Chapter 6 – Project Legacy

Marcus barely slept.

The faded photograph of Isabella standing outside the courthouse twelve years earlier kept replaying in his mind. He had spent the entire night asking himself the same question.

Why had she been there?

It couldn't have been a coincidence.

Too many pieces were beginning to fit together.

The corporate scandal involving his father.

Isabella's mysterious disappearance from public life.

Her calculated entrance into Marcus's social circle years later.

And now, an attack on his pregnant wife.

Someone had been playing a very long game.

Early the next morning, Samuel Grant arrived at Marcus's office carrying another file.

"I think we found the man connected to Project Legacy."

Marcus looked up immediately.

"Who is he?"

Samuel placed a photograph on the desk.

The man appeared to be in his late sixties, with neatly combed gray hair and sharp blue eyes.

His name was Victor Langford.

Marcus frowned.

"I've never met him."

"No," Samuel replied. "But your father did."

He opened the file.

"Langford was once one of Adrian Thorne's closest business partners."

Marcus remembered hearing the name only once as a child.

His father had refused to discuss it.

"What happened between them?"

Samuel slid another document across the desk.

"They built an investment company together nearly thirty years ago."

"Then everything fell apart."

"Langford accused Adrian of stealing control of the company."

Marcus studied the report.

"And?"

"The courts ruled in Adrian's favor."

"So my father was innocent."

Samuel nodded.

"Legally, yes."

"But Langford never accepted the verdict."

Marcus leaned back in his chair.

"You think he's been planning revenge ever since."

Samuel met his eyes.

"I think revenge became his life's work."

Across town, Dr. Nathan Carter was reviewing Khloe's latest ultrasound.

The baby's heartbeat was strong.

The bruising around Khloe's ribs had begun to fade.

For the first time since the attack, he allowed himself to relax.

Khloe smiled as he entered.

"Good news?"

"The best."

He held up the ultrasound image.

"Your little one is doing exactly what we want."

Khloe's eyes filled with relief.

Nathan pulled up a chair.

"There's something else."

"What is it?"

"I've approved your discharge tomorrow."

Khloe laughed softly.

"I've never been so happy to hear the word 'discharge.'"

Nathan smiled.

"But you'll be on bed rest for at least two weeks."

"I know."

"No stress."

She raised an eyebrow.

"I'm married to Marcus Thorne."

Nathan chuckled.

"Then tell him the doctor ordered him to cancel every meeting."

"I'm not sure that's medically possible."

"It is now."

Both of them laughed.

It was the first genuine laugh Khloe had shared since the attack.

Meanwhile, Isabella's world continued to unravel.

She sat across from Richard Lawson in a small consultation room inside the detention center.

Richard looked more serious than ever.

"The prosecutor offered a deal."

Isabella looked hopeful.

"What kind of deal?"

"If you cooperate with the investigation..."

"They'll consider reducing the charges."

She frowned.

"Cooperate how?"

Richard opened a folder.

"They believe someone encouraged you."

"No."

"They think the attack wasn't entirely your idea."

Isabella's face went pale.

"I acted alone."

Richard watched her carefully.

"Did you?"

Silence.

"You need to tell me the truth."

"I am."

He leaned closer.

"If you're protecting someone, prison won't protect you."

For several long seconds, Isabella stared at the table.

Finally she whispered,

"I can't."

Richard's expression changed.

"Can't?"

She slowly shook her head.

"If I talk..."

"They'll destroy me."

Richard realized something important.

Someone terrified Isabella even more than prison.

That evening, Marcus drove to his childhood home.

The sprawling estate had remained untouched since Adrian Thorne retired.

His father was waiting in the library.

Adrian looked older than Marcus remembered, but his eyes remained sharp.

"You found the photograph."

Marcus stopped.

"You knew."

Adrian sighed.

"I hoped you never would."

Marcus placed the picture on the table.

"Who is Victor Langford?"

His father remained silent for several moments.

Then he answered.

"He was my best friend."

Marcus blinked.

"What?"

"We built everything together."

"What happened?"

Adrian stared into the fireplace.

"He lost his wife and daughter in a car accident."

Marcus's expression softened.

"I'm sorry."

"So was I."

Adrian nodded slowly.

"But grief changed him."

"He blamed me."

"For what?"

"The accident happened after a late-night board meeting."

"I insisted we stay longer."

"If we'd left earlier..."

He stopped speaking.

Marcus quietly finished the sentence.

"...they might have lived."

Adrian nodded.

"Victor believed I stole not only his company..."

"...but his family."

Marcus looked at the old newspaper clipping again.

"And Isabella?"

Adrian's face darkened.

"Victor took her in after she aged out of foster care."

Marcus froze.

"She was raised by him?"

"Yes."

Adrian looked directly at his son.

"If Victor wanted revenge..."

"He wouldn't attack me."

"He'd attack what I loved most."

Marcus suddenly understood.

Khloe.

The baby.

The marriage.

None of it had been random.

It had all been carefully chosen.

Years in advance.

Just then, Marcus's phone vibrated.

It was Samuel.

His voice was urgent.

"We found Victor Langford."

Marcus stood instantly.

"Where?"

Samuel hesitated.

"At a private airfield."

"He's preparing to leave the country."

Marcus's heart pounded.

"Don't let him leave."

"We're trying."

"But there's one more thing."

"What?"

Samuel's voice grew quiet.

"He's not alone."

Marcus gripped the phone tighter.

"Who's with him?"

Samuel answered with a single sentence.

"Someone inside your own company has been helping him all along."

The line went silent.

Marcus stared into the darkness outside the library windows.

The enemy wasn't just outside the Thorne family.

He was already inside.
