Chapter 5: The Envelope That Could Destroy Everything

Chapter 5: The Envelope That Could Destroy Everything

I stared at my phone.

The call had ended.

But Daniel Ruiz's final words kept echoing in my head.

Not the only evidence.

There was something else.

Something hidden.

Something important enough that someone had nearly killed a man to keep it from being found.

I immediately called Detective Marcus Hale.

He answered before the first ring finished.

"Marcus Hale."

"It's Evelyn."

"I just got a call from Daniel Ruiz."

There was a brief silence.

"What did he say?"

"He remembered another piece of evidence."

"What kind?"

"He didn't know."

"He only said Preston dropped an envelope."

"And whoever attacked him wasn't searching for the surveillance footage."

"They were looking for the envelope."

Marcus didn't respond right away.

When he finally spoke, his voice had become noticeably sharper.

"Don't tell anyone else."

"I'm sending officers back to the hotel."

"They'll lock the building down."

"Do you think they'll find it?"

"I hope so."

"But if Preston realizes we're looking for something..."

"He may have already sent someone to retrieve it."

The call ended.

I looked toward Sophie's room.

She was sleeping peacefully.

For the first time since the nightmare began, she looked comfortable.

A nurse quietly adjusted her blanket.

"You can stay with her tonight."

I smiled faintly.

"Thank you."

Before I could sit down...

The elevator doors opened again.

A young woman stepped out carrying a leather briefcase.

She looked to be in her early thirties.

Professional.

Confident.

She walked directly toward Preston.

"I'm Olivia Grant."

"Mr. Bennett's attorney."

Of course.

Preston had called a lawyer.

Olivia wasted no time.

She looked directly at Detective Hale's partner, who had remained behind.

"My client will not answer further questions."

The officer nodded.

"That's your right."

Olivia turned toward Preston.

"Did you say anything after I told you not to?"

Preston smirked.

"Nothing important."

She wasn't convinced.

She glanced around the hallway.

Then her eyes landed on me.

For just a second...

She studied my face.

Not with anger.

Not with contempt.

With curiosity.

Almost concern.

Then she looked away.

Something about that expression stayed with me.

It didn't match the confident defense attorney she'd pretended to be.

Meanwhile...

Across town...

Three police cruisers pulled into the underground parking garage beneath the Whitmore Hotel.

Detective Hale stepped out first.

Yellow crime-scene tape now surrounded the ballroom.

Most of the decorations had already been removed.

The celebration was over.

Only evidence remained.

Mr. Whitmore met him near the service entrance.

"My entire staff has been accounted for."

Marcus nodded.

"What about maintenance?"

"They've gone home."

"And security?"

"Only two officers are left."

Marcus looked toward the surveillance office.

"What about Daniel's desk?"

"No one's touched it."

"Good."

Together they entered the small office.

It looked exactly as Daniel had described.

Papers scattered everywhere.

A broken computer monitor.

Blood on the floor.

A smashed coffee mug.

Signs of a violent struggle.

Crime Scene Investigator Rachel Kim carefully dusted a filing cabinet for fingerprints.

She looked up.

"We've recovered prints from the desk."

"Mostly Daniel's."

"And?"

She held up a plastic evidence sleeve.

"One unidentified print."

Marcus examined it.

"Run it."

Rachel nodded.

Already done."

"It doesn't match hotel staff."

Marcus walked toward Daniel's desk.

He opened each drawer.

Nothing.

Cabinet.

Nothing.

Bookshelf.

Nothing.

Then he remembered Daniel's words.

Preston dropped an envelope.

Dropped.

Not hid.

Not handed off.

Dropped.

He looked at the floor.

The office had industrial gray carpet.

Except beneath the desk.

A small section had been replaced recently.

Different shade.

Different texture.

Marcus crouched down.

He pressed against the edge.

It lifted slightly.

"Rachel."

She hurried over.

"What is it?"

"I think we found something."

Using a small utility knife, she carefully lifted the carpet tile.

Beneath it...

Lay a thin manila envelope.

Perfectly hidden.

Marcus slowly picked it up.

No name.

No writing.

Only a single red wax seal.

Rachel photographed it before he opened it.

Inside...

Was a stack of photographs.

Marcus flipped through the first few.

His expression changed immediately.

Every picture showed Preston.

But not at the wedding.

Different dates.

Different locations.

Different women.

Some appeared frightened.

Others were crying.

One photograph showed Preston violently grabbing a young woman outside an office building.

Another showed him shoving someone into a black SUV.

Rachel frowned.

"These aren't random."

Marcus nodded.

"No."

"Someone was documenting him."

Then he reached the bottom of the envelope.

There was a flash drive.

And a folded note.

Marcus carefully unfolded it.

Only one sentence had been written.

If anything happens to me, give this to the police.

Signed.

Daniel Ruiz.

Marcus immediately inserted the flash drive into an evidence laptop.

A folder appeared.

BENNETT.

Inside were dozens of video files.

Bank records.

Emails.

Phone logs.

Employment contracts.

Rachel stared at the screen.

"This goes way beyond tonight."

Marcus clicked one video.

Security footage appeared.

A luxury apartment lobby.

Timestamp...

Eight months earlier.

Preston entered.

A young blonde woman followed.

They disappeared into an elevator.

Forty minutes later...

Only Preston came back down.

The woman never appeared again.

Rachel looked confused.

"Where did she go?"

Marcus clicked another file.

It was a missing-person report.

The same woman.

Reported missing the following morning.

Neither of them spoke.

The room suddenly felt much colder.

Back at the hospital...

I finally sat beside Sophie's bed.

She stirred slightly.

Her eyes slowly opened.

"Mommy?"

"I'm here."

She smiled sleepily.

"Can we go home tomorrow?"

I brushed a strand of hair away from her face.

"Soon."

"I promise."

She looked thoughtful.

"Is Uncle Preston going to jail?"

The question caught me off guard.

"I don't know yet."

She stared at the ceiling.

"I think he should."

I blinked.

"Why?"

"Because bad people keep hurting others."

"If nobody stops them..."

"They just keep doing it."

For an eight-year-old...

Those words carried more wisdom than most adults ever learned.

I kissed her forehead.

"You don't have to worry about that anymore."

She closed her eyes again.

"I know."

"You'll stop him."

A knock interrupted us.

I turned.

Detective Hale stood in the doorway.

His face was unreadable.

He stepped inside and quietly closed the door.

"Evelyn..."

His voice was lower than usual.

"We found Daniel's envelope."

I stood up.

"And?"

He hesitated.

Then he handed me one photograph.

The moment I looked at it...

My knees nearly gave out.

It wasn't a stranger.

It wasn't one of the missing women.

It wasn't Preston.

It was me.

Standing outside my office.

Taken nearly two years earlier.

I had no idea anyone had been watching me.

Written across the back of the photograph...

In Preston's unmistakable handwriting...

May you like

Were six chilling words.

She knows too much. Watch her.
