Chapter 6: The List of Names

Chapter 6: The List of Names
My hands began to shake.
I stared at the photograph as if it might somehow change.
It didn't.
There I was.

Walking out of my office.
Holding a cup of coffee.
Looking over my shoulder.
Completely unaware that someone was watching me.
Completely unaware that my own brother had ordered it.
I slowly turned the picture over again.
She knows too much. Watch her.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Preston's.
I had seen those sharp, slanted letters my entire life.
Birthday cards.
Christmas gifts.
Business notes.
Every family gathering.
There was no mistake.
I looked up at Detective Marcus Hale.
"When was this taken?"
He glanced at the evidence log.
"Almost twenty-two months ago."
My stomach tightened.
"Why would he have someone following me?"
Marcus didn't answer immediately.
"That's the question we're trying to answer."
I looked down at the photograph again.
"I didn't know anything."
"Not then."
Marcus folded his arms.
"Maybe you knew something without realizing it."
Before I could respond, Sophie's monitor beeped softly behind me.
I turned.
She was still asleep.
Peaceful.
Safe.
For now.
Marcus lowered his voice.
"I don't think tonight was the beginning."
"I think it was the moment everything finally unraveled."
I slowly nodded.
Because deep inside...
I knew he was right.
One hour later...
Police headquarters.
Chicago.
The evidence room buzzed with activity.
Rachel Kim carefully cataloged every item from Daniel Ruiz's envelope.
Photographs.
USB drive.
Printed emails.
Financial records.
One thick, handwritten notebook.
Marcus picked it up.
The cover was worn.
Inside...
Every page contained dates.
Times.
Names.
And detailed observations.
Daniel hadn't simply collected evidence.
He had built an entire timeline.
The first entry was dated nearly four years earlier.
February 18
Mr. Bennett arrived through the employee garage.
Met unknown female in Conference Room B.
She left crying.
Marcus turned another page.
Another woman.
Another meeting.
Another argument.
Another payment.
Page after page.
Month after month.
The same pattern repeated.
Rachel looked over his shoulder.
"How many women are listed?"
Marcus counted silently.
"...Twenty-three."
Rachel looked stunned.
"Twenty-three?"
He nodded.
"And that's only in this notebook."
He continued reading.
Most entries ended the same way.
Paid.
Transferred.
Signed NDA.
Never returned.
Rachel frowned.
"Nondisclosure agreements?"
Marcus nodded.
"Looks like it."
He turned another page.
Then stopped.
One name had been circled several times.
Emily Carson.
Unlike the others...
There was a large question mark beside her name.
Marcus opened another folder from the envelope.
Inside was Emily's missing-person report.
Age twenty-seven.
Marketing consultant.
Last seen eight months earlier.
Family still searching.
No suspects.
No arrests.
Rachel looked uneasy.
"Daniel thought Preston was connected."
Marcus nodded slowly.
"But he couldn't prove it."
Another envelope slipped from the notebook.
Smaller.
Sealed.
Written across the front...
Open only if something happens to me.
Marcus carefully opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Daniel's handwriting was neat.
Steady.
The first sentence made the room fall silent.
If you're reading this, Preston Bennett finally realized I was watching him.
Marcus continued.
I never intended to become part of this.
I only wanted to do my job.
But after reviewing hundreds of hours of surveillance over the years, I noticed patterns no one else did.
Women came to see him.
Most left crying.
Some accepted money.
Some disappeared completely.
Rachel slowly lowered herself into a chair.
Marcus kept reading.
I copied everything because I knew one day someone would need the truth.
If I'm dead... don't let him win.
The room remained silent.
Finally Rachel spoke.
"This isn't just about assault anymore."
Marcus looked at the growing mountain of evidence.
"No."
"It's becoming something much bigger."
Back at the hospital...
Morning sunlight crept through the blinds.
I hadn't slept.
Every time I closed my eyes...
I saw Preston smiling as he pulled the phone from Sophie's pocket.
Then I heard the crack of the oak board.
Then the blood.
A gentle knock came at the door.
A nurse smiled.
"Your daughter can have breakfast."
A few minutes later, Sophie sat up carefully.
She looked much better.
Color had returned to her cheeks.
"Can I have pancakes?"
I laughed for the first time in what felt like forever.
"If the doctor says yes."
She grinned.
"I knew you'd say that."
While she ate...
My phone buzzed again.
Unknown number.
I hesitated.
Then answered.
"Hello?"
No one spoke.
Only breathing.
Slow.
Steady.
Then...
A man's voice.
"You should've left the wedding."
Every muscle in my body tensed.
"Who is this?"
"You still have time."
"Walk away."
The line went quiet.
Then he added...
"For your daughter's sake."
The call disconnected.
I immediately blocked the number.
But my hands wouldn't stop shaking.
Someone knew where I was.
Someone wanted me scared.
Someone wanted me silent.
They had picked the wrong mother.
At that exact moment...
Across town...
Olivia Grant sat alone inside her law office.
Preston's case file lay open on her desk.
She wasn't reading the assault report.
She was staring at something else.
A confidential client intake form.
She flipped to the final page.
One handwritten note caught her attention.
Destroy all surveillance before police arrive.
Olivia frowned.
She hadn't noticed it before.
Because it wasn't there yesterday.
Someone had slipped it into the file overnight.
She examined the handwriting carefully.
It matched Preston's signature.
Her expression slowly changed.
Then she reached into her desk drawer.
Pulled out her phone.
Scrolled to one contact.
Detective Marcus Hale.
Her thumb hovered over the call button.
For nearly a full minute.
Finally...
She pressed it.
Marcus answered immediately.
"This is Hale."
Olivia took a deep breath.
"My name is Olivia Grant."
"I'm Preston Bennett's attorney."
Marcus remained silent.
She continued.
"I think..."
She swallowed hard.
"...I may have been defending the wrong man."
Before Marcus could respond...
Another call came through on his second phone.
It was from the crime lab.
He answered.
"This is Hale."
The technician sounded breathless.
"Detective..."
"We identified the fingerprints from Daniel Ruiz's office."
Marcus grabbed a pen.
"Who do they belong to?"
There was a long pause.
Then the answer came.
"They belong to someone who officially died... three years ago."
Marcus froze.
"What?"
The technician repeated the name.
And for the first time in his career...
Detective Marcus Hale was completely speechless.
Because the fingerprint belonged to...
Michael Bennett.
May you like
Preston's older brother.
The brother the entire Bennett family had buried three years earlier.
