Chapter 8 - The Woman in Blue.

Vivienne Cross had spent two days in a private room at the Costello estate under voluntary restriction.
Her attorney had arrived within hours of the syringe discovery.
He advised her not to answer questions.
She followed that advice perfectly.
Then Dr. Hale died.
Daniel stopped treating her silence as a temporary inconvenience.
He contacted federal investigators and turned over the laboratory findings, the burned archive evidence, and Hale's recorded statement.
By noon, the estate was no longer merely Luca's private investigation.
It was an active criminal inquiry.
Vivienne was interviewed offsite with counsel present.
Luca was advised not to contact her.
He hated being advised not to do anything.
He followed the instruction anyway.
Maya approved.
"Good."
Luca looked at her over breakfast.
"Good?"
"Mom says you think rules are suggestions."
Elena nearly choked on her coffee.
"I said some rules."
"You said rich men hear rules differently."
Luca looked at Elena.
"Do you have a collection of statements about rich men?"
"More every day."
For a few seconds, the lake house felt almost normal.
Then Daniel entered carrying a folder and normal disappeared.
"We found Calder's flight."
Luca set down his cup.
"Where?"
"A charter left Midway two hours after he vanished."
"Destination?"
"Toronto."
"Passenger manifest?"
"False name."
"How do you know it was him?"
Daniel placed a security still on the table.
Calder was visible beneath a baseball cap walking toward the private terminal.
Beside him was a woman in a dark coat.
Her face was partly hidden.
Maya leaned closer.
"That's Vivienne."
Daniel looked at her.
"It can't be."
"Why?"
"Vivienne was at the estate."
Maya pointed to the image.
"Then it's somebody who walks like her."
Luca stared at the woman's posture.
One shoulder slightly higher than the other.
The left hand carried the handbag.
Vivienne always carried bags in her left hand because of an old wrist injury.
But Daniel was right.
Vivienne had been physically present at the estate during that flight.
"Sister?" Elena asked.
Daniel shook his head.
"Only child."
"Mother?"
"Dead."
Maya tapped the image.
"Maybe she has a person who dresses like her."
Luca looked at Daniel.
Daniel sighed.
"I hate when that makes more sense than our theories."
The woman was identified by evening.
The identification came from an airport employee who remembered the dark coat because its silver clasp had caught on a security divider.
That tiny detail led investigators to a boutique purchase charged to Vivienne's household account.
The coat itself had been delivered to Celeste two days before the flight.
Daniel placed the receipt beside the surveillance still.
"This was staged in advance."
Luca nodded.
"Which means Calder's disappearance was planned before the syringe was exposed."
Priya disagreed slightly.
"Or they always maintained an exit plan and activated it when things went wrong."
That possibility was worse.
It suggested the conspiracy had emergency procedures just like a legitimate business.
Routes.
Cash.
Aliases.
Decoys.
Luca had built contingency plans for companies.
Someone had built one around keeping him disabled.
The professionalism of it disturbed him more than desperation would have.
Her name was Celeste Ward.
She had worked as Vivienne's personal assistant for nine years.
She was close in height, build, and coloring.
Security footage from the estate showed Celeste leaving through a service entrance the morning after the syringe incident wearing jeans and a gray sweater.
Three hours later, a woman matching her build entered a private aviation terminal in Vivienne's coat.
"Why disguise herself as Vivienne?" Elena asked.
Daniel replied.
"Maybe she wasn't disguising herself for cameras."
Luca understood.
"Maybe Calder believed Vivienne was the one meeting him."
"Exactly."
Celeste had disappeared too.
Her apartment was empty.
Investigators found one detail that did not fit a clean escape.
Her refrigerator was full.
A dry-cleaning ticket waited beside the door.
A prescription she had paid for remained unopened on the kitchen counter.
People planning to disappear usually settled small things or abandoned them knowingly.
Celeste's apartment looked like someone expected to return that evening.
Daniel considered the possibility that she had been moved against her will.
Luca considered something else.
"Or she wanted us to think she left in a hurry."
Priya agreed.
The cash withdrawal could fund an escape, but it could also fund a staged one.
Security cameras at her building showed Celeste leaving with only a handbag.
No suitcase.
No coat despite the cold.
Then a delivery driver entered the building carrying a large garment bag thirty minutes later.
He left without it.
The driver's account had been created under a false name.
By the time investigators traced the vehicle, it had been abandoned near a commuter station.
The whole scene had the careful messiness of someone trying to look careless.
Her accounts showed a cash withdrawal of thirty thousand dollars the previous week.
She had purchased two prepaid phones.
One was already inactive.
The other pinged briefly near Niagara Falls before going dark.
The conspiracy kept expanding sideways.
Luca began to understand why Raymond had maintained it for so long.
No single person knew everything.
Each person carried one piece.
Remove one, and the structure survived.
That afternoon, Luca walked twelve steps with a cane.
The physical therapist stayed close without touching him.
Maya counted each step loudly.
"Eight."
Luca moved his left foot.
"Nine."
His knee trembled.
"Ten."
Elena stood near the door holding her breath.
"Eleven."
Luca's right foot landed.
"Twelve."
He reached the chair and lowered himself carefully.
Maya threw both hands in the air.
"Twelve."
Luca's chest rose and fell hard.
"You already said that."
"It deserved repeating."
Elena brought him water.
Their fingers touched around the glass.
For one second, they both remembered the summer before everything changed.
Elena pulled her hand away first.
"Don't make that face."
"What face?"
"The memory face."
Maya looked between them.
"You have too many faces."
Luca groaned.
"Please go find something expensive to break."
"Mom said no."
"Of course she did."
The moment was interrupted by Aaron calling from Chicago.
Luca had kept him at the estate while Daniel investigated his background.
Nothing tied Aaron to the conspiracy.
In fact, new evidence suggested Aaron had unknowingly disrupted it twice.
Three years earlier, he had reported a missing medication shipment.
Vivienne explained it as a paperwork error.
One year earlier, he had questioned why an outside doctor entered through the service wing at night.
The doctor had been Calder.
Aaron now sounded angry.
"We found something in the old security room."
Luca put the call on speaker.
"What?"
"A hidden network recorder."
Daniel leaned forward.
"Independent from the main cameras?"
"Yes."
"How old?"
"At least ten years."
Luca felt a pulse of interest.
"Who installed it?"
Aaron hesitated.
"Label says Cross Security Consulting."
Raymond again.
The recorder contained hundreds of hours of low-resolution video from hallways that were supposedly unmonitored.
Most footage had been overwritten.
Some archived clips survived.
One clip dated eleven years earlier showed Dr. Hale entering Luca's bedroom after midnight.
Another showed Raymond carrying a small medical cooler.
Then they found a clip from the year Maya was born.
Raymond stood in the study speaking to someone just outside camera range.
The audio was weak but recoverable.
Daniel's technician enhanced it.
Raymond's voice emerged through static.
"The girl changes the succession."
A second voice answered.
Male.
Low.
Familiar.
Luca listened again.
The voice said, "Then make sure Luca never knows she exists."
Elena covered her mouth.
Maya looked at Luca.
He recognized the voice.
It was Vincent.
The room went silent.
Then a third voice entered the recording.
A woman's voice.
Young, controlled, unmistakable.
"And if Elena comes back?"
Raymond answered.
"You handle it, Vivienne."
May you like
Luca closed his eyes.
Vivienne had known about Maya from the beginning.
