Chapter 6: Lines in the Sand

The heavy mahogany front doors slammed shut, echoing with a finality that seemed to shake the very foundations of the Rossi estate. The silence that followed was suffocating. Outside, the tires of Senator Sterling’s black SUVs squealed against the wet asphalt as they sped down the winding driveway, chased off by the silent, lethal presence of the Rossi enforcers.
Aria stood frozen by the conservatory entrance, her chest rising and falling in shallow, erratic gasps. Her father was gone. He had actually been forced to retreat. In her twenty-two years of life, she had never seen Arthur Sterling back down from a fight, nor had she ever seen him denied access to something he considered his property.
Dante slowly turned away from the door, his broad shoulders relaxing fractionally. He gestured for Matteo and his men to clear the room, and within seconds, the massive foyer was empty save for the two of them. He didn't approach her immediately. Instead, he waited, giving her the space to process the seismic shift in her reality.
"He said Julian was in the hospital," Aria whispered, her voice trembling as she finally broke the silence. She gripped the edge of a marble side table to steady her shaking knees. "Did you... did you do that?"
Dante’s expression remained unreadable, though a muscle feathered along his jawline. "I didn't do it personally. But I gave the order, yes."
"Why?" The word tore from her throat, laced with a confusing cocktail of horror and profound relief. "The treaty strictly forbade interfering with my family. My father could use this to wage war against you. He could tear down everything you’ve built in Boston. Over what? Over me?"
"The treaty was a business transaction, Aria," Dante said, his voice a low, steady rumble that commanded the vast space. He finally closed the distance between them, stopping just a few feet away. "In business, if you are sold a damaged asset under false pretenses, the contract is nullified. But you are not an asset. You are my wife."
Aria looked up, her breath catching in her throat. His dark eyes were intense, completely devoid of the calculating coldness she had come to expect from men in power.
"Julian Sterling believed he could brutalize you in the shadows and hand you off to me to finish the job," Dante continued, his tone turning dangerously quiet. "He thought we were the same kind of monster. I had to correct his misconception. He has two broken arms and a shattered jaw. He will spend the next six months drinking his meals through a straw, and he will never raise a hand to you, or any other woman, ever again."
Aria stared at him, the reality of his words washing over her. No one had ever protected her. Her entire life had been about protecting the Sterling name, absorbing the blows so the family’s image remained pristine. Yet here was a notorious crime boss, a man feared throughout the eastern seaboard, risking an all-out war with the political establishment just to ensure she felt safe in her own home.

Tears welled in her eyes, hot and unbidden. She didn't cower. She didn't flinch. For the first time since the wedding, she took a deliberate step toward him. "Thank you," she whispered, the words carrying the weight of a thousand unspoken fears finally being laid to rest.
Dante nodded once, a solemn acknowledgment. "This is your home, Aria. And no one brings violence into your home without paying the price."
