Chapter 2: Out of the Shadows

Aria stayed hidden in the master suite for two full days. She ate the food that magically appeared outside her door on a rolling cart, took long, hot showers without fear of the water being abruptly shut off, and read books from the small private shelf. But by the afternoon of the third day, the isolation began to feel suffocating.
Mustering every ounce of courage she possessed, she unlocked the heavy oak door. The sprawling hallway was empty, lined with expensive modern art and antique vases. The house was frighteningly quiet for the headquarters of a notorious crime syndicate. She padded down the grand staircase, her bare feet sinking into the thick Persian runners. She wasn't looking to escape; she simply wanted to know the layout of her new cage.
She found the library by accident. The door was slightly ajar, revealing walls lined with thousands of leather-bound volumes. Unable to resist, she slipped inside. The room smelled of old paper, leather, and faint cigar smoke. She traced her fingers along the spine of a first edition classic, closing her eyes for just a moment to enjoy the peace.
"If there’s a specific genre you prefer, I can have the collection updated."
Aria gasped and spun around. Dante was sitting in a high-backed leather chair in the darkened corner of the room, a tablet resting on his knee. He wore a simple black button-down shirt, the sleeves rolled up to reveal intricate tattoos on his forearms. He didn't look angry, but his presence was overwhelmingly intense.
"I'm sorry," she stammered, immediately dropping her hand and taking a step back. "I didn't know you were in here. I can go."
"Stop apologizing, Aria," Dante said gently. He set the tablet aside and stood. Aria instinctively braced herself, her shoulders tensing, but Dante immediately stopped moving. He stayed exactly where he was, keeping a solid ten feet of distance between them.
"This is your house now," he continued, his voice calm and steady. "You don't need permission to read a book, walk the halls, or eat in the kitchen. You aren't a prisoner here."
He reached into his pocket, pulled out a sleek new smartphone, and placed it on the edge of the nearest table. Next to it, he set a black credit card.
"The phone is unrestricted. Call whoever you want. The card has no limit. Buy whatever you want." He held her gaze, refusing to let her look away. "I told you on our wedding night that I wouldn't force you into anything. I meant it. You have autonomy here, Aria. It’s time you start practicing how to use it."
Aria stared at the phone and the card, her heart hammering against her ribs. In the Sterling household, money and communication were strictly weaponized to control her. Here, the most dangerous man in Boston was freely handing them over. She looked back up at him, a flicker of genuine curiosity breaking through her fear.

"Why are you doing this?" she whispered.
Dante’s jaw tightened. "Because a cage is still a cage, even if the bars are made of gold. And I don't keep caged birds."
