Chapter 8: The Truth Comes to Light

Charlotte gripped the edge of a marble table to keep herself from collapsing.

"A criminal investigation?"

Her voice was barely audible.

"There has to be some misunderstanding."

Richard Collins slowly lowered his phone.

"I'm afraid there isn't."

He looked toward Adrian and Ethan before continuing.

"The prosecutor's office reviewed the surveillance footage that was forwarded by the legal department."

Charlotte's eyes widened.

"You sent them the video?"

Ethan answered quietly.

"I did."

Charlotte stared at her husband in disbelief.

"You reported your own wife?"

"I reported what happened."

"You could have handled this privately!"

Ethan shook his head.

"People with influence don't get a different version of justice."

The words echoed through the ballroom.

Several guests who had remained silent all evening lowered their heads in embarrassment.

For years, many of them had looked the other way whenever Charlotte mocked an employee.

Tonight, they realized that their silence had helped create the very situation unfolding before them.

Outside the mansion, the sound of several vehicles approached.

Blue and red lights briefly reflected through the tall ballroom windows.

Guests instinctively turned toward the entrance.

Within moments, two investigators from the county prosecutor's office entered, accompanied by uniformed police officers.

The room grew even quieter.

Leading the group was Investigator Laura Mitchell, a woman in her early forties with a calm, professional demeanor.

She carried a leather portfolio under one arm.

"Good evening."

Her voice was polite but firm.

"I'm Investigator Laura Mitchell."

She looked toward Adrian.

"Mr. Bennett."

Adrian nodded.

"Thank you for coming so quickly."

She turned toward Ethan.

"Mr. Ashford."

He extended his hand.

"Thank you."

Laura accepted the handshake before looking around the ballroom.

"I understand there are more than one hundred witnesses present."

"There are," Ethan replied.

She glanced toward Sophie.

"And the injured employee?"

The doctor stepped forward.

"She's been treated for facial lacerations and soft tissue injuries. I've documented everything."

Laura nodded.

"Thank you, Doctor."

Then she walked toward Sophie.

Her voice softened.

"Miss Carter."

Sophie stood nervously.

"You don't need to be afraid."

"I've never spoken to investigators before."

Laura offered a reassuring smile.

"Tonight, you're simply going to tell the truth."

Across the ballroom, Charlotte's attorney finally arrived.

A sharply dressed man hurried inside carrying a briefcase.

"Charlotte!"

He quickly approached her.

"I'm David Lawson."

He lowered his voice.

"Don't answer any questions."

Charlotte grabbed his arm.

"Finally."

She pointed toward Adrian.

"This entire thing has gotten completely out of control."

David turned toward Adrian.

"Mr. Bennett."

Adrian acknowledged him with a brief nod.

"I'm advising my client not to make any further statements."

"That's your responsibility."

David seemed relieved by Adrian's calm response.

Then Investigator Mitchell spoke.

"Mr. Lawson."

He turned.

"I'm advising you that this is currently an active criminal inquiry."

David's expression became more serious.

"I understand."

Laura opened her portfolio.

"We'll begin with the surveillance footage."

Michael Harris immediately handed over a secured copy.

She reviewed several minutes in silence.

No one spoke.

Finally, she closed the tablet.

"The recording appears unedited."

"It is," Michael confirmed.

She nodded.

"We'll verify that independently."

Then she looked toward the assembled guests.

"I'll also need witness statements."

An uneasy murmur spread through the ballroom.

One guest quietly whispered,

"I don't want to get involved."

Another executive sighed.

"We have no choice."

Laura heard him.

"No."

She looked around the room.

"You have a choice."

She paused.

"You can tell the truth."

The words carried through the ballroom with quiet authority.

One by one...

Guests stepped forward.

The first was an elderly judge.

"I witnessed Mrs. Ashford push Miss Carter."

Then a retired teacher.

"I heard Miss Carter apologize several times."

Then a business executive.

"I saw the slap."

Then another.

"And another."

Within thirty minutes, more than forty witness statements had been collected.

Remarkably...

Every single one confirmed the same sequence of events.

Charlotte listened in stunned silence.

Not one person lied for her.

Not one person attempted to protect her.

The influence she had spent years cultivating vanished in less than an hour.

While investigators continued their work, Adrian quietly approached Sophie.

"How are you holding up?"

She managed a faint smile.

"I don't think I've processed any of this."

"I wouldn't expect you to."

She looked around the ballroom.

"Everything feels different."

Adrian followed her gaze.

The same marble floor.

The same chandeliers.

The same guests.

Yet the atmosphere had completely changed.

Sophie looked back at him.

"Why did you come here tonight?"

Adrian smiled slightly.

"I was originally scheduled to meet Ethan tomorrow morning."

"So tonight was a coincidence?"

He nodded.

"I stopped by because my flight arrived early."

She looked down.

"If your flight had been delayed..."

Neither of them finished the sentence.

Both knew exactly what would have happened.

Sophie would have cleaned the floor.

Apologized again.

Gone home in tears.

And no one would have questioned what happened.

Meanwhile, Ethan stood alone near one of the ballroom windows.

Richard Collins joined him.

"You look exhausted."

"I am."

Richard hesitated.

"Did you really have no idea?"

Ethan remained silent for several seconds.

"I knew Charlotte could be demanding."

He stared out at the dark gardens.

"I convinced myself the complaints were exaggerated."

Richard nodded sadly.

"That's easier than believing someone you love is hurting people."

Ethan closed his eyes.

"I failed them."

He looked toward the employees gathered around Sophie.

"All of them."

An hour later, Investigator Mitchell closed her notebook.

She walked toward Adrian and Ethan.

"We've completed the initial interviews."

"And?" Adrian asked.

Laura spoke carefully.

"The evidence strongly supports repeated workplace abuse."

Charlotte closed her eyes.

Laura continued.

"We're also opening a separate investigation into the financial records provided by Ashford Holdings."

Charlotte's attorney quietly whispered,

"Don't say anything."

She nodded weakly.

Laura looked toward Sophie once more.

"Miss Carter."

"Yes?"

"I know tonight has been overwhelming."

Sophie nodded.

"It has."

Laura smiled gently.

"But because you found the courage to tell the truth..."

She glanced toward the other employees.

"...others found the courage to do the same."

Sophie looked behind her.

Margaret.

Lily.

Michael.

Nearly every member of the household staff now stood together.

Not out of fear.

But in solidarity.

For the first time in years...

They felt seen.

They felt heard.

They felt valued.

As investigators prepared to leave with the evidence, Emily's phone vibrated once again.

She answered immediately.

After listening for a few moments, she looked toward Adrian with a surprised expression.

"Sir..."

"What is it?"

"The board has completed another review."

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

"So quickly?"

Emily nodded.

"They uncovered something unexpected in the company's historical archives."

She lowered her voice.

"It concerns Sophie."

Sophie looked up, confused.

"Me?"

Emily slowly nodded.

"According to records from nearly twenty-five years ago..."

She paused, making sure she had read the document correctly.

"...your late father once saved the life of someone very important to this company."

The room fell silent.

May you like

Adrian's expression changed for the first time that night.

Because he already suspected exactly whose name was written in that forgotten file.
