Chapter 1: The Blood on the Marble Floor

The first thing Sophie Carter noticed wasn't the shattered crystal wineglass.

It was the silence.

Just seconds earlier, the grand ballroom of the Ashford Estate had been alive with music, laughter, and the soft clinking of champagne flutes. More than a hundred distinguished guests wandered beneath glittering crystal chandeliers, celebrating the engagement of Charlotte Ashford, one of the city's most recognizable socialites. Every detail of the evening had been carefully planned, from the white orchids imported from Singapore to the polished Italian marble floor that reflected the golden light like a mirror.

Sophie had spent the entire day helping prepare for the event.

At twenty-six, she had worked as a housemaid at the estate for nearly three years. The pay wasn't great, but it covered the rent for the small apartment she shared with her younger brother, Ethan, who was attending community college while recovering from a serious illness. Every paycheck mattered. Losing this job wasn't an option.

She balanced a silver tray carrying expensive bottles of red wine as she carefully moved through the crowded ballroom.

"Watch where you're going," another server whispered as two guests unexpectedly stepped into her path.

Sophie tried to avoid them.

Her shoe caught the edge of an ornate Persian rug.

The tray tilted.

One bottle slipped from her grasp.

Time seemed to slow.

The crystal bottle struck the marble floor with a deafening crack, sending deep red wine across the gleaming white surface like a spreading stain. Broken glass scattered in every direction.

The orchestra stopped playing.

Every conversation came to an abrupt end.

More than a hundred pairs of eyes turned toward Sophie.

Her heart dropped.

"I'm... I'm so sorry," she whispered, already reaching for a towel.

Before she could bend down, a sharp voice echoed across the ballroom.

"Sophie!"

Charlotte Ashford marched toward her in a sparkling designer gown worth more than Sophie earned in a year. Diamond earrings shimmered beneath perfectly styled blonde hair, and her expression burned with fury.

"What have you done?"

"I'm sorry, Ms. Ashford. It was an accident."

"An accident?" Charlotte laughed coldly, loud enough for everyone to hear. "Do you have any idea how much that bottle cost?"

"I'll work extra hours. I'll pay for it somehow."

Charlotte stepped closer.

"You?" she scoffed. "You couldn't afford the cork."

A few guests exchanged uncomfortable glances.

Others quietly looked away.

No one spoke.

Charlotte folded her arms.

"I should have known better than to trust someone like you."

Sophie's cheeks flushed with embarrassment.

"I'm really sorry."

"No."

Charlotte's voice became even louder.

"You're careless. Clumsy. And completely ungrateful."

Each word felt like another slap.

Sophie lowered her eyes, hoping the humiliation would end.

Instead, Charlotte took another step forward.

"I spent months planning tonight."

"I'm sorry."

"Sorry doesn't clean imported marble."

Charlotte suddenly shoved Sophie hard against the shoulder.

The unexpected force sent her stumbling backward.

Her foot landed on a shard of broken crystal.

She lost her balance.

Her knees slammed into the marble floor.

A sharp piece of glass sliced across her cheek as she fell.

Pain shot through her face.

A thin stream of blood trickled onto the polished white marble, mixing with the spilled wine until it became impossible to tell where one ended and the other began.

A shocked gasp rippled through the room.

Sophie instinctively raised a trembling hand to her face.

When she pulled it away, her fingers were covered in blood.

Charlotte didn't show the slightest concern.

"If you're going to make a mess," she said coldly, "clean it up."

Sophie blinked back tears.

"Please..."

Charlotte pointed toward the floor.

"Get on your knees."

Sophie looked around the ballroom.

Executives.

Politicians.

Judges.

Celebrities.

Not one person moved.

Not one person objected.

Every second that passed made the silence even heavier.

"I said kneel."

Already on her knees from the fall, Sophie slowly lowered her head.

"I'm sorry."

"Louder."

"I'm sorry."

"I can't hear you."

Her voice cracked.

"I'm sorry, Ms. Ashford."

Charlotte smiled with cruel satisfaction.

"Now apologize to every guest for ruining my evening."

Sophie's entire body trembled.

"I... I'm sorry, everyone."

Some guests looked ashamed.

Others simply watched as if the scene were entertainment.

One older waitress quietly wiped away tears but didn't dare interfere.

Sophie felt smaller than she ever had in her life.

Maybe this was simply how the world worked.

People with money made the rules.

People like her obeyed them.

Charlotte leaned closer.

"You should be grateful I don't fire you tonight."

Then, without warning—

She slapped Sophie across the face.

The sound echoed through the ballroom.

Sophie's head snapped sideways.

Fresh blood dripped onto the marble.

Several guests gasped.

One man muttered, "That's enough."

But he never stepped forward.

Charlotte adjusted the diamond bracelet on her wrist as though nothing had happened.

"I want every inch of this floor spotless before anyone leaves."

At that exact moment—

The massive front doors of the mansion slowly opened.

A tall man in a dark tailored suit stepped inside.

He looked to be in his early forties, calm and composed, with streaks of silver beginning to show at his temples. His presence was quiet, yet every member of the security team immediately straightened.

The room fell silent once again.

The stranger's eyes swept across the ballroom.

They landed on the shattered glass.

The spilled wine.

The frightened maid kneeling on the floor.

Then they stopped on the blood running down Sophie's face.

His expression changed.

It wasn't anger.

It was something far more dangerous.

A cold, controlled resolve.

Without saying a word, he took one deliberate step toward Sophie.

And the entire room seemed to hold its breath.
