Chapter 7: The Brother Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Chapter 7: The Brother Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Detective Marcus Hale didn't speak.

For several seconds, he simply stared at the evidence report in his hand.

"There has to be a mistake."

The crime lab technician answered immediately.

"We thought the same thing."

"So we ran it three times."

Marcus looked down again.

"You're telling me these fingerprints belong to Michael Bennett?"

"Yes."

"The match is ninety-nine point nine-eight percent."

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

"Michael Bennett died three years ago."

"According to the official records..."

"Yes."

The technician hesitated.

"But fingerprints don't lie."

Marcus slowly ended the call.

Olivia Grant was still standing across from him.

She could tell something had changed.

"What happened?"

Marcus looked up.

"Do you know Michael Bennett?"

Her face went blank.

"Preston's older brother?"

"Yes."

"I've never met him."

"I thought he died."

"So did everyone else."

Olivia frowned.

"What are you saying?"

Marcus picked up the fingerprint report.

"I'm saying a dead man just left fingerprints at an attempted murder scene."

Across town...

I was helping Sophie finish her breakfast when another detective knocked on the hospital room door.

He carried a thick manila folder.

"Mrs. Carter?"

"Yes?"

"My name is Detective Ryan Foster."

"I'm assisting Detective Hale."

He placed the folder on the small table beside my chair.

"I need to ask you a few questions about your family."

I nodded.

"Anything."

He opened the file.

"Tell me about Michael Bennett."

The name hit me like a freight train.

I hadn't heard it spoken aloud in years.

"My oldest brother."

"What was he like?"

I smiled sadly.

"He was nothing like Preston."

"He was kind."

"Patient."

"He looked after me when we were kids."

Ryan wrote something down.

"When did you last see him?"

"The day of his funeral."

He looked at me.

"I know that sounds strange."

"No."

"Go on."

I took a slow breath.

"The casket was closed."

"They said the accident was too severe."

"What kind of accident?"

"A boating accident on Lake Michigan."

"They never recovered his body."

Ryan stopped writing.

"They never found him?"

"No."

"But the Coast Guard declared him legally dead."

"Who identified him?"

"I... don't know."

That answer seemed to interest him.

He made another note.

"What was Michael's relationship with Preston?"

I looked toward the window.

"They argued constantly."

"About what?"

"Money."

"Business."

"Our parents."

"Everything."

Ryan leaned forward.

"Who usually won those arguments?"

"Michael."

"Because he always had proof."

I frowned.

"He kept records."

"What kind of records?"

"I don't know."

"He never told me."

"But I remember him saying something once."

"What?"

"'One day everyone will know who Preston really is.'"

Ryan slowly closed the folder.

"Did he ever tell anyone else?"

"I don't think so."

He thanked me and quietly left the room.

The moment the door closed...

I couldn't stop thinking.

Michael.

The only person in my family who had ever defended me.

The only one who ever challenged Preston.

The only one who had suddenly... disappeared.

Meanwhile...

Detective Hale drove straight to the Cook County Records Office.

An elderly clerk met him in the archives room.

"You need the Bennett file?"

"Everything."

Death certificate.

Autopsy.

Police report.

Coast Guard investigation.

Insurance claim.

The clerk returned twenty minutes later carrying two thick boxes.

Marcus spent the next hour reading every page.

Something immediately stood out.

There was no autopsy.

No body.

No DNA confirmation.

Only a legal declaration of death based on circumstantial evidence.

Marcus frowned.

He flipped to the insurance records.

A life insurance policy.

Five million dollars.

Beneficiary...

Charles Bennett.

Preston and Evelyn's father.

Marcus checked the payment history.

The money had been deposited...

Exactly thirty days after Michael was declared dead.

He immediately circled the date.

Then another detail caught his attention.

Three days later...

Charles Bennett had transferred two million dollars to...

Preston Bennett.

Marcus leaned back in his chair.

"Interesting."

Across the city...

Preston sat alone inside his penthouse.

His tuxedo jacket lay on the floor.

A glass of expensive whiskey rested untouched beside him.

His phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

He answered cautiously.

"What?"

A calm male voice spoke.

"They found the envelope."

Preston's grip tightened.

"I know."

"They also found the flash drive."

Silence.

"You promised me Daniel wouldn't become a problem."

"I said I'd handle him."

"You failed."

Preston slammed the glass onto the table.

"It wasn't supposed to happen this way."

The voice remained calm.

"Nothing ever does."

"What now?"

Another pause.

Then...

"You finish what Michael started."

Preston froze.

His face lost every trace of color.

"...What did you say?"

"You heard me."

The line disconnected.

Preston stared at the phone.

His breathing became uneven.

He whispered only one name.

"Michael..."

Later that afternoon...

Marcus returned to police headquarters.

Ryan Foster was waiting.

"I talked to Evelyn."

Marcus nodded.

"What did you learn?"

Ryan handed him a notebook.

"Michael never had a funeral with a body."

Marcus smiled faintly.

"I know."

Ryan looked confused.

"You already found that?"

"I found something even stranger."

He showed Ryan the insurance records.

Ryan's eyes widened.

"Five million dollars?"

"And two million went straight to Preston."

Ryan frowned.

"You think Michael faked his death?"

Marcus shook his head.

"I don't know."

"But somebody made a fortune from it."

Before they could continue...

Rachel Kim hurried into the office carrying another evidence bag.

"You need to see this."

Marcus stood.

"What is it?"

"We finished restoring the deleted files from Daniel's flash drive."

She placed a printed photograph on the table.

Marcus looked down.

His pulse quickened.

The picture had been taken nearly four years earlier.

It showed Preston standing outside a downtown office building.

Standing beside him...

Was a man wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap.

Most of his face was hidden.

But one small detail couldn't be missed.

A distinctive scar stretched from his left ear to the corner of his jaw.

Ryan stared at the picture.

"Who is he?"

Marcus didn't answer.

He reached into Michael Bennett's old driver's license file.

Placed it beside the photograph.

The scar matched perfectly.

Same location.

Same shape.

Same angle.

Ryan looked from one picture to the other.

His voice barely rose above a whisper.

"My God..."

Marcus nodded slowly.

"The dead don't leave fingerprints."

"They don't collect insurance."

"And they certainly don't appear in surveillance photos."

He looked back at the image.

"There are only two possibilities."

Ryan swallowed hard.

"What are they?"

Marcus's eyes never left the photograph.

"Either Michael Bennett never died..."

"...or someone has spent the last three years pretending to be him."

At that exact moment...

Across the hall...

A young evidence technician burst through the door.

"Detective!"

Marcus turned.

"What now?"

The technician was breathing hard.

"We just received a priority message from Illinois State Police."

Marcus frowned.

"What kind of message?"

The technician handed him the report.

Marcus read the first line.

His expression changed instantly.

A black SUV had just been found abandoned twenty miles outside Chicago.

Inside the vehicle...

Police recovered fresh blood.

A burner phone.

And one passport.

Issued under a false name.

But the driver's photograph wasn't false.

May you like

It was unmistakably...

Michael Bennett.
