Chapter 19: The Agreement That Started Everything

Chapter 19: The Agreement That Started Everything
I stared at the wedding photo sitting on my shelf.
For years, that picture represented the happiest day of my life.
The day I believed I had married my best friend.
The day I believed I had found someone who would protect me.
Someone who would stand beside me through everything.
But now I looked at it differently.

I didn’t see a beginning anymore.
I saw questions.
How much of it was real?
How much of it was planned?
And the hardest question of all…
Did Daniel ever truly love me?
My phone rang again.
Rachel.
I answered immediately.
“Tell me.”
Her voice was quiet.
“We found the agreement.”
My heart started beating faster.
“Between Daniel and Linda?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Hidden in an old storage account connected to Daniel’s previous business files.”
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Another hidden place.
Another secret.
“Can you send it to me?”
“I already did.”
A few seconds later, the document appeared on my screen.
The title alone made my hands shake.
“Family Asset Protection Agreement.”
At first, it sounded harmless.
Almost normal.
But as I read further, my stomach turned.
It wasn’t about protecting family assets.
It was about controlling them.
The document discussed my inheritance.
My future finances.
My personal accounts.
Things Daniel and I had never even discussed before we married.
Then I saw something that made my entire body go cold.
A date.
The agreement was signed three months before our wedding.
Three months before I walked down the aisle.
Three months before I believed I was starting a new life.
My sister read over my shoulder.
“He knew.”
I swallowed.
“He knew everything.”
Rachel continued:
“There’s more.”
I scrolled down.
Near the bottom were two signatures.
Daniel.
And Linda.
My hands trembled.
The woman who sat in my kitchen.
The woman who watched me suffer.
The woman who told me I caused my own pain.
She had known from the beginning.
A memory suddenly came back.
The first time I met Linda.
She was kind.
Warm.
Almost too welcoming.
She asked about my family.
My father.
My inheritance.
My plans.
At the time, I thought she was interested because she wanted to know me.
Now I realized…
she was gathering information.
The next morning, we confronted Linda.
Not with anger.
Not with shouting.
With the truth.
She opened the door and immediately looked uncomfortable when she saw Rachel and Mark standing behind me.
“I don’t have anything to say.”
I looked at her.
“That’s interesting.”
She avoided my eyes.
“About what?”
I held up the document.
“This.”
Her face changed.
Only for a second.
But it was enough.
She knew.
“You went through Daniel’s things?”
“No.”
I stepped closer.
“We found what you tried to hide.”
For the first time, Linda looked afraid.
Not angry.
Afraid.
“You don’t understand.”
I almost smiled.
“That’s what Daniel always says.”
Her expression hardened.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.”
I looked at her.
“No.”
My voice was calm.
“I finally know exactly what I’m doing.”
Rachel placed the document on the table.
“You signed this agreement before Emily and Daniel were married.”
Linda stayed silent.
“Why?”
No answer.
“Why did you and your son discuss Emily’s inheritance before the wedding?”
Still nothing.
Then Linda finally spoke.
“You think I wanted this?”
The question surprised me.
I stared at her.
“What?”
Her eyes filled with frustration.
“Daniel always had a plan. He always believed he deserved more.”
I listened carefully.
Because for the first time, Linda wasn’t defending him.
She was explaining him.
“He was obsessed with being successful. With proving himself.”
“So you helped him.”
She looked away.
“I thought I was helping my son.”
The words were painful.
Because they revealed something important.
Linda knew.
She knew who Daniel was.
She knew what he was capable of.
And she chose him anyway.
“You watched him hurt people.”
Her eyes lowered.
“I thought I could control him.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
My voice became stronger.
“You protected him.”
Silence.
Because she knew I was right.
Before we left, Linda said something that stopped me.
“Emily.”
I turned.
“You need to know something.”
I waited.
“Daniel never planned for you to discover the truth.”
I looked at her.
“What does that mean?”
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“He had another plan if you started asking questions.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What plan?”
Linda looked terrified.
“I don’t know everything.”
A pause.
“But I know he had someone watching you.”
My heart dropped.
“Someone watching me?”
She nodded.
“And that person reported back to him.”
The room became silent.
Daniel didn’t just manipulate me from inside the marriage.
He had been monitoring me.
Studying me.
Preparing for my reaction.
That evening, Mark investigated the information.
Within hours, he found something.
A name.
A person connected to Daniel.
Someone who had been close to my family.
Someone I trusted.
When Rachel called, her voice was serious.
“Emily, we found the person.”
I held my breath.
“Who?”
A pause.
Then she answered:
“Someone you know.”
My stomach tightened.
“Who?”
Rachel whispered:
“Your best friend.”
I froze.
My best friend.
The person who had comforted me.
The person who listened to my marriage problems.
The person I trusted when I felt alone.
The person who knew everything.
I couldn’t speak.
Because suddenly, I understood.
Daniel didn’t just build a plan.
He built a network.
And the person closest to me…
May you like
might have been part of it all along.
To be continued…
