Chapter 7: The Stranger Who Knew His Secret

Chapter 7: The Stranger Who Knew His Secret
I stared at the unknown message for almost ten minutes.
One sentence.
That was all it contained.
“You don’t know the truth about Daniel.”
No name.
No explanation.
No warning.
Just enough information to make me wonder.

Rachel noticed my expression.
“What happened?”
I handed her my phone.
She read the message carefully.
“Did you give your number to anyone recently?”
I shook my head.
“No.”
She looked at my sister.
“Could this be connected to Daniel?”
My sister immediately frowned.
“Everything seems to be connected to Daniel.”
She was right.
Over the past few weeks, I had learned one painful lesson.
The person I thought I knew was only the version of Daniel he wanted everyone to see.
The loving husband.
The responsible father.
The man who always talked about protecting his family.
Behind closed doors, he was someone else.
Someone who lied.
Someone who controlled.
Someone who believed he could decide what happened to everyone around him.
But this message was different.
It didn’t come from him.
It came from someone who knew him.
Someone who knew something even I didn’t.
Rachel placed my phone on the table.
“Don’t respond yet.”
“Why?”
“Because whoever sent this wants a reaction.”
I looked at the screen again.
“What if they’re trying to help?”
Rachel leaned back.
“Then they’ll understand why we need proof before trusting them.”
She had a point.
Trust had become something I no longer gave freely.
Not after Daniel.
Not after Linda.
Not after discovering how many people could smile at me while hiding the truth.
That night, I barely slept.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the kitchen.
The fall.
Daniel standing over me.
Linda drinking her wine.
My daughter crying.
But then I remembered something else.
Emma running for the phone.
Emma choosing to help me even when she was scared.
That memory gave me strength.
The next morning, the unknown number sent another message.
This time, it included a photo.
My heart stopped.
It was Daniel.
Standing outside a building I recognized.
An apartment complex.
The same apartment Rachel had found in the documents.
But there was someone else in the picture.
Claire Morgan.
They weren’t arguing.
They weren’t meeting by accident.
They were standing close together.
Too close.
My hands trembled.
Not because I was surprised.
Deep down, I already knew.
But seeing it made everything real.
Rachel looked at the photo.
“Whoever sent this has been watching them.”
“Or knows them.”
She nodded.
“Exactly.”
A few minutes later, another message arrived.
“You deserve to know what happened before you married him.”
I froze.
Before I married him?
What did that mean?
I typed a response.
Who are you?
The reply came almost immediately.
“Someone who made the same mistake you did.”
My stomach tightened.
Rachel read the message.
“Interesting.”
“What do you think?”
She looked at me.
“I think this person may know something about Daniel’s past.”
That afternoon, we agreed to meet in a public place.
A small coffee shop near my mother’s house.
I didn’t go alone.
Rachel came with me.
So did my sister.
When we arrived, I saw a woman sitting near the window.
She looked nervous.
She kept checking the door.
When she saw me, she stood.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then she quietly said:
“You’re Emily, right?”
I nodded.
“Who are you?”
She swallowed.
“My name is Claire.”
Everything inside me went still.
Claire Morgan.
The woman whose name appeared in Daniel’s secret accounts.
The woman he had been paying.
The woman I thought was my husband’s betrayal.
But before I could speak, Claire raised her hands.
“Please listen before you judge me.”
My sister immediately stepped forward.
“You expect us to believe you?”
Claire looked down.
“I know how it looks.”
“Because you were taking money from my husband?”
Her face changed.
“No.”
She shook her head.
“That’s what Daniel wanted you to believe.”
The room went silent.
I stared at her.
“What are you talking about?”
Claire looked directly at me.
“Daniel wasn’t helping me.”
A pause.
“He was paying me to stay quiet.”
My heart raced.
“Quiet about what?”
Claire took a deep breath.
Then she said the words that changed everything.
“About the woman he hurt before you.”
I felt the air leave my lungs.
Rachel leaned forward.
“Explain.”
Claire looked at me with sadness in her eyes.
“Emily, you are not the first woman Daniel has controlled.”
The coffee shop suddenly felt too quiet.
Too small.
Too still.
Because in that moment, I realized something terrifying.
My story with Daniel had not started when he pushed me across the kitchen.
It started years before I ever met him.
And someone else had already tried to warn the world about who he really was.
May you like
But no one listened.
To be continued…
