Chapter 16: The Turning Point
The defense's star witness was Evan. He was supposed to testify that Claire was clumsy and unstable. But as Evan sat on the stand, he looked at Claire, who was holding baby Maya in the back row.
"Mr. Vale, what did you see that night?" the defense attorney asked smoothly.

Evan paused. He looked at his father, then at his daughter. "I..." Evan's voice cracked. "I lied. My father hit her. He punched my pregnant wife. I was just too much of a coward to stop him."
