Chapter 13: The Missing Document

Chapter 13: The Missing Document

I stared at Daniel’s message until the screen went dark.

“You should stop searching for things that are better left hidden.”

A year ago, those words would have terrified me.

Six months ago, I would have questioned myself.

A week ago, I might have cried.

But now?

Now I understood exactly what Daniel was doing.

He wasn’t warning me.

He was confirming everything.

People who have nothing to hide don’t threaten the truth.

They explain.

They prove.

They answer questions.

Daniel didn’t do any of those things.

He tried to make the truth disappear.

I immediately called Rachel.

She answered on the second ring.

“What happened?”

I didn’t waste time.

“Daniel knows.”

A pause.

“Knows what?”

“That we’re looking into his past.”

Her voice became serious.

“Did he contact you?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

I read the message.

Silence followed.

Then Rachel said:

“Do not delete that.”

“I won’t.”

“Take screenshots. Save everything. We’re building a timeline.”

I looked at the message again.

A timeline.

That was what my life had become.

A collection of moments where Daniel revealed who he really was.

The lies.

The threats.

The manipulation.

And now…

the panic.

The next morning, Mark arrived with new information.

“I checked the security records from your house.”

My heart immediately tightened.

“Why?”

“Because of the missing document.”

I looked at him.

“You found something?”

He placed his laptop on the table.

“Yes.”

The screen showed footage from our home.

The date was two days earlier.

The time was after Daniel had left his message.

I watched carefully.

At first, nothing happened.

Then someone appeared.

My breath stopped.

Linda.

Daniel’s mother.

She had entered the house.

Without permission.

Without telling anyone.

My sister stood up.

“She broke in?”

Mark shook his head.

“Technically, she still had a key.”

I felt anger rising.

The same woman who blamed me.

The same woman who protected Daniel.

She had come into my home.

She had searched through my belongings.

She had taken something.

“Can we prove what she took?”

Mark nodded.

“We can.”

He zoomed in on the footage.

Linda walked directly toward the office.

She didn’t search randomly.

She knew exactly where to go.

“She knew about the folder,” Rachel said.

I felt sick.

Of course she did.

Daniel and Linda had been working together.

The folder wasn’t just hidden from Daniel.

It was hidden from both of them.

Mark continued.

“She removed one envelope.”

My heart sank.

“What was inside?”

I already knew.

The most important document.

The one connecting everything.

A complete record of the money transfers.

A document Daniel never wanted anyone to see.

I looked at Rachel.

“What do we do now?”

She didn’t hesitate.

“We use it.”

I frowned.

“But they took it.”

“Yes.”

“Then how?”

Rachel smiled slightly.

“Because they made a mistake.”

“What mistake?”

“They proved they knew it existed.”

I stared at her.

She explained.

“By taking the document, Linda confirmed that it was valuable. She confirmed that Daniel knew about it. And if we can show they removed evidence…”

She didn’t finish.

She didn’t need to.

I understood.

They thought stealing the evidence would protect them.

Instead, they created more evidence.

For the first time in weeks, I felt something close to hope.

Not because the fight was over.

It wasn’t.

But because Daniel and Linda were finally making mistakes.

That afternoon, I received a call from an unexpected person.

The police investigator assigned to my case.

“Emily, I need you to come in.”

My stomach tightened.

“Why?”

“We found something related to the night of the accident.”

My hand froze around the phone.

“What?”

“There was a security camera from a nearby property.”

I sat up.

“Wait… there was video?”

“Yes.”

My heart started racing.

The kitchen had no camera.

Daniel knew that.

He thought there was no proof.

But maybe he was wrong.

“What does the footage show?”

The investigator paused.

“Emily, I think you should see it yourself.”

An hour later, I sat in a small interview room watching the footage.

The screen was grainy.

The angle wasn’t perfect.

But it was enough.

I saw myself walking into the kitchen.

I saw Daniel following me.

I saw the argument begin.

Then I saw the moment.

The moment everything changed.

Daniel stepped forward.

I stepped back.

And then…

he pushed.

The room went silent.

Even though I had lived through it, watching it was different.

There was no denying it.

No excuse.

No explanation.

Just the truth.

The investigator turned to me.

“We wanted you to see this before we proceeded.”

I wiped away a tear.

Not because I was hurt.

Because for so long, Daniel had made me question my own memory.

Now I had proof.

Real proof.

When I returned home, I found another message waiting.

Not from Daniel.

From Linda.

“You don’t know what you’re doing. If you continue, you will destroy this family.”

I read it carefully.

Then I smiled.

Because that sentence told me everything.

She wasn’t saying I was wrong.

She wasn’t saying Daniel was innocent.

She was saying I was threatening their secret.

I placed the phone down.

The old me would have asked:

“How do I save this family?”

But the new me asked something different.

“Why should I save a family that tried to destroy me?”

That night, Rachel called with the final update.

“We have enough to move forward.”

I looked at my daughter sleeping peacefully.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“Emily… Daniel’s entire story is about to collapse.”

I closed my eyes.

For months, he had controlled the narrative.

He had decided what people believed.

He had convinced everyone that I was the problem.

But now the truth was coming.

And this time…

he wouldn’t be able to rewrite it.

May you like

Because the woman he tried to silence…

had finally found her voice.
