Chapter 4 - The Road Behind Them.

Daniel looked through the rear window without turning his head too obviously.

The highway behind them was dark except for a scattered line of headlights.

Luca handed him the phone.

"Can you trace it?"

"Not from here."

Daniel studied the second photograph.

"This was taken from behind and above our lane."

"Truck?"

"Maybe an SUV."

Elena sat across from them in the rear cabin of the armored vehicle.

She knew immediately that something was wrong.

"What happened?"

Luca hesitated.

Elena's expression hardened.

"Do not protect me by keeping me uninformed."

He handed her the phone.

She looked at the image of their convoy.

Every trace of color left her face.

Maya was asleep beside her with her head against a folded coat.

Elena lowered her voice.

"They're following us?"

"Someone is."

"Turn around."

"Back to the estate?"

"Anywhere else."

Daniel shook his head.

"Changing direction without a plan tells whoever is watching that we spotted them."

Elena looked at him sharply.

"They already sent us a photograph."

Daniel had no answer to that.

Luca pressed the intercom button.

"Take Exit 41."

The driver responded immediately.

"That's not the lake route."

"I know."

Daniel looked at Luca.

"Where are we going?"

"A freight yard."

"Why?"

"Because it has six exits, private cameras, and men who owe me favors."

Elena stared at him.

"That sentence did not make me feel safer."

"It wasn't designed to."

Maya stirred.

"Are we there?"

Elena touched her hair.

"Not yet."

The convoy left the highway and entered an industrial district lined with dark warehouses.

The following headlights remained three cars back.

Daniel watched them through the mirror.

"Black SUV."

Luca nodded.

"Plate?"

"Covered."

The freight yard gates opened as the Costello vehicles approached.

A security truck pulled across the road behind them.

The black SUV accelerated.

For one second, Luca thought it might ram the gate.

Instead, it swerved into a side street and disappeared.

Daniel released a breath.

"They wanted us to know they could reach us."

Luca looked at the sleeping child beside Elena.

"Now I want to know who they are."

A yard supervisor named Frank Malloy met them beside a row of shipping containers.

Frank had worked with Luca before the collapse and looked genuinely shaken to see him in person.

"Mr. Costello."

"Frank."

Frank glanced at the wheelchair.

Then he caught himself.

"Daniel said you needed a clean exit."

"Two vehicles, different plates, no electronic toll tags."

"Already ready."

Maya woke as they transferred cars.

She looked around at the towering containers.

"This is way better than a lake house."

Elena gave her a look.

"You are not having fun."

"I can be scared and think containers are cool."

Luca found that difficult to argue with.

They reached the lake house shortly before midnight.

Before anyone entered, Aaron's replacement team swept every room twice.

They checked windows, attic access, utility panels, and the old detached garage.

Luca watched from the vehicle while Elena kept Maya beside her.

The delay made Maya restless.

She counted porch lights, then counted them again because one flickered.

Elena noticed Luca watching her.

"She does that when she's scared."

"Counts things?"

"Things she can control."

Luca looked at the security men moving through the house.

He understood the instinct.

For twelve years, he had counted medications, appointments, and business votes because those were easier to measure than uncertainty.

The difference was that Maya knew she was scared.

Luca had spent years calling fear discipline.

When the all-clear finally came, he opened the vehicle door himself and transferred into the wheelchair without assistance.

Elena noticed that too but said nothing.

Small choices suddenly mattered more than declarations.

The property sat behind dense trees overlooking dark water.

No lights were visible from the road.

The caretaker had retired years earlier, and Luca had kept the place closed except for basic maintenance.

When the doors opened, the smell of cedar and old furniture came back with a force he had not expected.

He remembered walking through those rooms.

He remembered carrying boxes up the stairs.

He remembered believing he would someday bring children there.

The memory made him look toward Maya.

She had already found the window facing the lake.

"It's huge."

Elena stood beside her.

"Everything in his life is huge."

Luca heard the edge in her voice.

"Not everything."

She looked at him.

Something passed between them that neither named.

Daniel organized watches and communications.

Luca insisted the household staff remain minimal.

No one from the mansion was told the location.

Not Aaron.

Not the regular driver.

Not even Dr. Park until the next morning.

At two in the morning, everyone finally settled.

Luca could not sleep.

His legs ached with a deep heaviness that felt both promising and cruel.

He wheeled into the old library and found Elena standing at the window.

"You should sleep."

She did not turn.

"So should you."

"I gave up being good at that years ago."

"Maya talks about you."

The statement surprised him.

"What does she say?"

"That you're grumpy."

"Accurate."

"That you listen even when you pretend not to."

He said nothing.

Elena turned from the window.

"And that your legs move when you think nobody is watching."

Luca looked down.

"Apparently nobody told her privacy exists."

"She believes privacy is something adults invented to hide interesting things."

For a moment, Elena smiled.

The expression hit Luca like a memory.

A small apartment kitchen.

A woman laughing because he had burned garlic.

Rain against a fire escape.

A summer when he had used only his first name and told no one who his family was.

He stared at Elena.

She noticed.

"What?"

"Did we know each other?"

Her face changed so quickly that the answer arrived before her words.

"No."

Luca felt the lie between them.

Not a dangerous lie.

A frightened one.

"Elena."

"You're tired."

"I remember a woman named Ellie."

Elena turned back toward the lake.

His pulse changed.

"South Side."

She closed her eyes.

"Summer of 2014."

Her hand tightened around the curtain.

Luca felt the room shift.

"Look at me."

She did.

He saw twelve years collapse into one impossible line.

"You were Ellie."

Elena's voice was barely audible.

"Yes."

Luca could not speak for several seconds.

The summer before his collapse had been the last period of his life that felt ordinary.

He had met Ellie at a neighborhood grocery store after dropping a bag of oranges.

She had laughed at him.

He had lied about his last name because he wanted one person to know Luca, not Costello.

They had spent ten weeks together.

Then he had left for what was supposed to be a short business trip.

Six weeks later, he had collapsed.

By the time he regained any control over his life, months had vanished into hospitals and treatment.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Elena laughed once, bitterly.

"Tell you what?"

"That you knew me."

"I didn't know Luca from that summer was Luca Costello."

"But when you started working at the estate?"

"I recognized you."

"And said nothing."

"What was I supposed to say?"

Her anger rose.

"Hello, remember the woman you disappeared on twelve years ago?"

Luca flinched.

"I didn't disappear by choice."

"I know that now."

"You didn't know then."

"No."

Elena looked down.

"Then I learned you had collapsed."

"How?"

"News archives."

"Why didn't you contact me?"

Her eyes filled with something that looked more like exhaustion than tears.

"I tried."

Luca went still.

"What?"

"I called the number you gave me."

"It was disconnected."

"I wrote to the address."

"Which address?"

"The apartment."

Luca remembered the lease being terminated while he was hospitalized.

Elena continued.

"Then I found the Costello name in the news and called your office."

His chest tightened.

"Who answered?"

"A man."

"Name?"

"Raymond."

The room seemed to lose all sound.

"Raymond Cross?"

"I don't know."

"What did he say?"

Elena's voice became flat.

"He said Luca Costello had no interest in hearing from people connected to his life before the medical event."

Luca gripped the wheelchair rim.

Raymond again.

"Anything else?"

Elena looked at him.

"He asked whether I was calling about money."

Luca felt sick.

"Were you?"

"No."

She wiped at one eye angrily.

"I was calling because I was pregnant."

The words stopped him completely.

Neither moved.

Neither breathed normally.

From the doorway came a small sound.

Maya stood there holding a glass of water.

She looked at her mother.

Then at Luca.

"Pregnant with who?"

May you like

Elena's face went white.

Luca stared at Maya and saw, for the first time, the shape of his own eyes looking back at him.
