Chapter 14: The Ambush

The atmosphere in the city was crackling with tension, like a wire pulled too taut. It had been forty-eight hours since the Rossi tech team infiltrated Julian’s offshore accounts, and the Chronicle was set to run the exposé the following morning.
To maintain the illusion of normalcy, Dante had insisted they keep their dinner reservation at an exclusive Italian restaurant in the North End. The evening had been flawless, a bubble of peace before the inevitable storm. But as their armored limousine navigated the narrow, rain-slicked streets of downtown Boston, the bubble violently burst.
"Boss, we've got a tail," the driver, a seasoned enforcer named Luca, announced, his voice tight.
Dante instantly went rigid, his hand moving smoothly to the holster beneath his suit jacket. He glanced out the rear window. Two black, unmarked SUVs were speeding up, closing the distance rapidly, ignoring the red lights.
"Evasive," Dante barked. "Get us to the estate."
"They're blocking the intersection!" Luca yelled, slamming on the brakes.
Tires shrieked as a heavy transport truck suddenly pulled out of an alley, blocking the narrow street ahead. The two trailing SUVs boxed them in from behind. It was a perfectly executed kill box.
"Get down!" Dante roared.
He lunged across the backseat, grabbing Aria and forcing her to the floorboards just as the world exploded. The deafening roar of automatic gunfire ripped through the night. The limousine’s ballistic glass spider-webbed under the barrage, holding steady for now, but the heavy caliber rounds were slowly chewing through the armor.
Aria’s heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. But she didn't scream. She didn't freeze. The training sessions in the basement gym, the lessons in controlled breathing, kicked in. She covered her head, making herself a small target, while Dante drew his weapon, his body completely shielding hers.
"Luca, ram the truck!" Dante ordered, shouting over the relentless staccato of gunfire.
"Armor’s failing on the rear side!" Luca yelled, throwing the heavy limousine into reverse, slamming violently into the SUV behind them to create space, then slamming it into drive. The massive engine roared as he drove the reinforced bumper directly into the side of the blocking truck.
Metal crunched. Sparks flew in the darkness. The limousine shoved the lighter truck aside just enough to scrape through the gap. Gunfire pelted the trunk as they tore out of the trap, blowing past a red light and merging onto the highway at breakneck speed.
In the backseat, the deafening noise was replaced by the roaring engine and the hiss of cold rain through the cracked glass. Dante stayed on top of Aria for another three miles, only pulling back when Luca confirmed they had lost the pursuit.
Dante hauled her up onto the seat, his hands frantically checking her face, her arms, her chest for blood. His breathing was heavy, his eyes wild with a terror she had never seen in him.

"I'm fine," Aria gasped, grabbing his trembling hands to steady him. "Dante, look at me. I'm untouched. I'm okay."
He pulled her into a crushing embrace, burying his face in her neck, his heart pounding violently against hers. The message was clear. Sterling wasn't waiting for the Sunday paper. He had escalated to a war of blood.
