The blood sample showed signs of recent surgery.
Specifically...
A gunshot wound treated within the last forty-eight hours.
Ryan looked up.
"Someone shot him."
Marcus nodded.
"And he's still alive."
At that exact moment...
The phone on Marcus's desk rang.
He answered immediately.
"Hale."
A nervous voice came through the line.
"This is St. Anne's Community Clinic."
Marcus stood.
"Go on."
"I think..."
The nurse hesitated.
"...I think the man you're looking for was just here."
Marcus's heartbeat quickened.
"Michael Bennett?"
"He didn't give a name."
"But..."
She lowered her voice.
"He has the exact same scar as the man on the news."
Marcus grabbed his keys.
"Is he still there?"
"No."
"He left five minutes ago."
"Did he say anything?"
The nurse took a deep breath.
"Only one thing."
"What did he say?"
"He looked terrified."
May you like
"And before walking out..."
"...he begged us not to tell Preston he'd been there."
