Chapter 9: A Debt Never Forgotten

The ballroom fell silent.

Sophie looked from Emily to Adrian, completely confused.

"My father?"

Emily nodded, still staring at the document on her tablet.

"The records came from the company's historical archive."

Sophie shook her head.

"There has to be a mistake."

"My father wasn't a businessman."

"What did he do?" Adrian asked gently.

"He was a mechanic."

Several guests exchanged puzzled glances.

A mechanic?

How could a mechanic possibly have anything to do with Ashford Holdings?

Emily scrolled through the digital file.

"The incident occurred twenty-four years ago."

She looked up.

"Before Bennett Capital invested in Ashford Holdings."

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"I remember."

Emily continued.

"A severe traffic accident occurred during a winter storm on Interstate 47."

Sophie frowned.

"My father was in a car accident?"

"No."

Emily looked at Adrian.

"He stopped to help someone else."

The room grew quiet again.

Sophie closed her eyes, trying to remember.

She had only been two years old.

She remembered almost nothing about that time.

"My mother used to tell me Dad never drove past people who needed help."

A faint smile crossed her face.

"She said he believed strangers deserved kindness too."

Adrian remained silent.

He was remembering something else.

Something he had never forgotten.

Emily continued reading.

"According to the archived report, a black sedan slid off the highway during a snowstorm."

The guests listened carefully.

"The driver was trapped inside after the vehicle struck a guardrail."

"There were no emergency crews nearby because the roads had been closed."

She paused.

"A passing mechanic stopped his truck."

"He broke the driver's window."

"Pulled him to safety."

"And remained with him for nearly an hour until paramedics arrived."

Sophie whispered,

"That sounds like my father."

Emily nodded.

"The driver's name..."

She looked at Adrian.

"...was William Bennett."

The room collectively gasped.

Every eye turned toward Adrian.

Sophie looked confused.

"Who is William Bennett?"

For the first time all evening, Adrian's calm expression softened with emotion.

"He was my father."

The words settled over the ballroom.

Sophie stared at him.

"Your father?"

Adrian nodded.

"He never forgot the man who saved his life."

Adrian slowly walked toward one of the tall windows overlooking the estate gardens.

For several moments, he simply stood there.

Finally, he spoke.

"My father rarely talked about business."

He smiled faintly.

"But he often talked about that storm."

The guests listened quietly.

"He told me he believed he was going to die."

"He couldn't open the driver's door."

"The engine had caught fire."

"He said a stranger appeared through the snow carrying a tire iron."

Sophie felt tears gathering in her eyes.

"My father always kept one in his truck."

Adrian smiled.

"So the story was true."

"He broke the window."

"He ignored the flames."

"He pulled my father through broken glass."

Adrian looked down at his hands.

"When the ambulance arrived..."

"My father asked for his name."

Emily quietly finished the sentence.

"Daniel Carter."

Sophie covered her mouth.

That was her father's name.

Charlotte watched the exchange in disbelief.

"So..."

She forced a nervous laugh.

"That's why you're helping her?"

Adrian turned toward her.

"No."

He answered calmly.

"I helped her because it was the right thing to do."

He paused.

"Learning who her father was simply reminded me why."

Ethan stepped closer.

"I remember William telling that story."

Adrian nodded.

"He kept a photograph of Daniel Carter in his office."

Sophie looked surprised.

"My father never mentioned any of this."

"He wouldn't have."

Adrian smiled.

"My father offered him money."

"What happened?"

"He refused."

The guests murmured among themselves.

Emily found another page.

"According to the report..."

She read aloud.

"Daniel Carter said..."

She paused briefly.

"...'If my family were trapped in that car, I'd pray someone stopped to help them too.'"

Silence filled the ballroom.

Even Investigator Mitchell lowered her eyes.

Those simple words carried more weight than any business deal ever could.

Adrian continued.

"My father searched for Daniel several years later."

Sophie's heart skipped.

"You found him?"

"No."

"He had already moved."

Adrian's expression grew sad.

"My father never stopped looking."

"He always believed he owed him a debt."

Sophie wiped away a tear.

"He never told us."

"My father wouldn't have wanted recognition."

She smiled through her tears.

"He always said..."

"...kindness isn't a loan."

"It's a responsibility."

Adrian nodded slowly.

"He and my father would have gotten along."

Richard Collins suddenly cleared his throat.

"Mr. Bennett."

"Yes?"

"There was one more document."

Emily looked surprised.

"You found another one?"

Richard removed a faded envelope from one of the old archive folders.

"The date is twenty-three years ago."

Adrian carefully opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

The paper had yellowed with age.

He unfolded it carefully.

"It's from my father."

He quietly read the first few lines to himself.

Then he looked at Sophie.

"I think you should hear this."

The ballroom became completely silent.

Adrian began reading.

"If this letter ever reaches Daniel Carter, please know that I have never forgotten what you did for me. You saved my life when you owed me nothing. If there ever comes a day when your family needs mine, I hope someone carrying the Bennett name remembers the debt I could never repay."

Adrian's voice caught slightly.

He lowered the letter.

"My father wrote this..."

"...but he never found your family."

Sophie could no longer hold back her tears.

She wasn't crying because of the letter.

She was crying because, for the first time since losing both of her parents...

She felt as though a part of them had returned.

The ballroom remained silent until Ethan stepped forward.

He looked at Sophie.

"Your father saved a life."

He looked around the room.

"And tonight..."

He turned toward Adrian.

"...his kindness saved another."

Adrian smiled faintly.

"Not quite."

Everyone looked at him.

"Sophie saved herself."

He nodded toward the employees standing behind her.

"By finding the courage to endure."

"And by telling the truth."

He looked around the ballroom.

"She also gave every one of us the opportunity to choose what kind of people we wanted to be."

Several guests quietly nodded.

Even those who had remained silent earlier now understood the lesson.

Just then, Emily's tablet chimed once more.

She frowned as she read the latest message.

"Mr. Bennett..."

"What is it?"

She looked toward Richard Collins.

"The forensic accountants have finished tracing the missing money."

Charlotte's face immediately lost its remaining color.

Emily swallowed.

"They've identified every account."

She paused.

"And they discovered..."

"...Charlotte wasn't acting alone."

The ballroom erupted in shocked whispers.

Charlotte's eyes widened in horror.

Because she knew exactly whose name might appear next.

May you like

And if it did...

Everything would change once again.
