Chapter 4: The Security Footage

Charlotte refused to believe she was losing control.
"There will be no board meeting."
Her voice echoed across the ballroom, louder than before, as if volume alone could restore her authority.
"This is my event. My guests. My home."
No one applauded.
No one even nodded.
The guests who had eagerly praised her throughout the evening now stood in uneasy silence, avoiding eye contact. A few quietly stepped farther away, unwilling to be associated with what had unfolded.
Adrian Bennett watched her calmly.
"You're still thinking like someone who believes this evening is about spilled wine."
Charlotte folded her arms.
"Isn't it?"
"No."
He glanced toward Sophie, who was now sitting in a nearby chair while the doctor carefully cleaned the cut on her cheek.
"It's about abuse."
Those two words seemed to settle over the ballroom like a storm cloud.
Charlotte forced a smile.
"You're overreacting. Every employer gets frustrated once in a while."
The doctor looked up.
"Frustration doesn't leave fingerprints."
Everyone turned toward him.
"What do you mean?" Adrian asked.
The doctor gently tilted Sophie's face toward the light.
A faint red outline had already begun to appear on her left cheek.
"The swelling matches the shape of a hand."
He looked directly at Charlotte.
"This wasn't caused by falling."
Charlotte's stomach tightened.
"It doesn't prove anything."
"No," Adrian agreed. "But I suspect something else will."
He turned toward the head of security.
"What is your name?"
"Michael Harris, sir."
"Mr. Harris, does this ballroom have surveillance cameras?"
The security chief hesitated.
"Yes, sir."
Charlotte immediately interrupted.
"They're for security purposes only."
Adrian looked at her.
"Excellent."
He turned back to Michael.
"Please retrieve the footage from the last thirty minutes."
Charlotte's confidence vanished.
"That's private property."
Michael didn't move.
He looked at Charlotte.
Then at Adrian.
Finally, he took a slow breath.
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Ashford."
Without another word, he removed a security keycard from his belt.
Charlotte stared at him.
"What are you doing?"
"I'm following the instructions of the company's controlling shareholder."
"You work for my husband!"
"I work for Ashford Holdings."
His answer was polite.
But final.
Charlotte took a step toward him.
"If you walk out that door, you're fired."
Michael lowered his head respectfully.
"You no longer have the authority to terminate employees."
The words struck Charlotte harder than any slap.
She watched helplessly as Michael disappeared into the security office.
For the first time in years...
Someone had told her no.
Sophie sat quietly while the nurse finished placing a small bandage across her cheek.
"Does it hurt?" the nurse asked gently.
"A little."
The nurse smiled kindly.
"It will heal."
Sophie nodded.
She wasn't talking about the cut.
She was thinking about everything else.
Three years.
Three years of working in the mansion.
Three years of insults.
Three years of pretending she didn't hear Charlotte calling her "invisible" whenever guests visited.
She had convinced herself it was simply part of the job.
Tonight had proven otherwise.
The nurse handed her a bottle of water.
"You've been carrying this alone for a long time, haven't you?"
Sophie looked down.
"I needed the paycheck."
The nurse understood immediately.
"So you stayed."
"I didn't have a choice."
Adrian overheard the conversation but said nothing.
His expression grew even more thoughtful.
Across the ballroom, Charlotte pulled out her phone.
She dialed her husband.
Straight to voicemail.
She tried again.
Nothing.
Her breathing became faster.
She called his assistant.
No answer.
She dialed another executive.
The call was declined.
One by one...
Every person she expected to rescue her became unreachable.
Emily, Adrian's executive assistant, quietly looked up from her tablet.
"The board meeting begins in five minutes."
Charlotte glared at her.
"You planned this."
Emily shook her head.
"No."
She looked toward Sophie.
"You did."
Charlotte frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"It means every decision has consequences."
The ballroom doors opened again.
Michael returned carrying a silver laptop.
Behind him walked two additional members of the security department.
One of them held a portable monitor.
The equipment was placed on a long banquet table where everyone could see it.
Michael connected several cables.
Within seconds, the security camera footage appeared on the screen.
The timestamp showed exactly twenty-three minutes earlier.
Guests instinctively moved closer.
No one spoke.
The video began.
There was Sophie carrying the silver tray.
There were the two guests who stepped into her path.
The bottle slipped.
It shattered.
Charlotte crossed her arms triumphantly.
"See?"
"No one disputed that," Adrian replied.
The video continued.
Everyone watched in complete silence.
Charlotte stormed across the ballroom.
She pointed at Sophie.
The audio wasn't recorded, but every movement was crystal clear.
Sophie apologized repeatedly.
Charlotte stepped closer.
Then—
The footage showed Charlotte shoving Sophie with both hands.
A loud gasp swept through the ballroom.
Sophie stumbled backward exactly as the doctor had described.
She fell onto the broken glass.
Blood appeared almost instantly.
Charlotte's face turned pale.
"No..."
The video wasn't finished.
It showed Sophie struggling to stand.
Charlotte pointed toward the floor.
Again.
And again.
Demanding she stay down.
Several guests who had witnessed the scene lowered their heads in shame.
Then came the final moment.
The slap.
Clear.
Deliberate.
Impossible to deny.
The sound hadn't been recorded.
It didn't need to be.
Everyone saw Charlotte's hand strike Sophie's face.
The room fell completely silent.
Michael slowly closed the laptop.
"No edits," he said quietly.
"No cuts."
"The original recording."
Charlotte felt her knees weaken.
She looked around desperately.
No one defended her.
Not one person.
Even her closest friends had quietly moved toward the opposite side of the ballroom.
Adrian folded his hands behind his back.
"I asked for the footage because truth has a way of surviving even when people refuse to speak."
Charlotte swallowed hard.
"It... it wasn't supposed to look like that."
Sophie looked up.
Those words hurt almost as much as the slap.
Not because Charlotte admitted what she'd done.
But because she hadn't apologized.
She only regretted being caught.
At that moment, Emily's tablet chimed.
She glanced at the screen before looking at Adrian.
"The board meeting has officially begun."
Adrian nodded once.
"Good."
Emily hesitated.
"There's one more thing."
"What is it?"
She turned the tablet so only Adrian could see the message.
His expression remained calm.
But his eyes sharpened.
"The chairman of the audit committee says they've uncovered something unexpected."
Adrian looked at Charlotte.
"I believe tonight's discussion is no longer just about how you treated an employee."
Charlotte's heart nearly stopped.
"What are you talking about?"
Adrian's voice was steady.
"It appears the investigation has uncovered financial records connected to this estate."
He paused.
"And your name appears throughout them."
Charlotte's face lost every trace of color.
Because she knew exactly what those records might reveal.

And if Adrian had found them...
Everything she had spent years hiding was about to come into the light.
