Chapter 10: The Judge in the Family Photo

Chapter 10: The Judge in the Family Photo
Detective Marcus Hale stared at the old photograph for a long time.
No one in the room spoke.
Ryan Foster finally broke the silence.
"Are you sure that's Judge Whitaker?"
Marcus didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he opened a secure government database.
He searched for an image taken nearly thirty years earlier.
A black-and-white newspaper clipping appeared.
The headline read:
LOCAL BUSINESSMAN DONATES LAND FOR NEW COMMUNITY CENTER
Standing beside the businessman...
Was a much younger Harold Whitaker.
Same smile.
Same jawline.
Same distinctive birthmark beneath his left eye.
Marcus placed the newspaper beside Michael's family photograph.
It was the same man.
"No doubt," Marcus said quietly.
"It's him."
Ryan frowned.
"But why would a federal judge be in the Bennett family album?"
Marcus leaned back in his chair.
"That's exactly what we're going to find out."
Across town...
I sat beside Sophie's hospital bed.
She was finally asleep again.
The room was peaceful.
For the first time in nearly twenty-four hours...
There were no doctors.
No detectives.
No shouting.
Only the soft rhythm of the heart monitor.
My phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
Again.
I hesitated.
Then answered.
"Hello?"
No response.
Only quiet breathing.
Then...
A woman's voice.
Barely above a whisper.
"Evelyn..."
I froze.
"Who is this?"
"You don't know me."
"But Michael saved my life."
Every muscle in my body tightened.
"What?"
"He told me..."
"...if anything ever happened to him..."
"...I should find you."
I stood.
"Where are you?"
"I can't say over the phone."
"Someone is watching."
My pulse quickened.
"What do you mean?"
"They've been following me since yesterday."
"Who?"
"I don't know."
"But they drive a black SUV."
The same type of vehicle police had recovered that morning.
The woman continued.
"I have proof."
"Proof of what?"
"What Preston has been hiding."
I swallowed hard.
"Can we meet?"
There was a long silence.
Finally...
"Tomorrow."
"I'll text you the location."
The call disconnected.
I stared at my phone.
One more stranger.
One more secret.
One more piece of a puzzle that refused to stop growing.
Meanwhile...
Detective Hale requested an emergency meeting with the State Attorney's Office.
Assistant State Attorney Linda Chavez entered the conference room carrying several files.
"You said this couldn't wait."
Marcus handed her the family photograph.
She looked confused.
"What am I looking at?"
"The man standing beside Charles Bennett."
She adjusted her glasses.
"Judge Harold Whitaker."
Marcus nodded.
"He has been randomly assigned to Preston Bennett's criminal case."
Linda frowned.
"And?"
"They've known each other for decades."
She looked up sharply.
"You're certain?"
Marcus placed the newspaper clipping on the table.
Then Michael's notebook.
Then the insurance records.
Finally, Daniel Ruiz's photographs.
The table filled with evidence.
Linda slowly exhaled.
"If this relationship wasn't disclosed..."
"It could be grounds for judicial recusal."
Marcus nodded.
"Exactly."
Ryan added,
"If the public finds out after the trial starts..."
"The entire case could collapse."
Linda closed the folder.
"We'll verify everything before taking action."
Marcus leaned forward.
"We don't have much time."
Across the city...
Preston sat inside his penthouse.
His whiskey remained untouched.
The television was muted.
Every news station carried the same headline.
Bridegroom Under Investigation After Child Injured at Wedding Reception.
His phone rang.
This time...
The caller ID displayed a name.
Dad.
Preston answered immediately.
"They found more evidence."
Charles Bennett's voice remained calm.
"I know."
"What do we do?"
"Nothing."
Preston stood.
"They have Daniel's files."
"They're looking for Michael."
"They're asking questions about Whitaker."
Charles remained strangely composed.
"I told you years ago..."
"Loose ends become expensive."
Preston clenched his jaw.
"This isn't my fault."
"No?"
Charles replied.
"Who hit the child?"
Silence.
"Who planted the phone?"
More silence.
"Who ignored my instructions?"
Preston slammed his fist against the kitchen counter.
"I had everything under control."
"No."
Charles answered coldly.
"You had everything under your ego."
The line went silent for several seconds.
Then Charles spoke again.
"Meet me tonight."
"Where?"
"The lake house."
Preston frowned.
"We sold that place."
"No."
Charles replied.
"We told everyone we sold it."
The call ended.
That evening...
Marcus finally received the forensic report from the abandoned SUV.
Rachel Kim walked into his office carrying a tablet.
"We recovered something."
"What?"
"A partial fingerprint."
Marcus looked up.
"From the SUV?"
She nodded.
"It wasn't Michael's."
"It wasn't Preston's."
Ryan walked over.
"Then whose?"
Rachel turned the tablet around.
A photograph appeared beside the fingerprint match.
Marcus's eyes widened.
"No..."
Ryan leaned closer.
His expression instantly changed.
The print belonged to...
Charles Bennett.
Marcus slowly looked at Ryan.
"So the father lied."
Ryan nodded.
"He was in the SUV."
Marcus picked up his phone.
"I want surveillance around Charles Bennett immediately."
Before he could make the call...
His phone rang first.
Unknown number.
Marcus answered cautiously.
"Hale."
A frightened male voice whispered,
"Don't hang up."
Marcus recognized it instantly.
Michael Bennett.
Alive.
Barely breathing.
Marcus stood so quickly his chair fell backward.
"Michael?"
"I don't have much time."
"Where are you?"
"They found me."
Marcus grabbed a pen.
"Who?"
"My father."
Marcus felt a chill run through his entire body.
"Listen to me."
"You need to tell me where you are."
Michael coughed violently.
Marcus could hear wind in the background.
Water.
Waves crashing nearby.
"The old lighthouse..."
Marcus wrote as fast as he could.
"Which lighthouse?"
Another cough.
"North Harbor..."
Then...
A loud noise echoed through the phone.
A car door slammed.
Someone shouted.
Michael's breathing became frantic.
"They're here."
"Michael!"
"Tell Evelyn..."
His voice cracked.
"...I'm sorry I couldn't protect her sooner."
A gunshot exploded through the phone.
Then another.
The line filled with static.
Finally...
Silence.
Marcus stared at the dead phone.
Ryan looked at him.
"What happened?"
Marcus slowly lowered the receiver.
His face had gone pale.
"He wasn't alone."
Ryan's heartbeat quickened.
"Who found him?"
Marcus looked toward the window.
Where dark storm clouds rolled across the Chicago skyline.
Then he answered with chilling certainty.
May you like
"Whoever just tried to kill him..."
"...got there before we did."
