Chapter 8: The Woman Before Me

Chapter 8: The Woman Before Me
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Claire’s words stayed in the air like a warning.
“You are not the first woman Daniel has controlled.”
I wanted to reject it.
I wanted to tell myself she was lying.
That she was just another person trying to manipulate the situation.
But something in her expression stopped me.

She didn’t look like someone trying to win.
She looked like someone who had been carrying a secret for a very long time.
“Tell me everything,” I said.
My voice surprised even me.
Claire looked at Rachel.
Then at my sister.
Finally, her eyes returned to mine.
“Before I do, you need to understand something.”
“What?”
“Daniel is very good at making people believe they are the problem.”
My chest tightened.
Because I knew exactly what she meant.
For years, every argument somehow became my fault.
If he got angry, I had pushed too far.
If he lied, I had asked too many questions.
If he controlled something, he said he was just trying to protect our family.
Claire continued.
“I met Daniel seven years ago.”
The same year I had met him.
I felt my fingers tighten around my coffee cup.
“He told me he was separated.”
My eyes lifted.
“Separated?”
She nodded.
“He said his marriage was already over. He said he was only waiting for the right time to leave.”
A painful realization hit me.
The timeline.
The excuses.
The late nights.
The stories he told me about his past.
I had always believed Daniel when he said he was honest with me.
But maybe honesty was never something he gave.
Maybe it was something he performed.
“He used the same words with you, didn’t he?” Claire asked quietly.
I didn’t answer.
I didn’t need to.
She already knew.
“He told me I was different. That he had never felt understood before.”
My stomach turned.
Those were the same words Daniel used when we first met.
Claire looked down.
“At first, I believed him.”
She took a breath.
“Then I started noticing things.”
“What things?”
“The lies.”
The word came out softly.
“But not the obvious ones. The small ones.”
She explained how Daniel always changed details of his stories.
How he would disappear for hours and claim he was working.
How he became angry whenever she asked simple questions.
How he slowly isolated her from people who might challenge him.
“He made me feel like I was lucky he stayed.”
I looked away.
Because that sentence hurt.
Not because it was about Claire.
Because it sounded familiar.
Claire continued.
“When I finally realized what was happening, I tried to leave.”
“And?”
Her expression changed.
“That’s when I learned what Daniel was really capable of.”
The entire table became silent.
“He threatened me.”
My sister frowned.
“With what?”
Claire looked at me.
“With my reputation.”
She explained that Daniel had collected private conversations, personal information, and documents that he could use against her.
“He told me nobody would believe me.”
My heart sank.
Because that was exactly what Daniel tried to make me believe.
That no one would trust me.
That everyone would think I was dramatic.
That I would lose everything if I spoke.
“So why did he pay you?” Rachel asked.
Claire reached into her bag.
She pulled out an envelope.
“I kept copies.”
She placed it on the table.
Inside were printed messages.
Bank transfers.
Emails.
Evidence.
My hands shook as I looked through them.
Daniel had not been paying Claire because he cared about her.
He had been paying her because he was afraid of her.
Because she knew the truth.
Rachel carefully reviewed the documents.
“This is significant.”
Claire nodded.
“There’s more.”
I looked up.
“What more?”
She hesitated.
Then she whispered:
“Daniel didn’t just take your inheritance.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What did he do?”
Claire looked at me with sympathy.
“He has been building a pattern for years.”
She opened another file.
Inside were names.
Dates.
Financial records.
Different women.
Different situations.
But the same behavior.
Control.
Manipulation.
Money.
Silence.
My hands covered my mouth.
I had spent years wondering why I felt like I was always walking on broken glass around Daniel.
Now I knew.
Because I was.
He had created a life where everyone around him was afraid to challenge him.
And I had almost become another person trapped inside his plan.
Claire reached across the table.
“I’m sorry.”
I looked at her.
“For what?”
“For not warning you sooner.”
I shook my head slowly.
“You tried.”
She looked confused.
“What?”
I pointed at the messages.
“The money.”
Her eyes lowered.
“I couldn’t leave without proof.”
And then I understood.
Claire wasn’t Daniel’s secret.
She was Daniel’s mistake.
The person he thought he had controlled.
The person he thought he had silenced.
But now she was sitting beside me.
Helping me expose him.
When we left the coffee shop, Rachel looked at me.
“You realize what this means, right?”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
Daniel wasn’t dealing with a broken wife anymore.
He was dealing with every person he had underestimated.
That night, I opened the folder I created two months earlier.
The one Daniel never found.
The one he thought was just a backup of documents.
But now it had become something else.
A record.
A timeline.
A story.
And for the first time, I wasn’t collecting evidence because I was afraid.
I was collecting evidence because I was ready.
Because Daniel thought he was about to end my life.
May you like
He didn’t realize…
I was about to expose his.
