Chapter 12 - The Dinner They Planned to Steal.

Three days later, the Costello mansion glowed as though nothing had happened.

Cars arrived beneath the stone portico one after another.

Board members stepped into the foyer wearing formal suits and practiced expressions.

Most had heard rumors.

Few knew the truth.

Vivienne had been released pending further investigation because prosecutors were still assembling charges.

Her passport had been surrendered.

Her attorney promised she would appear when required.

She arrived at the dinner anyway.

Daniel almost admired the nerve.

Luca did not.

He waited upstairs in the room that had once been his father's private office.

A cane rested beside him.

The wheelchair remained in the foyer below.

Empty.

That was intentional.

Maya and Elena were not in the mansion.

They watched from a secure federal location through a private video feed.

Maya complained loudly that the camera angle was bad.

Elena told her this was not television.

Maya replied that if adults wanted kids to stay calm, they should at least frame important events properly.

Luca heard this through his earpiece and smiled.

"She's criticizing federal surveillance."

Daniel adjusted his tie.

"At eight."

"Imagine sixteen."

"I try not to."

The board gathered in the dining room beneath the crystal chandelier.

Conrad Vale's chair remained empty.

Nobody knew where he was.

Vivienne sat near the far end of the table wearing a dark blue dress.

She had chosen blue again.

Luca wondered whether it was habit, arrogance, or a message.

The chairman, Everett Sloan, checked his watch.

"Where is Luca?"

Vivienne answered before anyone else.

"Resting."

Everett looked at her.

"You are no longer overseeing his medical schedule."

Vivienne smiled faintly.

"No, but I know him."

Daniel entered from the side door.

"Apparently not as well as you believed."

Several directors shifted uncomfortably.

Vivienne looked toward the empty wheelchair in the foyer.

"Where is he?"

Daniel stepped aside.

Luca appeared at the top of the short dining-room stairs.

He stood without assistance.

A simple black cane supported his right hand.

The room became silent.

Everett rose slowly.

One director whispered something that sounded like a prayer.

Vivienne did not move.

That was the reaction Luca watched most closely.

Her face changed by less than an inch.

But her left hand tightened around the table edge.

Luca descended one step.

Then another.

The effort was real.

He did not disguise it.

He did not need to.

Each controlled step destroyed twelve years of assumptions.

When he reached the dining room floor, Maya's voice whispered through his earpiece.

"Ten out of ten entrance."

Luca nearly lost his serious expression.

He reached the head of the table.

"Good evening."

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Everett found his voice.

"Luca."

"Sit down."

Everyone did.

Vivienne remained still.

Luca looked at her.

"You too."

She sat.

Daniel distributed sealed folders.

Inside were summaries of the laboratory findings, historical payments, altered medical records, and the Vincent letter.

Luca did not include every detail.

The criminal investigation still mattered.

He included enough.

Everett read the first page and went pale.

"Is this verified?"

Daniel answered.

"By independent laboratories, forensic accountants, and federal investigators."

Vivienne laughed softly.

"Federal investigators have not charged me."

Luca looked at her.

"Not yet."

"Then perhaps you should stop presenting accusation as fact."

Daniel raised one hand.

"The documents distinguish allegation from verified evidence."

Vivienne's eyes stayed on Luca.

"You've become theatrical."

"I learned from people who staged twelve years of medical theater around me."

The board shifted.

Everett looked at Vivienne.

"Did you know Luca had preserved motor signaling?"

Her attorney, seated behind her, leaned forward.

"Do not answer."

Vivienne ignored him.

"I knew doctors occasionally observed involuntary movement."

Luca's voice stayed calm.

"Maya observed voluntary movement."

"A child."

"A child who asked the question trained professionals avoided."

Vivienne gave him a pitying look.

"You are building a family fantasy around an emotionally vulnerable girl."

The room changed.

Luca's grip tightened on the cane.

Daniel watched him carefully.

Maya's voice disappeared from the earpiece because Elena had muted the feed.

Luca took one breath.

Then another.

"You knew she was my daughter before she was born."

Vivienne's composure flickered.

Several board members looked up sharply.

"That is absurd."

Daniel pressed a button.

The old security recording played through hidden speakers.

Raymond's voice filled the dining room.

"The girl changes the succession."

Vincent answered.

"Then make sure Luca never knows she exists."

Then Vivienne's younger voice.

"And if Elena comes back?"

The recording ended.

No one moved.

Vivienne stared at Daniel.

"That recording is manipulated."

"Forensic authentication says otherwise."

Her attorney whispered urgently.

Vivienne ignored him again.

"You think this makes you strong?"

Luca looked at her.

"Standing does not make me strong."

He placed both hands on the table.

"Knowing who wanted me down does."

Everett closed the folder.

"I move that Vivienne Cross be immediately suspended from every Costello board, trust advisory role, and foundation position pending investigation."

A second director raised his hand.

"Second."

Vivienne's face went cold.

"You cannot do this."

Everett looked at her.

"We can."

The vote was unanimous.

Vivienne stood.

Her attorney tried to guide her toward the door.

She pulled away.

"You have no idea what your brother did."

Luca's voice remained flat.

"I know enough."

"No."

Her eyes brightened with anger.

"You know the version he wrote when he was frightened."

"Then give me yours."

Her attorney whispered, "Do not."

Vivienne looked around the table.

Years of influence were disappearing in front of her.

"Vincent wanted you gone."

Luca did not flinch.

"I know."

"He chose the compound."

"I know."

"He told my father to keep Elena away."

"I know."

Vivienne stepped closer.

"And when he changed his mind, he expected everyone else to carry the consequences."

Luca studied her.

There was truth inside her anger.

That made it more dangerous.

"So you continued it?"

Her attorney stood.

"Vivienne."

She finally stopped.

Too late.

Every phone in the room had recorded the exchange.

Daniel saw it too.

Vivienne realized what she had almost admitted.

She turned toward the foyer.

A uniformed federal agent entered.

"Ms. Cross, we need to speak with you regarding new evidence received this afternoon."

Her attorney stepped forward.

"On what basis?"

The agent held up a document bag.

Inside was a prepaid phone recovered from Conrad Vale's rental house.

The screen displayed messages with a contact saved as V.

One message read: BURN THE ARCHIVE BEFORE MERCER GETS THERE.

Another read: HALE CANNOT CHANGE HIS STORY AGAIN.

Vivienne stared at the phone.

Her face finally lost all control.

"That is not mine."

The agent said nothing.

Luca watched her leave between investigators.

For the first time, she looked back at the empty wheelchair.

Then she looked at him standing beside the table.

The fear was there again.

Only now everyone could see it.

After the room cleared, Luca remained alone beneath the chandelier.

His legs shook from the strain.

Daniel approached.

"Sit before you fall."

"You sound like Maya."

"Maya is right frequently enough to become irritating."

Luca lowered himself into a chair.

His phone rang.

Maya appeared on video.

"You did not fall."

"That is your opening comment?"

"I was worried."

Elena appeared behind her.

"We both were."

Luca looked at them.

The board victory felt smaller than the two faces on his screen.

"Come home tomorrow."

Elena hesitated.

"Is it safe?"

Luca looked toward the foyer where agents still worked.

"Safer."

Maya grinned.

"Does the baseball field still exist?"

"Unfortunately."

"Then yes."

Elena laughed.

Luca did too.

Then Daniel's phone buzzed.

He read the message and stopped smiling.

"Conrad was found."

Luca looked at him.

"Alive?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

Daniel turned the screen.

A traffic camera image showed Conrad being detained at the Canadian border.

He had two passports, eighty thousand dollars in cash, and a letter addressed to prosecutors.

Daniel opened the scanned first page.

Conrad had written one sentence at the top.

VIVIENNE DID NOT ORDER VINCENT'S DEATH.

May you like

Luca stared at it.

The case they thought was closing had just opened one final door.
