Chapter 10 - If I Fail.

The envelope arrived under federal escort the next afternoon.
Luca recognized Vincent's handwriting before Daniel placed it on the table.
His brother always pressed too hard with a pen.
The letters leaned slightly forward as though even his handwriting was impatient.
Maya stood at the doorway.
Elena held her shoulder.
"This is adult business."
Maya looked at the envelope.
"It's family business."
Luca surprised Elena by agreeing.
"She can stay."
Elena gave him a look.
"Within reason."
Maya sat quietly.
Daniel documented the envelope before opening it.
Inside were six handwritten pages and a small flash drive.
The first line made Luca's chest tighten.
LUCA, IF YOU ARE READING THIS, I WAS TOO LATE.
He read the letter aloud.
Vincent admitted approving a plan to temporarily incapacitate Luca during a leadership dispute.
He claimed Raymond assured him the compound would cause weakness for only several days.
Vincent wanted Luca out of an emergency board vote concerning a merger.
He thought he was buying time.
Instead, Luca collapsed and remained hospitalized for months.
Vincent wrote that he tried to stop the deception after learning Raymond and Hale had falsified the diagnosis.
Raymond threatened him with evidence of the original plan.
If exposed, Vincent would face prison and destroy the Costello companies.
So Vincent stayed silent.
The silence became years.
Luca had to stop reading twice.
The second time, Maya reached for his hand under the table.
He did not pull away.
The letter continued.
Vincent learned about Elena's pregnancy through Raymond.
He panicked because a child would complicate the succession and could expose why Raymond monitored Luca's private contacts.
Vincent admitted saying the words heard on the security recording.
MAKE SURE LUCA NEVER KNOWS SHE EXISTS.
Luca stared at the sentence.
Knowing Vincent regretted it did not erase it.
Maya squeezed his hand harder.
The final page changed everything again.
Vincent wrote that Vivienne discovered the scheme years after it began.
Instead of exposing it, she used it.
She learned which compounds maintained Luca's weakness.
She learned which doctors could be controlled with money.
She learned how the incapacity clause shifted authority.
Then she began building her own network.
Vincent claimed Raymond became frightened of his daughter.
He wanted out too.
Before Raymond could act, he suffered a sudden fatal heart event.
Officially natural.
Vincent did not believe it.
He wrote one final warning.
IF VIVIENNE KNOWS I LEFT THIS, SHE WILL COME FOR IT.
Everyone looked at the flash drive.
Daniel immediately sealed it in an evidence bag.
"We image it offline."
Luca nodded.
"Now."
The drive contained financial ledgers, audio recordings, and copies of emails Vincent had collected.
It also contained a folder labeled APOLOGIES that held nothing except unfinished drafts.
Vincent had started letters to Luca at least eleven times.
Most ended after a paragraph.
One ended after three words.
I DID THIS.
Luca stared at that fragment longer than any complete document.
He could almost see his brother sitting alone, trying to transform guilt into language and failing.
Daniel asked whether Luca wanted the drafts preserved with the evidence copy.
"Yes."
"Even though they do not prove anything?"
Luca looked at the screen.
"They prove he knew what he had become."
Elena heard the bitterness in his voice.
She also heard grief.
Luca did not try to separate them anymore.
One recording captured Raymond arguing with Vivienne.
Raymond's voice sounded older and frightened.
"This was supposed to end years ago."
Vivienne answered calmly.
"It ends when control is secure."
"Luca is not a child."
"No."
Her voice sharpened.
"He's a man everyone obeys even from a wheelchair."
Raymond said something too faint to hear.
Vivienne responded.
"Then imagine what happens if he stands."
Maya looked at Luca.
The exact fear from the foyer now had a history.
Vivienne had always known recovery threatened more than a medical narrative.
It threatened her entire structure.
Another file showed payments to Calder.
Another linked Celeste to travel arrangements.
Then Priya found a recent spreadsheet hidden in an encrypted folder.
It listed planned transfers scheduled for the following month.
The final line stunned Daniel.
SUCCESSION TRIGGER - L.C. PERMANENT INCAPACITY CERTIFICATION.
Luca stared at him.
"What does that mean?"
Daniel pulled up the foundation bylaws.
"They were preparing to certify you permanently incapable of managing your affairs."
"They already treated me that way."
"Legally this would have gone further."
Daniel's voice became grim.
"You would have lost voting control of multiple trusts."
"To whom?"
"The trustees."
"Vivienne?"
"And two others."
One trustee was an elderly banker with no known involvement.
The other was Conrad Vale, a corporate attorney who had worked closely with Raymond for decades.
Conrad had signed several North Lake consulting contracts.
He was still alive.
He was still practicing.
And he had attended dinner at Luca's mansion six weeks earlier.
Luca remembered him raising a glass and praising Luca's resilience.
The memory made his skin crawl.
Daniel contacted federal investigators.
They moved to secure Conrad's office.
They arrived forty minutes too late.
Conrad was gone.
His assistant said he left carrying two document boxes after receiving a phone call.
Security footage showed a dark sedan collecting him.
The driver was Celeste Ward.
Luca stared at the image.
"She's back from Canada."
Daniel nodded.
"Or never went."
The woman at the airport could have been a decoy.
Calder could have gone another direction entirely.
Every answer exposed another layer of misdirection.
That night, the lake house security system lost power for eleven seconds.
Backup batteries activated immediately.
Aaron, now cleared enough to join them, checked the perimeter.
No breach appeared.
Then Maya noticed the baseball she had left on the porch was gone.
In its place sat a blue velvet ribbon.
Elena went pale.
"Inside. Now."
Maya obeyed without arguing.
That frightened Luca more than if she had resisted.
Aaron searched the grounds.
Fresh footprints ended near the tree line.
A drone was found caught in branches fifty yards from the house.
Its camera had been pointed toward the windows.
Daniel examined the memory card.
The drone had recorded the family for nearly an hour.
One clip showed Luca walking with his cane.
Another showed Maya beside him.
The final image was a still frame of Elena closing the curtains.
A text file on the card contained one sentence.
THE GIRL SHOULD NEVER HAVE COME THROUGH THE HEDGE.
Luca read it once.
Then he looked at Aaron.
"Move Elena and Maya tonight."
Elena heard him.
"No."
"This isn't a discussion."
Her eyes flashed.
"It absolutely is."
"They found the house."
"Then moving us could expose another location."
"Staying exposes you here."
"Stop deciding for us."
Maya stood between them, frightened but listening.
Luca caught himself.
Elena was right.
Again.
He lowered his voice.
"What do you want to do?"
Elena looked toward the dark windows.
"I want Maya somewhere ordinary."
"Ordinary isn't secure."
"Neither is your world."
That sentence landed harder than she intended.
Luca looked away.
Maya touched his sleeve.
"Dad."
It was the first time she had called him that.
Everyone froze.
Maya seemed surprised by herself.
Then she continued.
"I don't want to run because of her."
Luca's chest tightened.
"This isn't about bravery."
"I know."
"It's about being safe."
"Then make this place safe."
Aaron spoke quietly.
"We can."
Luca looked at him.
Aaron continued.
"We stop hiding and set a controlled perimeter."
Daniel understood immediately.
"Use the house as bait."
Elena's expression sharpened.
"Absolutely not with Maya inside."
"No," Luca said.
"Not with either of you inside."
A plan began forming.
They would make it appear Elena and Maya remained at the lake house.
In reality, they would move before dawn under federal protection.
Luca would stay.
So would Aaron.
The house would remain lit and active.
If Vivienne's people returned, they would find a trap.
Elena hated the plan.
Maya hated leaving Luca.
Luca hated both reactions.
But by sunrise, Elena and Maya were gone.
At noon, a dark sedan appeared on the road overlooking the lake.
Aaron watched through binoculars.
"Two people."
Luca stood behind him using his cane.
"Can you identify them?"
Aaron adjusted focus.
"Driver is Celeste."
"Passenger?"
Aaron went still.
"You need to see this."
Luca took the binoculars.
The passenger stepped from the vehicle.
For a moment, Luca thought his eyes were wrong.
The man was older, thinner, and wearing a gray cap.
But Luca knew the face.
May you like
Dr. Marcus Calder had returned.
And he was carrying a medical case.
