Chapter 15: The Secret Behind the Money

Chapter 15: The Secret Behind the Money
For the first time in months, I thought I could finally breathe.
Daniel’s lies had been exposed.
The evidence was out.
The people who once believed his version of the story were finally seeing the truth.
I thought that would be the end.
I was wrong.

Because people like Daniel didn’t build their lives on one lie.
They built them on layers.
And every time one layer was removed…
another one appeared underneath.
I stared at the message on my phone.
“Daniel has another secret. This one is bigger than the money.”
My first reaction was frustration.
Not fear.
Not shock.
Just exhaustion.
How much more could there possibly be?
I had already discovered hidden accounts.
Manipulation.
Betrayal.
A planned separation.
A history of controlling people.
What could possibly be worse?
Rachel arrived that evening and immediately noticed my expression.
“What happened?”
I handed her my phone.
She read the message carefully.
“Did you respond?”
“No.”
“Good.”
She sat down.
“Do we know who sent it?”
“Not yet.”
Rachel studied the image attached.
It was a document.
Old.
Yellowed.
The corner had Daniel’s name written on it.
“What is that?”
“I don’t know.”
She zoomed in.
Then her expression changed.
“Emily…”
“What?”
“This isn’t about your inheritance.”
My stomach tightened.
“What do you mean?”
Rachel looked at the document again.
“This is from before you met him.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
Before me.
That phrase had become a warning.
Every time someone mentioned Daniel’s past, another piece of his real identity appeared.
The next morning, Mark helped us investigate the document.
Within hours, he found the source.
An old company file.
A business Daniel was involved with nearly ten years earlier.
“The company was dissolved,” Mark explained.
“Why?”
“Officially? Financial problems.”
“And unofficially?”
He looked at me.
“Someone lost a lot of money.”
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Another story.
Another person.
Another situation where Daniel somehow walked away clean.
Mark continued.
“There was an investor named Robert Hayes.”
The name meant nothing to me.
“Who is he?”
“Someone who trusted Daniel.”
That sentence alone told me enough.
Mark opened another file.
“Robert invested a large amount of money into Daniel’s business idea.”
“And what happened?”
“The business failed.”
I frowned.
“Businesses fail.”
“Yes.”
Mark paused.
“But money didn’t disappear because of the failure.”
I looked at him.
“What happened?”
He placed a document in front of me.
“Funds were moved before the company collapsed.”
My hands became cold.
“Moved where?”
Mark looked at Rachel.
Then back at me.
“Multiple accounts.”
The same pattern.
The same behavior.
Take money.
Hide it.
Create confusion.
Control the story.
I felt sick.
Not because I was surprised.
Because I finally understood.
Daniel didn’t suddenly become this person after we married.
He had always been this person.
I just never had the evidence.
That afternoon, we contacted Robert.
At first, he didn’t want to talk.
He had spent years trying to forget what happened.
But when he heard my name…
everything changed.
“Emily?”
“Yes.”
There was a long silence.
Then he said:
“I’m sorry.”
I didn’t understand.
“Why are you apologizing?”
“Because I should have warned someone.”
My heart sank.
“What do you mean?”
Robert took a deep breath.
“After what Daniel did to me, I tried to expose him.”
“What happened?”
“Nobody believed me.”
I looked down.
Because I knew exactly how that felt.
“He made everyone think I was angry because I lost money.”
Robert’s voice became heavier.
“He told people I was unstable. That I was blaming him because I couldn’t accept failure.”
The same strategy.
Destroy the person who tells the truth.
“But you had proof?”
“Yes.”
“Where is it?”
Another pause.
“Daniel took it.”
I froze.
“What?”
“He broke into my office before I could release it.”
Rachel immediately looked up.
“Did you report it?”
“I tried.”
“And?”
Robert laughed bitterly.
“He was already ahead of me.”
That sentence stayed with me.
Daniel was always ahead.
Always planning.
Always preparing.
But this time was different.
Because he wasn’t facing one person.
He was facing everyone he had underestimated.
Before we ended the call, Robert said something that caught my attention.
“There’s one thing you need to know.”
“What?”
“Daniel wasn’t just hiding money.”
I waited.
“He was building a reputation.”
I frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“He spent years making sure everyone saw him as successful, trustworthy, and respected.”
Robert paused.
“But behind that image…”
His voice lowered.
“He was collecting opportunities.”
Opportunities.
That word bothered me.
“What kind of opportunities?”
Robert answered:
“People’s trust.”
That night, I sat alone thinking about everything.
Daniel didn’t just steal money.
He stole confidence.
He stole peace.
He made people question themselves.
And maybe that was his greatest weapon.
Not the money.
Not the lies.
The ability to make good people doubt their own reality.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Emily?”
“Yes?”
“I know you don’t know me.”
My heart tightened.
“Who are you?”
A pause.
Then:
“My name is Sarah Collins.”
I waited.
“I worked with Daniel after Robert.”
I sat up.
“What do you know?”
Her voice became quiet.
“I know what Daniel was really planning.”
A chill ran through me.
“What was he planning?”
The woman hesitated.
Then she said:
“He wasn’t just planning to leave you.”
Silence.
“He was planning to take Emma.”
My blood went cold.
“What?”
Sarah continued:
“He had been building a case against you for months.”
I could barely breathe.
“Why?”
Her answer shattered me.
“Because Daniel needed everyone to believe you were the unstable one.”
I looked toward Emma’s bedroom.
The little girl who had saved me.
The little girl who had trusted me.
And suddenly, the fight became bigger than I ever imagined.
Daniel wasn’t just trying to escape consequences.
He was trying to rewrite the story.
He wanted to become the victim.
And he wanted me to become the villain.
But he forgot something.
I had spent months collecting the truth.
May you like
And now…
the truth was coming for him.
