Chapter 9: The Lion’s Den

The grand ballroom of the Copley Plaza was a sea of crystal chandeliers, flowing champagne, and polite, venomous conversation. Flashbulbs erupted like a thunderstorm as Dante and Aria stepped out of their armored limousine and onto the red carpet.

Dante placed a warm, heavy hand on the small of her bare back, guiding her through the chaotic press line. He wore a bespoke charcoal tuxedo that fit perfectly over his broad frame, looking every inch the ruthless king he was. Beside him, Aria was a vision in midnight-blue velvet. The cameras clicked frantically, capturing the striking contrast: the dangerous, shadowed mafia boss and his radiant, untouchable wife.

"Breathe," Dante murmured near her ear as they handed their coats to the coat check. "You look magnificent. Stay close to me."

"I’m not scared," she whispered back, and to her own surprise, she realized it was the truth.

As they descended the grand staircase into the ballroom, the ambient chatter noticeably dropped in volume. Heads turned. Whispers rippled through the crowd of politicians, socialites, and business tycoons. They were waiting to see the dynamic between the infamous Dante Rossi and the delicate Sterling daughter.

It didn't take long for the predator to circle.

Dante had just stepped away to speak with the District Attorney—leaving Matteo standing barely three feet from Aria—when Senator Sterling made his move. He weaved through the crowd with a forced, practiced smile, holding a glass of scotch.

"Aria, my dear," Sterling said smoothly, stepping into her personal space. Matteo instantly shifted, his hand drifting toward the inside of his suit jacket, but Aria held up a single, manicured finger to stall him.

"Senator," Aria replied coldly, refusing to use the word father.

Sterling’s smile faltered, his eyes darting to her exposed shoulders, visibly jarring at the lack of the modest, high-necked dresses he had forced upon her for years. "You’re making a spectacle of yourself. And your husband is isolating you. I haven't been able to reach you for weeks. I suggest you remember who your family is before you burn bridges you can't rebuild."

"My family?" Aria tilted her head, her voice carrying a terrifyingly calm cadence she had learned directly from Dante. "My family is standing across the room, ensuring my safety. You are simply a man who sold his daughter for polling numbers."

Sterling’s face flushed red, the polite mask slipping to reveal the abusive tyrant beneath. "Listen to me, you little—"

"No, you listen to me," Aria cut him off, taking a deliberate step forward. She didn't flinch. She didn't lower her eyes. "Julian is eating through a wire because he forgot his place. If you ever try to intimidate me again, I won't need my husband to handle it. I will release the medical records myself, and I will watch your political career burn to the ground on national television. Am I understood?"

Sterling stared at her, genuinely horrified. The broken, trembling girl he had controlled for decades was gone, replaced by a cold, calculating woman wearing the Rossi name like a loaded gun.

Before the Senator could formulate a response, a heavy, suffocating presence materialized behind Aria. Dante wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her flush against his side. He didn't look at his wife; his lethal, dead-eyed gaze was fixed squarely on Sterling.

"Is there a problem here, Arthur?" Dante asked softly.

Sterling swallowed hard, taking a rapid step back. "No. No problem. Enjoy your evening, Rossi."

As the Senator practically fled into the crowd, Aria let out a long, shaky breath. Dante looked down at her, his eyes blazing with a fierce, possessive pride.

"Remind me never to get on your bad side, Mrs. Rossi."
