Chapter 6 - The Name They Buried.

Maya's question remained in the library long after the paternity report had been folded shut.

Luca had spent hours wondering who knew about his treatment.

He had not yet considered that the same people might have known about Elena and Maya.

Elena looked at him with fresh alarm.

"Why would they care about Maya?"

Daniel, still connected by video from Chicago, did not answer immediately.

That hesitation frightened Elena more than a quick denial would have.

"Daniel."

He leaned toward his camera.

"If Raymond intercepted your call while you were pregnant, then he knew Luca might have an heir."

Maya frowned.

"What's an heir?"

Luca answered before anyone else could.

"Someone who receives family property later."

Maya made a face.

"That sounds boring."

Under different circumstances, Luca would have laughed.

Elena did not.

"You are saying Maya could have mattered to whatever Raymond was doing."

Daniel nodded.

"Potentially."

"She was not even born."

"People have done worse things over inheritance structures."

Luca cut him off.

"Enough."

Daniel understood.

Maya understood too.

She closed her book and stood.

"You're doing the adult thing again."

Elena looked at her.

"What adult thing?"

"Talking around the scary part."

Luca felt a strange ache in his chest.

His daughter had known him as her father for less than ten minutes and was already exposing his habits.

"The scary part," Luca said carefully, "is that somebody may have made decisions because they wanted control over my money and my life."

Maya looked at him.

"And me?"

"I don't know."

"But you will find out."

"Yes."

She nodded as though a contract had been signed.

"Okay."

Elena took Maya upstairs after that.

Luca remained with Daniel and Dr. Park.

The conversation changed immediately.

Daniel pulled up old Costello trust documents.

Before Luca's collapse, his estate plan had contained a simple clause.

If he died without descendants, a controlling block of Costello Holdings shares would pass into a family foundation overseen by three trustees.

One trustee had been Raymond Cross.

Luca stared at the clause.

"I changed that years ago."

"After your collapse," Daniel said.

"Yes."

"But Raymond would have known the original structure."

Dr. Park crossed her arms.

"If Luca had a child, Raymond's influence over those shares disappeared."

Daniel nodded.

"Exactly."

Luca felt cold despite the fire burning in the lake house hearth.

"So Raymond had two problems."

Daniel looked at him.

"A recovering Luca and a child."

Luca thought of Elena's unanswered calls.

Raymond had not merely kept an old girlfriend away.

He may have been protecting a financial structure.

"Find every call record from my office during that year."

Daniel sighed.

"Twelve years is a long retention request."

"Pay whoever needs to search archives."

"Money does not recreate deleted telecom logs."

Luca gave him a look.

"Try first."

Daniel smiled faintly.

"There he is."

"Who?"

"The Luca who thinks impossible is usually a pricing problem."

Luca did not smile back.

"This time it might be."

By evening, Daniel's investigators uncovered something better than phone logs.

Raymond Cross had kept handwritten appointment books.

After his death, Vivienne donated most of his office papers to a private family archive.

One box had been cataloged but never opened.

Daniel obtained access through Raymond's estate attorney.

Inside was a calendar from the year Maya was born.

On a September page appeared one handwritten entry.

ELLIE H. - CHILD - DO NOT CONNECT TO L.C.

Daniel sent Luca a photograph.

Luca read the line until the words blurred.

Elena stood behind him.

She did not cry.

Her silence was worse.

"He knew," she said.

Luca nodded.

"Yes."

"He knew I was pregnant."

"Yes."

"And he chose not to tell you."

Luca's hands tightened.

"Yes."

Elena walked to the window.

"I spent twelve years wondering whether I had been stupid."

Luca said nothing.

"I wondered whether you had given me a fake name because you knew exactly what you were doing."

"Elena."

"I wondered whether calling your office had been humiliating because everyone knew I was some woman you wanted forgotten."

Luca felt each sentence land like a separate accusation even though none was aimed at him.

"You deserved the truth."

She turned.

"So did you."

For the first time, the anger between them aimed in the same direction.

Maya came downstairs wearing socks and carrying a blanket.

She saw the photograph on Luca's screen.

"Is that proof?"

Elena looked at her daughter.

"It proves Raymond knew about you."

Maya climbed onto the couch beside Luca.

"Was he bad?"

Luca considered the question.

"He did bad things."

"Is that different?"

"Sometimes."

Maya pulled the blanket over her knees.

"Did you like him?"

"I trusted him."

"That's not the same."

Luca looked at her.

"No."

Maya leaned back.

"Maybe that's why you didn't notice."

He could not argue.

The next morning brought another breakthrough.

Daniel's investigator found Dr. Malcolm Hale.

He had not gone to Arizona.

He had checked into a private rehabilitation center in New Mexico under his middle name after suffering a cardiac event.

He was alive.

He was also refusing visitors.

Luca made one call.

Daniel objected immediately.

"You cannot pressure a medically vulnerable witness."

"I'm not pressuring him."

"You sent your jet."

"For you."

"That is still pressure adjacent."

"Go talk to him."

Daniel sighed.

"I hate working for you."

"No, you hate losing arguments."

"Same feeling."

Daniel flew west that afternoon.

Before he left, Luca made him promise not to offer Hale anything that sounded like forgiveness.

Daniel stared at him.

"I negotiate facts, not absolution."

"Good."

"You do realize prosecutors decide deals, not me."

"I know."

Daniel picked up his coat.

"And you do realize that useful testimony may come from people you despise."

Luca looked toward the therapy room.

"I know that too."

The answer surprised Daniel because it lacked argument.

Luca had begun to understand that truth did not arrive from clean people in clean packages.

Sometimes it came from cowards, accomplices, and frightened men trying to reduce the consequences of their own choices.

He did not have to admire the messenger to examine the message.

That distinction would become important before the week ended.

Luca remained at the lake house beginning physical rehabilitation under Dr. Park's supervision.

The first session was brutal.

He stood between parallel bars for twenty-three seconds.

His arms shook from carrying too much of his weight.

His legs trembled violently.

Sweat ran down his back.

Maya watched from a chair despite Elena telling her she could go play.

At twenty-four seconds, Luca's knees gave way.

Dr. Park and the therapist lowered him safely onto the bench.

Luca slammed one palm against the rail.

"Again."

Dr. Park shook her head.

"Not today."

"Again."

"You are not negotiating with your nervous system."

"I've negotiated with worse."

Maya stood.

"She's right."

Luca turned toward her.

"Whose side are you on?"

"Your legs'."

Dr. Park smiled.

"I like her."

Luca looked at Maya.

"Traitor."

"Rest."

The word sounded exactly like Elena.

That frightened him more than the therapy.

Daniel called from New Mexico at nine that evening.

His face on the screen looked grim.

"Hale agreed to talk."

Luca leaned forward.

"What did he say?"

"He says your original collapse was induced."

Every person in the room stopped moving.

Elena sat beside Maya.

Dr. Park closed her notebook.

Luca felt his pulse in his throat.

"Induced by what?"

Daniel glanced off camera.

"He claims Raymond brought him bloodwork showing exposure to a compound before you ever entered the hospital."

"Then why diagnose a vascular event?"

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Because Raymond threatened to destroy him professionally if he didn't."

Luca felt rage rise.

"Hale could have gone to police."

"He admits that."

"He could have told me."

"He admits that too."

"Instead he watched me lose twelve years."

Daniel was quiet.

"Yes."

Luca wheeled away from the screen because he did not trust his face.

Maya reached for his hand.

He let her.

Daniel continued.

"There's more."

Luca turned back.

"Of course there is."

"Hale says Raymond did not create the plan."

Luca's anger paused.

"Who did?"

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

"According to Hale, Raymond was protecting someone else."

Luca's voice dropped.

"Who?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Your older brother, Vincent."

Luca stared at him.

May you like

Vincent Costello had been dead for seven years.

And until that moment, Luca had never once considered his brother an enemy.
