Chapter 10: The Final Betrayal

The whispers spread through the ballroom like a rising tide.
"She wasn't acting alone?"
"What does that mean?"
"Who else was involved?"
Charlotte's hands began to shake.
"No."
She stared at Emily.
"You're wrong."
Emily didn't respond immediately. Instead, she opened another encrypted report that had just arrived from Ashford Holdings' forensic accounting team.
"The investigators traced every transfer connected to the estate over the last three years."
She looked toward Adrian.
"They followed the money through twelve separate accounts."
Adrian nodded.
"And?"
Emily hesitated.
"Most of the transfers were authorized using Mrs. Ashford's estate credentials."
Charlotte quickly interrupted.
"I already admitted I made mistakes."
Emily continued.
"But several larger transfers required a second approval."
The room grew quiet.
Ethan frowned.
"My approval?"
Emily slowly shook her head.
"No."
"Then whose?"
She looked down at the report once more before answering.
"The approvals came from someone using the credentials of former Chief Financial Officer Victor Lang."
Richard Collins looked surprised.
"Victor retired eighteen months ago."
Emily nodded.
"According to the records..."
"...his credentials continued to be used long after his retirement."
Investigator Laura Mitchell stepped forward.
"Was Mr. Lang aware of this?"
"We don't know yet."
Laura immediately turned to one of the detectives.
"Locate Mr. Lang."
The detective nodded and stepped outside to make the call.
Charlotte finally found her voice.
"See?"
She pointed toward Emily.
"I told you this wasn't all my fault."
No one answered.
Charlotte looked around desperately.
"I wasn't the only one involved."
Adrian spoke calmly.
"No."
He met her eyes.
"But you were responsible for your own choices."
Charlotte's shoulders sagged.
She knew he was right.
Whether someone else had committed financial fraud or not...
Nothing excused what she had done to Sophie.
Across the ballroom, Sophie sat quietly while Margaret handed her a warm cup of tea.
"You should drink something."
"Thank you."
Margaret smiled.
"I've wanted to tell you something for years."
Sophie looked up.
"What is it?"
"I always admired you."
Sophie blinked.
"Me?"
Margaret nodded.
"You never became bitter."
Sophie laughed softly.
"There were days I came close."
"I know."
Margaret squeezed her hand.
"But every morning you still smiled at the rest of us."
"You shared your lunch when someone forgot theirs."
"You stayed late to help new employees."
"You even bought birthday cakes for staff members with your own money."
Sophie lowered her eyes.
"They were just small things."
Margaret shook her head.
"No."
"They reminded us we still mattered."
Nearby employees quietly nodded.
One young groundskeeper smiled.
"You paid for my bus ticket when my wallet was stolen."
Another housekeeper added,
"You covered my shift when my daughter was in the hospital."
Lily smiled through tears.
"You helped me practice for my college entrance interview."
Sophie looked embarrassed.
"I only did what anyone would do."
Adrian overheard her.
"No."
He smiled warmly.
"You did what a good person would do."
An hour later, another black sedan pulled into the estate.
Michael walked inside.
"Mr. Bennett."
"Yes?"
"The detective has returned."
Laura Mitchell stepped forward.
"What did you find?"
The detective removed a folder.
"We located Victor Lang."
"And?"
"He passed away eleven months ago."
A murmur spread across the ballroom.
Laura frowned.
"So he couldn't have approved any recent transactions."
"Correct."
She opened the folder.
"But his daughter provided something important."
He handed the documents to Laura.
She read silently for nearly a minute.
Then looked up.
"Mr. Bennett."
Adrian walked over.
Laura handed him the file.
Inside were copies of emails.
Bank statements.
And one signed affidavit.
Adrian's expression hardened as he read.
Ethan stepped beside him.
"What is it?"
Adrian slowly closed the folder.
"Victor discovered someone had copied his executive credentials shortly before he retired."
Ethan frowned.
"Did he report it?"
"Yes."
Richard looked shocked.
"I never received that report."
Laura answered quietly.
"Because it disappeared."
The room became silent.
Charlotte looked increasingly nervous.
"What does any of this have to do with me?"
Laura faced her.
"That remains under investigation."
Charlotte exhaled in relief.
But it lasted only a moment.
Laura continued.
"However..."
"The affidavit names one person Victor believed had access to those credentials."
Charlotte's face froze.
Laura didn't look at the paper.
She already knew the name.
"It identifies Gregory Pierce."
Richard's eyes widened.
"The estate administrator before Charlotte."
Emily nodded.
"He resigned suddenly two years ago."
Laura looked toward Ethan.
"Mr. Pierce is currently living overseas."
Ethan folded his arms.
"So Charlotte wasn't working alone."
"No."
Laura replied carefully.
"But there's something else."
She turned another page.
"The affidavit states that after Gregory Pierce resigned..."
"...someone inside the estate continued using the same system."
Charlotte closed her eyes.
She knew exactly where this was going.
Laura looked directly at her.
"The only person with uninterrupted administrative access after Mr. Pierce left..."
"...was you."
Charlotte's last hope disappeared.
She slowly walked toward Sophie.
The entire ballroom watched.
Charlotte stopped a few feet away.
For several long moments...
She couldn't speak.
Finally, her voice broke.
"I hated you."
Sophie looked confused.
"What?"
Charlotte wiped away a tear.
"I hated how everyone liked you."
The room remained perfectly still.
"You were kind..."
"...even when I wasn't."
"You thanked people."
"You remembered birthdays."
"My guests complimented you."
Charlotte laughed bitterly.
"And every compliment they gave you..."
"...felt like criticism of me."
Sophie stared at her in disbelief.
"I never wanted your life."
"I know that now."
Charlotte's shoulders slumped.
"I thought respect had to be demanded."
She looked around the ballroom.
"I never realized..."
"...it had to be earned."
Tears rolled freely down her face.
For the first time all evening...
There was no anger.
No arrogance.
Only regret.
Sophie remained silent.
She looked at the woman who had made her life miserable for years.
The room waited.
Would she yell?
Would she seek revenge?
Instead, Sophie quietly stood.
She looked Charlotte in the eyes.
"I forgive you."
The words stunned everyone.
Charlotte blinked.
"What?"
"I forgive you."
Charlotte began crying harder.
"After everything I did?"
Sophie nodded slowly.
"I forgive you..."
"...because I don't want to carry this pain for the rest of my life."
She paused.
"But forgiveness..."
Her voice remained gentle.
"...doesn't erase consequences."
Charlotte lowered her head.
"I understand."
Investigator Mitchell nodded respectfully.
"So do we."
She stepped forward.
"Mrs. Charlotte Ashford."
Charlotte looked up.
"You are not under arrest tonight."
Charlotte blinked in surprise.
"However..."
Laura continued.
"You will be formally notified regarding the ongoing investigations into workplace abuse and financial misconduct."
Charlotte nodded weakly.
"I'll cooperate."
"I hope you will."
As the investigators prepared to leave, Adrian quietly looked around the ballroom.
The fear that had filled the room earlier had disappeared.
Employees stood together.
Guests spoke openly.
Ethan had accepted responsibility.
Charlotte had finally admitted the truth.
Justice, though incomplete, had begun.
Emily's phone vibrated one final time.
She smiled for the first time that evening.
"Mr. Bennett."
"What is it?"
"The board has reached a unanimous decision."
Adrian took the tablet.
He read the message.
Then looked toward Ethan.
"It appears the board has already chosen the future of Ashford Holdings."
Ethan studied Adrian's expression.
"What decision?"
Adrian folded the tablet closed.
"They want to announce it tomorrow morning..."
May you like
He glanced toward Sophie.
"...and it will change more than one person's life forever."
