Discharged but homeless—since the Vales technically owned their marital cottage—Claire called the only person she could trust: her college roommate, Sarah.
Sarah, a tough-as-nails high school teacher in the valley, arrived in a beat-up Subaru. She packed Claire's essentials from the cottage while Evan was at work. That night, sitting in Sarah's small living room, Claire finally let her guard down and cried.
"We fight back," Sarah said, handing her a mug of tea. "First thing tomorrow, we get you a shark of a lawyer."
