Chapter 18: The People Behind Daniel’s Plan

Chapter 18: The People Behind Daniel’s Plan
The message stayed on my screen.
“Daniel wasn’t working alone.”
For a moment, I thought I had already uncovered everything.
The money.
The lies.
The manipulation.
The custody plan.
The people who helped him hide the truth.

But Daniel had proven one thing over and over again.
There was always another layer.
Another secret.
Another person standing behind the curtain.
Rachel looked at my face.
“What does it say?”
I handed her the phone.
She read the message carefully.
Her expression changed.
“Did you recognize the number?”
I shook my head.
“No.”
Mark immediately started looking into it.
“Don’t reply yet.”
I nodded.
I had learned that lesson.
Daniel’s world was built around reactions.
Anger.
Fear.
Panic.
He wanted people to act before thinking.
But I was done playing his game.
A few minutes later, Mark looked up from his laptop.
“I have something.”
“What?”
“The number belongs to someone named Victor Hale.”
The name meant nothing to me.
“Who is he?”
Mark searched through his files.
Then he became quiet.
“That’s interesting.”
Rachel leaned forward.
“Why?”
“Because Victor Hale worked with Daniel.”
Another connection.
Another person.
“How?”
Mark opened a document.
“Victor was Daniel’s financial consultant years ago.”
My stomach tightened.
A financial consultant.
Someone who understood money.
Someone who could help hide it.
“What does he have to do with my inheritance?”
Mark looked at the records.
“I’m not sure yet.”
The uncertainty bothered me.
Because every time we followed one path, it led somewhere deeper.
That evening, Victor agreed to meet.
He chose a quiet office building downtown.
When he walked in, I immediately noticed something.
He looked nervous.
Not like someone hiding a secret.
Like someone who had been waiting years to tell the truth.
“Emily?”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
He sat down.
“I’m sorry.”
I heard that word too often lately.
Sorry.
From people who knew something.
People who could have helped earlier.
“Why are you sorry?”
Victor looked away.
“Because I helped him.”
The room went silent.
Rachel crossed her arms.
“Helped him do what?”
Victor took a deep breath.
“Build the system.”
I frowned.
“The system?”
He nodded.
“Daniel didn’t just steal money randomly. He created a structure.”
My heart sank.
“Explain.”
Victor opened a folder.
“Daniel knew people trusted him. He knew people wanted to believe he was successful. So he created an image.”
A successful businessman.
A responsible husband.
A reliable person.
“But behind that image, he was moving money between accounts. Using different names. Creating confusion.”
Rachel looked at the documents.
“Why are you coming forward now?”
Victor became quiet.
“Because I realized I wasn’t helping him manage money.”
He looked at me.
“I was helping him hide things.”
I understood that feeling.
The moment someone realizes they were part of something wrong.
“What changed?”
Victor looked down.
“When I heard about what happened to you.”
A pause.
“I knew he had gone too far.”
My hands tightened.
“How long have you known Daniel was like this?”
“Years.”
That answer hurt.
Because it meant many people saw pieces of the truth.
But no one stopped him.
“Why didn’t you say anything?”
Victor looked ashamed.
“Because I was afraid.”
The honesty surprised me.
“Afraid of what?”
“Daniel knew how to destroy people.”
He explained that Daniel kept records on everyone.
Private information.
Mistakes.
Weaknesses.
Anything he could use if someone challenged him.
“He collected leverage.”
That word made me uncomfortable.
Because it described Daniel perfectly.
He didn’t build relationships.
He built control.
Then Victor handed Rachel a small envelope.
“What is this?”
“The original account records.”
Rachel opened it.
Her eyes widened.
“Where did you get these?”
Victor looked at me.
“I kept copies.”
Inside were documents connecting Daniel’s old financial activities with the money taken from my inheritance.
A direct trail.
No excuses.
No confusion.
No way to rewrite the story.
For the first time, Daniel’s entire plan looked visible.
Like a machine that had finally been opened.
Every piece.
Every person.
Every decision.
All connected.
Before we left, Victor stopped me.
“There’s one more thing.”
I turned.
“What?”
He hesitated.
“Daniel didn’t choose you randomly.”
My heart froze.
“What do you mean?”
Victor looked at the documents.
“He knew about your inheritance before he married you.”
The room went silent.
I felt like the air disappeared.
“What?”
“He researched your family. Your financial situation. Your future assets.”
Rachel immediately looked alarmed.
“Are you saying the marriage was planned?”
Victor didn’t answer directly.
But his silence was enough.
On the drive home, I couldn’t stop thinking.
All those memories.
Our first meeting.
Our first date.
The way Daniel made me feel special.
The way he said he had never met anyone like me.
Were they real?
Or were they part of the plan?
When I arrived home, Emma ran toward me.
“Mommy!”
I hugged her tightly.
For a moment, everything else disappeared.
Not the court.
Not Daniel.
Not the betrayal.
Just my daughter.
The reason I kept going.
That night, Rachel called.
Her voice was urgent.
“Emily, we found something else.”
I closed my eyes.
“What now?”
“A document from before your wedding.”
My heart started racing.
“What kind of document?”
A pause.
Then she said:
“An agreement between Daniel and someone else.”
“Someone else?”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Rachel’s voice became quieter.
“Linda.”
I froze.
His mother.
The woman who defended him.
The woman who blamed me.
The woman who stood beside him from the beginning.
Rachel continued:
“Emily, I think we finally found where this all started.”
I looked at the old wedding photo on my shelf.
The picture of a day I once believed was the beginning of my happy life.
Now I wondered…
Was it the beginning of my marriage?
Or the beginning of Daniel’s plan?
May you like
Because if Linda was involved before I even became his wife…
then the betrayal was much bigger than I ever imagined.
