Chapter 20: Empire of Two

Six Months Later
The conservatory on the edge of the Rossi estate no longer carried the scent of deception. Instead, it smelled of blooming jasmine, rich soil, and fresh espresso. The heavy November rain had long since given way to a bright, golden spring.
Aria sat at a wrought-iron patio table surrounded by orchids, reviewing a stack of legal documents. She wore a perfectly tailored emerald-green pantsuit, her hair pinned up in an elegant twist. The massive emerald ring on her finger no longer felt like a shackle; it felt like a crown.
Over the last six months, she had taken full control of the Rossi syndicate’s legitimate business fronts. While Dante managed the shadows, Aria managed the light. She had restructured their charities, ruthlessly optimized their shipping companies, and proven to be just as formidable in a boardroom as her husband was in a warehouse.
"You’re going to give the accountants a heart attack if you keep finding tax loopholes," a deep, amused voice drawled from the doorway.
Aria looked up, a bright, genuine smile instantly transforming her face. Dante leaned against the glass frame of the conservatory, wearing a casual black button-down, his sleeves rolled up to reveal his tattoos. He looked relaxed, the perpetual tension in his shoulders completely gone.
"The accountants are lazy," Aria shot back playfully, signing the bottom of a contract with a flourish. "I just saved us two million dollars on the downtown real estate acquisition. You should be thanking me."
Dante chuckled, walking over to her. He pulled her out of the chair, wrapping his arms around her waist, and pulled her flush against his chest. "I thank God for you every single day," he murmured, his eyes filled with a soft, enduring reverence.
He pressed a slow, lingering kiss to her lips, tasting of dark coffee and morning sunlight. Aria melted against him, sliding her arms around his neck. There was no hesitation, no flinching, no hidden fears. Their trust was absolute, forged in the fires of an unavoidable war and solidified in the quiet peace of their home.
"The Mayor invited us to the summer gala next week," Aria mentioned softly as they broke apart, resting her chin on his chest.
"Do you want to go?" Dante asked, his thumb gently stroking her hip.
Aria looked out through the glass panes at the sprawling, secure estate they commanded together. She thought of her father, currently sitting in a federal penitentiary cell, and her brother, silenced and stripped of his wealth. The monsters were caged, and she was flying free.
"Yes," Aria said, her eyes flashing with a confident, brilliant light. "Let's go remind the city exactly who runs it."

Dante smiled, a wicked, proud curve of his lips. He kissed her forehead, pulling her impossibly closer.
"Whatever you want, Mrs. Rossi. The world is yours."
