Chapter 9 - What Vivienne Knew.

The recording changed the investigation overnight.
Vivienne could no longer claim she entered the situation years later without knowledge of its origins.
She had known Elena was pregnant.
She had known Maya could alter the Costello succession.
She had heard Vincent and Raymond discuss hiding that fact from Luca.
Yet the recording still did not prove she administered the original compound.
It did not prove she caused Vincent's death.
It did not prove she ordered Hale's oxygen line disconnected.
Luca hated the gap between knowing and proving.
Daniel lived inside that gap professionally.
"We build it one fact at a time."
Luca paced three slow steps with his cane near the library desk.
"While Calder and Celeste disappear."
"We have border alerts."
"Alerts don't catch people who planned ahead."
"Neither does rage."
Luca stopped.
Daniel looked at his legs.
"You just walked while arguing with me."
Luca looked down.
He had.
Four days earlier, every step required total concentration.
Now anger had carried him three without thinking.
Maya, sitting nearby with colored pencils, looked delighted.
"Do it again."
"No."
"You weren't thinking."
"I am now."
"Then think less."
Daniel smiled.
"She's a better therapist than Park."
Dr. Park entered at exactly that moment.
"I heard that."
Daniel immediately looked busy.
The federal investigators requested Luca's formal statement that afternoon.
He described the original collapse, the years of treatment, Vivienne's role, and the syringe incident.
When asked about the slap in the foyer, Luca answered without minimizing it.
"I struck her once."
The investigator looked up.
"Why?"
"I was angry and betrayed."
"Do you regret it?"
Luca paused.
"I regret losing control."
The answer was not polished.
It was true.
He had no interest in pretending anger excused everything.
The investigator moved on.
Maya waited outside with Elena.
When Luca emerged, she looked at him carefully.
"Did you get in trouble?"
"No."
"Did you tell the truth?"
"Yes."
"Even the bad part?"
He knew what she meant.
"Especially that part."
Maya nodded.
"Good."
Elena watched him differently after that.
Not forgiving.
Not admiring.
Just measuring whether his actions matched the honesty she had demanded.
That mattered more to him than he wanted to admit.
The investigation into Vivienne's finances produced another surprise.
She had not become dramatically wealthier through the scheme.
Her accounts were comfortable but ordinary for someone in her position.
The larger money had flowed elsewhere.
Priya traced several transfers to a trust in the Cayman Islands.
The beneficiary was hidden behind corporate nominees.
A court order eventually uncovered the controlling name.
VINCENT COSTELLO FAMILY TRUST.
Luca stared at the words.
"Vincent had no children."
Daniel nodded.
"Officially."
Luca looked up.
"What does that mean?"
Priya shared a second document.
Seven months before his death, Vincent had amended the offshore trust to name an unknown beneficiary identified only by initials.
V.C.J.
Elena frowned.
"Another Vincent?"
Daniel shook his head.
"Maybe a child."
Luca felt a new knot form.
"Find birth records."
"Already searching."
The answer arrived the next morning.
Before Daniel revealed the name, he warned Luca that the search had touched sealed family-court records and that nothing should reach the press.
Luca's first response was sharper than necessary.
"No child gets dragged into this because reporters want a cleaner headline."
Daniel nodded.
It was the fastest agreement they had reached all week.
Elena noticed the change in Luca more clearly than he did.
A month earlier, he might have viewed an unknown heir first as a governance problem.
Now his first thought was privacy.
Maya had shifted the order of his instincts.
Power was still there.
Protection had moved ahead of it.
Daniel closed the office door before continuing.
The records showed that Claire had never requested support from Vincent or from any Costello entity.
There were no lawsuits, public claims, or attempts to sell the story.
Whatever arrangement existed between Claire and Vincent had been private by mutual choice or mutual fear.
That made the secrecy harder to dismiss as opportunism.
Then Daniel turned the screen toward Luca.
Vincent had fathered a son seventeen years earlier with a woman named Claire Jensen.
The child's name was Victor Christopher Jensen.
V.C.J.
Luca had a nephew he had never known existed.
Victor lived in Colorado with his mother and had no public connection to the Costello family.
He was seventeen.
Maya listened from the breakfast table.
"So I have a cousin?"
Luca rubbed his forehead.
"Apparently."
"Is everyone in this family secret?"
Elena nearly laughed.
Luca did not.
The existence of Victor changed motive again.
If Vincent wanted his son to inherit without exposing him publicly, Luca's incapacity and childlessness mattered enormously.
But Vincent died before he could carry the plan through.
Who had continued it afterward?
Raymond.
Then Vivienne.
But why would Vivienne protect Vincent's secret child for years?
Daniel found the answer in Raymond's trust papers.
A clause transferred twenty percent of the offshore assets to Vivienne if Victor inherited control of certain Costello shares.
Maya summarized it in one sentence.
"She got paid if you stayed sick and I stayed hidden."
Luca looked at Daniel.
"Put that in the prosecution memo."
Daniel smiled without humor.
"Maybe with slightly more legal vocabulary."
The most difficult part was deciding whether to contact Victor.
Elena argued for waiting until investigators understood his mother's role.
Daniel agreed.
Luca hated the idea of another child living inside a lie created by adults.
Maya settled the argument unexpectedly.
"Would you want someone to tell me if Mom had a secret about you?"
Elena looked at her.
"That depends on the secret."
Maya shrugged.
"Big secret."
Luca answered.
"Yes."
"Then Victor should know eventually."
Eventually became sooner when Claire Jensen contacted Daniel first.
She had seen news reports that federal agents searched North Lake records.
She requested a private meeting.
She also said Victor knew nothing about his father.
Luca understood that pain too well.
They arranged a secure video call.
Claire appeared tired, frightened, and angry.
"I have spent seventeen years making sure the Costello name stayed away from my son."
Luca kept his voice calm.
"Why?"
"Because Vincent asked me to."
"Why?"
Claire looked down.
"He said his family was dangerous."
Maya sat outside the room and did not hear the rest.
Claire described Vincent visiting secretly for years.
He loved Victor, but refused to acknowledge him publicly.
Six months before Vincent died, he arrived terrified.
He said Raymond had turned a temporary plan involving Luca into something permanent.
Vincent wanted to confess.
He wanted to restore Luca's medical care and tell him everything.
Raymond threatened to expose Victor and drag Claire into the family conflict.
"Vincent told me he had made the worst decision of his life," Claire said.
Luca's voice was hard.
"He did."
Claire nodded through tears.
"He knew."
"Did he say anything about Vivienne?"
Claire hesitated.
"He said Raymond's daughter was more ambitious than Raymond realized."
Daniel leaned closer.
"Anything specific?"
"He said if something happened to him, I should never trust a woman in blue."
Luca felt a chill.
Vivienne had worn blue for years.
Not occasionally.
Almost exclusively.
Claire continued.
"I thought he was being dramatic."
Then she reached off camera and lifted a sealed envelope.
"He left this with me the night before he died."
Luca stopped breathing normally.
"What is it?"
"I don't know."
"You never opened it?"
"He told me it belonged to you."
She held it closer to the camera.
May you like
Across the front, in Vincent's handwriting, were four words.
FOR LUCA, IF I FAIL.
