Chapter 4 – The Press Conference

By noon, the quiet hospital had transformed into the center of a media storm.

News vans lined the streets.

Helicopters hovered overhead.

Reporters crowded behind temporary barricades, each hoping to be the first to capture a statement from the Thorne family.

Inside the hospital, however, the atmosphere was very different.

It was calm.

Deliberate.

Controlled.

Marcus Thorne intended to keep it that way.

Khloe had finally fallen asleep.

The medication had eased the pain in her ribs, but every few hours a nurse checked both her condition and the baby's heartbeat.

Dr. Nathan Carter quietly reviewed her latest test results.

Everything looked encouraging.

"The bleeding has stopped," he told Marcus.

"The baby is responding well."

Marcus nodded.

"And Khloe?"

Nathan smiled for the first time since the attack.

"She'll need time to recover emotionally, but physically, she's stronger than we feared."

Marcus exhaled slowly.

"Thank you."

Nathan placed a hand on his shoulder.

"You can thank me by making sure no one ever threatens her again."

Marcus didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

At one o'clock that afternoon, Marcus stepped into a private conference room with his legal team.

His attorney, Victoria Hale, had already prepared a stack of documents.

"The police are moving forward with felony assault charges," she said.

"They've also requested that the court deny bail until the initial hearing."

Marcus looked at her.

"Based on what?"

Victoria slid the security report across the table.

"The judge is concerned about witness intimidation."

"Apparently, Miss Rossi has significant political and financial connections."

Marcus wasn't surprised.

"Anything else?"

Victoria hesitated.

"We've discovered she contacted three members of the charity gala staff before the police interviewed them."

Marcus's expression hardened.

"To influence their statements?"

"Most likely."

Nathan, who had joined the meeting, crossed his arms.

"Fortunately, none of them changed their testimony."

Marcus stood and walked toward the window.

"The truth doesn't need help."

He turned back.

"But lies always do."

Meanwhile, Isabella sat alone in an interrogation room at the downtown police headquarters.

Hours had passed.

No one had come to rescue her.

Finally, the door opened.

A sharply dressed attorney entered carrying a leather briefcase.

"Miss Rossi."

She immediately stood.

"Richard."

Richard Lawson had represented some of the wealthiest families in the state.

If anyone could get her out of this mess, it was him.

He sat down quietly.

"I've reviewed the evidence."

"Good," Isabella replied quickly.

"You know this was blown out of proportion."

Richard didn't answer.

Instead, he opened his laptop.

The hospital surveillance video began to play.

When it ended, he closed the screen.

"I have one question."

She nodded eagerly.

"What is it?"

"Why did you kick her?"

The question hit harder than any accusation.

"I..."

Richard waited.

"There has to be an explanation."

"There isn't."

His voice remained calm.

"You weren't defending yourself."

"You weren't cornered."

"You weren't threatened."

"You approached her."

"You shoved her."

"You kicked a pregnant woman while she was already on the floor."

Isabella looked away.

Richard sighed.

"I'm an attorney."

"I defend people every day."

"But I can't defend something that happened exactly as everyone can see."

For the first time, Isabella realized even her own lawyer wasn't trying to prove her innocence.

He was trying to limit the damage.

That evening, Marcus made a decision that surprised everyone.

Instead of avoiding the media, he called a press conference.

Dozens of reporters packed into the hospital auditorium.

Cameras flashed as Marcus stepped behind the podium.

He wore a simple navy suit.

No dramatic entrance.

No prepared theatrics.

Only quiet confidence.

He looked directly into the cameras.

"My wife is recovering."

"I'm grateful to the medical team whose quick response protected both her and our unborn child."

He paused.

"I will not discuss the criminal investigation."

"That is now in the hands of law enforcement."

A reporter raised her hand.

"Mr. Thorne, do you have anything to say to the woman accused of attacking your wife?"

Marcus looked at her calmly.

"Yes."

The room became silent.

"I hope she receives a fair trial."

Another reporter quickly followed.

"Many people expected you to settle this privately."

Marcus shook his head.

"No amount of money should place someone above the law."

A third reporter called out.

"Will you seek financial damages?"

Marcus answered without hesitation.

"This case has never been about money."

"It's about accountability."

Millions of viewers watched the broadcast live.

His words spread across social media within minutes.

Public opinion shifted almost instantly.

People who had once admired Isabella's glamorous lifestyle now questioned everything they thought they knew about her.

Late that night, Marcus returned to Khloe's room.

She was awake, watching the city lights through the window.

"I saw the press conference," she said softly.

Marcus smiled.

"I hoped you were resting."

"I was."

She reached for his hand.

"You could have destroyed her in front of the cameras."

"I could have."

"But you didn't."

Marcus sat beside her bed.

"My father taught me something when I was a boy."

"What?"

"He said that revenge makes headlines."

"But justice lasts."

Khloe leaned her head against his shoulder.

Outside, the city continued to buzz with speculation.

Inside the hospital room, husband and wife sat together in peaceful silence.

Neither of them knew that the investigation was about to uncover something far more disturbing than a single violent assault.

Hidden within Isabella Rossi's past was a secret that connected her to the Thorne family long before Marcus had ever met Khloe.

And once that secret surfaced, the attack at the hospital would no longer be the biggest scandal of all.
