Chapter 11: The Lighthouse

Chapter 11: The Lighthouse

Detective Marcus Hale didn't waste another second.

"Ryan!"

His voice thundered across the bullpen.

"Call SWAT."

"Notify Illinois State Police."

"I want every available unit heading to North Harbor Lighthouse."

Ryan was already dialing.

Within seconds, radios across the city came alive.

Marcus grabbed his jacket, Michael's notebook, and the evidence file.

As he reached the elevator, his phone rang again.

It was me.

"Evelyn."

His voice remained calm despite the adrenaline surging through him.

"Marcus?"

"I just received a text."

"What kind of text?"

"It came from Michael's number."

Marcus stopped walking.

"What did it say?"

I looked down at my phone.

Only three words appeared on the screen.

Trust no Bennett.

Marcus closed his eyes.

"Don't reply."

"I wasn't planning to."

"I'm sending officers to the hospital."

"Someone may try to reach you."

"I'll stay with Sophie."

"No."

His voice became firm.

"I need you somewhere safer."

Fifteen minutes later...

Chicago Police escorted Sophie and me through a private hospital exit.

A convoy of unmarked vehicles surrounded us.

Two patrol cars led the way.

Two followed behind.

Officer Melissa Grant sat beside me.

She watched every passing vehicle carefully.

"You're under protective custody now."

I nodded.

"What about Sophie?"

"She'll stay with you."

I looked out the window.

Rain continued to pour.

Something about the weather made the entire city feel darker.

More dangerous.

Meanwhile...

North Harbor Lighthouse stood alone against Lake Michigan.

The old brick tower had been abandoned for nearly twenty years.

Waves crashed violently against the rocks below.

Marcus was the first to arrive.

Police SUVs filled the narrow access road.

Flashlights cut through the heavy rain.

A patrol officer ran toward him.

"Detective!"

"What do we have?"

"We found blood."

Marcus followed him.

Fresh blood stained the wooden steps leading into the lighthouse.

Not much.

But enough.

Crime Scene Investigator Rachel Kim crouched beside it.

"It hasn't washed away yet."

"So it was recent."

Marcus nodded.

"What about shell casings?"

Rachel pointed toward the doorway.

"Three."

"Ninemillimeter."

Marcus slowly climbed the stairs.

His flashlight swept across the dark interior.

Broken windows.

Rotting wood.

Rusted iron stairs.

Then...

A voice echoed from above.

"Detective!"

Marcus looked up.

Ryan stood on the second level.

"You need to see this."

Marcus hurried upstairs.

Ryan pointed toward the wall.

Someone had written a message using blood.

Large.

Uneven letters.

HE KNOWS.

Marcus stared at the words.

"He?"

Ryan swallowed.

"Or maybe..."

"...Dad."

Before either man could speak again...

A K-9 officer shouted from outside.

"We found someone!"

Marcus ran.

Officers gathered near the shoreline.

A man lay unconscious beside the rocks.

His clothes were soaked.

Blood covered his shirt.

Marcus immediately recognized the scar.

"Michael."

He dropped to one knee.

"Michael!"

Michael's eyes fluttered open.

Barely.

He looked directly at Marcus.

"You came..."

Marcus pressed gauze against the gunshot wound.

"Stay with me."

"Ambulance!"

Sirens echoed in the distance.

Michael grabbed Marcus's sleeve.

His grip was surprisingly strong.

"You have to listen."

"I'm listening."

"My father..."

He coughed violently.

Blood stained his lips.

"He isn't protecting Preston."

Marcus frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"Preston..."

"...works for him."

Marcus felt his heartbeat stop.

"What?"

Michael struggled to breathe.

"For years..."

"I thought Preston was the problem."

Another painful cough.

"I was wrong."

Marcus leaned closer.

"Then who?"

Michael's voice became almost impossible to hear.

"Our father..."

"...built everything."

Marcus stared at him.

"The women."

"The money."

"The blackmail."

"The companies."

"It was never Preston's empire."

"It was Dad's."

Marcus looked at Ryan.

Neither of them spoke.

Michael squeezed Marcus's sleeve again.

"There are more victims."

"Where?"

"The warehouse..."

"Which warehouse?"

Michael's eyes slowly drifted toward the lake.

"Pier..."

His voice faded.

Marcus leaned closer.

"Pier what?"

Michael whispered one final word.

"Seven."

Then...

His hand slipped away.

The paramedics arrived seconds later.

One checked Michael's pulse.

Another started CPR.

Marcus stood frozen.

The medic looked up after several agonizing minutes.

"We have a pulse."

Relief swept across everyone standing there.

"He's alive."

The ambulance rushed away with lights flashing.

Marcus watched until it disappeared into the storm.

At the same time...

Miles away...

Charles Bennett quietly parked his black sedan outside an abandoned warehouse.

A man stepped from the shadows.

Victor Sloan.

Charles handed him a sealed envelope.

"Is everything inside?"

Victor nodded.

"Every original document."

"What about Daniel's copies?"

"We're still looking."

Charles looked toward the lake.

"They found Michael."

Victor's expression hardened.

"I know."

"He talked."

Charles sighed.

"He always was sentimental."

Victor crossed his arms.

"Should I finish it?"

Charles shook his head.

"No."

"Not yet."

"What changed?"

Charles smiled.

Cold.

Patient.

"The police still don't know where the real evidence is."

Victor frowned.

"They found the flash drive."

Charles laughed quietly.

"No."

"They found the decoy."

Victor stared at him.

"Decoy?"

Charles nodded.

"The real archive..."

"...has never been inside the hotel."

He looked toward the dark warehouse behind them.

"It's been here all along."

The next morning...

Detective Hale barely had time to remove his wet jacket before Rachel Kim burst into his office.

She was carrying a sealed forensic report.

"You'll want to sit down."

Marcus remained standing.

"What is it?"

"We finally identified the blood found inside the abandoned SUV."

Marcus frowned.

"I thought it belonged to Michael."

"It did."

Rachel nodded.

"But there was another sample."

Marcus looked at the report.

His eyes narrowed.

"Whose?"

Rachel slowly answered.

"It belongs to a child."

Marcus felt a knot form in his stomach.

"What child?"

Rachel turned the final page.

The DNA profile had just been matched through a national missing persons database.

The name printed across the report made Marcus go completely still.

It wasn't one of the missing women.

It wasn't anyone connected to Daniel Ruiz.

It wasn't a stranger.

It was...

Sophia Carter.

Sophie's full legal name.

Marcus looked up in disbelief.

"That's impossible."

Rachel's face had turned pale.

"The lab ran the test twice."

Marcus's pulse raced.

Sophie had never been inside that SUV.

Had she?

May you like

Or...

Had someone been watching her long before the wedding?
