Chapter 6: Sophie's Story

Charlotte stood frozen.
The hope that had briefly returned to her face disappeared just as quickly.
"My husband... wants to apologize to her?"
She looked at Emily as though she had misheard.
"That's impossible."
Emily lowered the tablet.
"Those were Mr. Ashford's exact words."
Charlotte shook her head repeatedly.
"No. Ethan would never embarrass me in public."
Adrian corrected her.
"He isn't embarrassing you."
He glanced toward Sophie.
"He's trying to do the right thing."
Charlotte looked away, unable to respond.
For the first time that evening, she realized she was no longer controlling the narrative.
The ballroom had changed completely.
An hour earlier, guests had been sipping champagne and laughing over expensive hors d'oeuvres.
Now the orchestra sat silently in one corner, their instruments untouched.
The waitstaff gathered near the kitchen entrance, whispering quietly among themselves.
Several of them stole glances at Sophie.
Not with pity.
With admiration.
One young server finally gathered enough courage to approach her.
"Miss Carter?"
Sophie looked up.
"Yes?"
The young woman smiled nervously.
"I just wanted to say..."
She hesitated.
"I'm sorry."
Sophie frowned.
"For what?"
"We all saw how she treated you."
The young server looked around before lowering her voice.
"We should've helped."
Sophie gave her a gentle smile.
"You were afraid."
"So were you."
"I've been afraid for a long time."
The server's eyes filled with tears.
"So have we."
Those four words carried more weight than anyone else in the room realized.
Because Sophie suddenly understood something.
She hadn't been the only victim.
She had simply been the one standing closest when Charlotte lost control.
Adrian noticed the exchange.
He quietly walked over.
"May I speak with you?"
Sophie stood immediately.
"You don't have to stand."
She hesitated before sitting back down.
Adrian pulled out a nearby chair and sat across from her.
The conversation between them felt strangely private, despite the dozens of people watching from a distance.
"What brought you here?" Adrian asked.
"To the estate?"
He nodded.
Sophie took a slow breath.
"My father passed away when I was nineteen."
"I'm sorry."
"My mother died two years later."
She folded her hands together.
"After that, it was just me and my little brother."
"Ethan."
She looked surprised.
"You know his name?"
"The medical insurance records."
Emily had quietly shared the information while reviewing Sophie's employment file.
Sophie nodded.
"He was sixteen when he got sick."
"What happened?"
"Kidney failure."
Several nearby guests quietly stopped talking so they could listen.
"He needed treatment three times a week."
Her voice remained calm, but the emotion behind it was unmistakable.
"The hospital bills kept growing."
"I sold my car."
She smiled sadly.
"Then my jewelry."
"Our parents' furniture."
"Anything worth selling."
She looked down at her hands.
"But it still wasn't enough."
"So you took this job."
Sophie nodded.
"It came with health insurance."
Adrian didn't interrupt.
She continued.
"I promised Ethan that no matter what happened..."
"...he would finish school."
She laughed softly.
"I told him I'd found the perfect job."
"You never told him the truth?"
She slowly shook her head.
"He thinks I work for kind people."
Across the ballroom, several guests quietly wiped away tears.
Even people who had ignored Sophie earlier now couldn't look away.
Charlotte stared silently from the opposite side of the room.
She had known Sophie worked hard.
She had never bothered to ask why.
Adrian leaned back slightly.
"Did Charlotte treat you this way often?"
Sophie hesitated.
"I don't want to make things worse."
"They're already worse."
She looked toward the marble floor.
"There were days she ignored me."
She smiled faintly.
"Those were the good days."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"And the bad ones?"
"If a room wasn't perfect..."
"She yelled."
"If dinner wasn't exactly how she wanted..."
"She blamed whoever was closest."
"If guests complimented the staff..."
"She said we were trying to make her look bad."
A painful silence settled over the room.
"Did she ever hit you before tonight?" Adrian asked quietly.
Sophie didn't answer.
She didn't need to.
The hesitation was enough.
Adrian lowered his voice.
"How many times?"
Sophie looked at him.
"I stopped counting."
The words struck the ballroom harder than any shout could have.
One of the older housekeepers began crying openly.
"I knew," she whispered.
"I knew."
Another employee slowly stepped forward.
"So did I."
Then another.
"And me."
Within seconds, six members of the household staff stood together behind Sophie.
No one had planned it.
They simply refused to let her stand alone anymore.
Michael Harris, the head of security, looked at Adrian.
"Sir..."
"Yes?"
"I owe Miss Carter an apology."
Sophie turned toward him.
"There were complaints."
Michael lowered his head.
"I received reports from employees."
He swallowed hard.
"I should've investigated."
"Why didn't you?"
He looked embarrassed.
"I was told they were misunderstandings."
Charlotte closed her eyes.
She knew exactly who had given those orders.
Emily's phone vibrated again.
She checked the screen.
"Mr. Bennett."
"What is it?"
"The legal department has finished reviewing employee complaints."
"How many?"
Emily looked up slowly.
"There weren't just a few."
She took a deep breath.
"There were twenty-three."
A collective gasp swept through the room.
"Twenty-three formal complaints."
"Over three years."
"Most were marked..."
She paused.
"...resolved without investigation."
Michael's jaw tightened.
"Someone buried them."
Emily nodded.
"It appears so."
Every eye in the ballroom turned toward Charlotte.
She looked as though she wanted the floor to open beneath her.
"I..."
She couldn't finish the sentence.
Just then, the sound of tires crunching against the gravel driveway echoed outside.
Headlights shone through the tall ballroom windows.
Another black luxury sedan had arrived.
Michael glanced toward the entrance.
"That should be Mr. Ashford."
The massive front doors slowly opened.
A tall man in his late forties stepped inside, still wearing the navy suit he had traveled in.
His tie was loosened.
His face looked exhausted.
The moment he entered, his eyes searched the ballroom.
They found Sophie first.
Then the bandage on her cheek.
Then the dried blood on the marble floor.
He closed his eyes for a brief moment.
As if trying to process what he was seeing.
When he opened them again, he didn't walk toward his wife.
He walked directly toward Sophie.
Charlotte's voice trembled.
"Ethan..."
He didn't even look at her.
Stopping in front of Sophie, he slowly bowed his head.
"I'm Ethan Ashford."
His voice was heavy with regret.
"And before I say another word tonight..."
He took a deep breath.
"...I owe you an apology that should have come years ago."
May you like
The entire ballroom watched in stunned silence.
Because the CEO of Ashford Holdings had just bowed to the maid everyone else had ignored.
