Chapter 1 – The First Lie

Marcus Thorne didn't move.
For several long seconds, he simply stared at the scene unfolding inside the private hospital suite.
His wife lay curled on the polished marble floor, both hands wrapped protectively around her swollen stomach. Her breathing came in short, painful gasps, and tiny pieces of broken crystal glittered around her like frozen ice.
Across the room, Isabella Rossi wiped a tear from her cheek.
She looked frightened.
Too frightened.
Marcus had spent years negotiating billion-dollar mergers. He knew exactly what rehearsed emotions looked like.
"Marcus..." Isabella whispered, taking one careful step toward him. "She lost control. I tried to calm her down."
Khloe struggled to lift her head.
"Don't..."
The single word barely escaped her lips before another wave of pain swept through her body.
Elaine Parker rushed past Marcus and dropped to her knees beside Khloe.
"Oh my God."
Her hands trembled as she reached for Khloe's wrist.
"Call the emergency team!" she shouted into the hallway.
Within seconds, nurses came running.
One of them immediately noticed the faint red stain spreading across the side of Khloe's white maternity gown.
Blood.
The room instantly erupted into controlled chaos.
A doctor pushed a portable stretcher inside while another nurse checked the baby's heartbeat with a handheld monitor.
Everyone held their breath.
The first soft heartbeat echoed through the room.
Strong.
Steady.
Khloe closed her eyes in relief.
Marcus finally knelt beside her.
"I'm here," he whispered.
She reached weakly for his hand.
"I didn't..."
"I know."
He squeezed her fingers gently.
"You don't have to explain anything."
Those words made Isabella's stomach tighten.
This wasn't supposed to happen.
Marcus was supposed to question his wife.
He was supposed to believe her tears.
Instead, he hadn't even looked at Isabella since entering the room.
As the doctors carefully lifted Khloe onto the stretcher, another voice echoed from the hallway.
"What happened to my niece?"
A tall man in his early sixties strode into the suite wearing a dark navy suit beneath an open white lab coat.
His silver hair was neatly combed, but the fury in his eyes stopped everyone in the room.
Dr. Nathan Carter.
Chief of Medicine.
Head of the hospital.
More importantly...
Khloe's uncle.
The moment he saw Khloe's condition, his face went pale.
"Nathan..." Marcus began.
Dr. Carter ignored him.
He examined Khloe himself before turning toward the medical team.
"Get her to Maternal Intensive Care now."
"No delays."
"If anything happens to that baby, every specialist in this hospital answers to me."
The staff moved immediately.
Nobody questioned his orders.
As the stretcher disappeared down the hallway, Dr. Carter slowly turned toward Isabella.
She forced another tear down her cheek.
"I can explain."
"You will."
His calm voice somehow sounded more terrifying than shouting.
"After security delivers every second of surveillance footage from this floor."
The color drained from Isabella's face.
Surveillance?
Her mind raced.
She remembered checking the mirrors.
The hallway.
The elevators.
But...
She had never looked at the ceiling inside the suite.
Hidden behind an elegant brass light fixture sat a small security camera, its lens pointed directly toward the center of the room.
Every shove.
Every kick.
Every lie.
It had recorded everything.
May you like
For the first time that night, Isabella realized she wasn't the one in control anymore.
She was the one trapped.
