Chapter 6: The Escape Plan He Thought I Would Never Find

Chapter 6: The Escape Plan He Thought I Would Never Find

For the first time in weeks, I slept peacefully.

Not because the pain was gone.

My leg still throbbed every night. Simple movements reminded me of what happened in that kitchen.

But the fear was gone.

And I finally understood why.

Fear comes from uncertainty.

For months, I had been trapped in a world where I questioned everything.

Was Daniel really changing?

Was I overreacting?

Was I imagining things?

But now I had answers.

The man I married had been hiding money.

Lying about his actions.

And secretly preparing a life without me.

The worst part wasn’t that he wanted to leave.

People fall out of love.

People make selfish choices.

That was painful, but it was human.

The part I couldn’t accept was that Daniel planned to destroy my security before walking away.

He wasn’t leaving empty-handed.

He was trying to take everything he could.

Including my inheritance.

Including my daughter’s stability.

Including the future I had worked so hard to build.

That morning, Rachel arrived with a thick folder.

She placed it on the table.

“I found more.”

I looked at her.

“More than what we already know?”

She nodded.

“This is bigger than financial theft.”

My stomach tightened.

“What did you find?”

Rachel opened the folder.

Inside were copies of emails, travel plans, and property documents.

Daniel had been making arrangements for months.

A new apartment.

A new bank account.

A new life.

But there was one detail that made my blood run cold.

A date.

The date he planned to leave.

It was only three weeks away.

“He was going to disappear,” my sister whispered.

Rachel shook her head.

“Not exactly.”

She pointed to another document.

“He was planning to file for divorce after moving the money.”

I stared at the papers.

Everything suddenly made sense.

The distance.

The late nights.

The sudden password changes.

The way he became irritated whenever I asked simple questions.

Daniel wasn’t confused.

He wasn’t struggling.

He was preparing.

And while I was trying to save our marriage…

he was planning his exit.

My phone rang.

I looked down.

Daniel.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Rachel nodded.

“Answer it.”

I picked up.

“Hello?”

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Are you feeling better?”

The question almost made me laugh.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

After everything, he still wanted to pretend.

“I’m healing.”

A pause.

Then he said:

“I think we need to talk.”

I looked at the evidence spread across the table.

The old me would have been nervous.

The old me would have tried to fix things.

But that version of me didn’t exist anymore.

“About what?”

“About us.”

I stayed silent.

Daniel continued.

“I know things got out of control.”

Out of control.

That was how he described breaking my leg.

“I never meant for you to get hurt.”

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“You mean you didn’t mean for anyone to find out.”

Silence.

A long silence.

Then his voice changed.

“You need to be careful with the things you’re looking into.”

There it was.

The threat.

Not an apology.

Not regret.

A warning.

I looked at Rachel.

She immediately started recording notes.

“Are you threatening me, Daniel?”

“No.”

But his answer came too quickly.

“I’m telling you that you don’t understand everything.”

I almost smiled.

“You’re right.”

Another pause.

“I don’t understand how someone can hurt the person they promised to protect.”

His breathing changed.

For the first time, I heard uncertainty in his voice.

“I’m still your husband.”

“No.”

The word came out stronger than I expected.

“You’re the man who hurt me.”

Silence.

Then Daniel whispered:

“You’re making a mistake.”

I looked at my daughter sitting on the floor, drawing pictures.

The same little girl who had run for help when I couldn’t.

The same little girl who had been forced to see something no child should ever witness.

“No, Daniel.”

My voice was steady.

“You made the mistake.”

I ended the call.

For a few seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Rachel smiled slightly.

“That was good.”

I looked at her.

“It wasn’t about being good.”

I closed the folder.

“It was about letting him know something.”

“What?”

I looked toward the window.

“That the woman he thought he could control is gone.”

Later that evening, another message arrived.

This time from an unknown number.

No name.

No explanation.

Just one sentence.

“You don’t know the truth about Daniel.”

I stared at the screen.

My first thought was fear.

My second thought was curiosity.

Because after everything I had discovered…

I knew one thing.

There were still secrets left.

May you like

And whoever sent that message…

knew something Daniel was desperate to hide.
