Chapter 2 – The Security Footage

The doors to the Maternal Intensive Care Unit closed behind Khloe's hospital bed with a soft hiss.

Marcus stood outside the room, his fists clenched so tightly that his knuckles had turned white. Every instinct told him to stay beside his wife, but Dr. Nathan Carter had insisted that the medical team needed space.

"We'll take good care of her," Nathan had said. "Right now, the best thing you can do is let us work."

Marcus nodded, though every second felt unbearable.

A nurse emerged a few minutes later.

"Mr. Thorne?"

He looked up immediately.

"Your wife has a bruised rib, significant trauma to her abdomen, and elevated blood pressure from the stress. Fortunately, the baby's heartbeat remains strong. Dr. Carter wants to keep her under close observation for at least forty-eight hours."

Marcus released a breath he hadn't realized he was holding.

"Can I see her?"

"For a few minutes."

Inside the softly lit room, Khloe rested against a raised hospital bed. An IV ran into her arm, and several monitors tracked both her heartbeat and the baby's.

Her face was pale, but when she saw Marcus, she managed a faint smile.

"You stayed."

He pulled a chair beside the bed and gently took her hand.

"There wasn't anywhere else I could be."

Tears filled Khloe's eyes.

"I thought..." she whispered. "I thought she'd hurt the baby."

Marcus leaned forward and kissed her forehead.

"She won't touch either of you again."

Khloe searched his face.

"You believe me?"

Marcus looked almost offended.

"I walked into that room and saw fear on only one face."

He brushed a strand of hair away from her forehead.

"Yours."

A tear rolled down Khloe's cheek.

"I never fought back."

"I know."

Outside the room, Dr. Nathan Carter stepped into the hospital's Security Operations Center.

Rows of surveillance monitors covered one wall. Every hallway, elevator, and private suite in the hospital appeared on the screens.

The security director stood as Nathan entered.

"I already have the footage ready."

Nathan's expression remained calm.

"Play everything from Suite Twenty-Eight beginning thirty minutes before the incident."

The video appeared.

At first, nothing seemed unusual.

Khloe entered the suite alone after leaving the charity gala downstairs. She removed her heels and slowly sat on the sofa, rubbing her aching back.

A few minutes later, Isabella Rossi knocked once before walking inside without waiting for an invitation.

Nathan folded his arms.

"Continue."

The conversation had no audio, but the body language spoke volumes.

Khloe stood.

She pointed toward the door.

Clearly asking Isabella to leave.

Instead, Isabella stepped closer.

Closer still.

Then came the first shove.

Khloe stumbled backward into the marble table.

Nathan's jaw tightened.

The second shove followed almost immediately.

Khloe lost her balance again.

The crystal champagne flute crashed onto the floor.

Then came the moment that made everyone in the room fall silent.

Khloe was already on the ground.

She wasn't threatening anyone.

She wasn't even standing.

She curled around her stomach, desperately shielding her unborn child.

Isabella looked down at her.

Paused.

Then deliberately lifted one leg.

Her stiletto heel drove directly into Khloe's side.

No hesitation.

No accident.

No self-defense.

A calculated kick.

The security director muttered under his breath.

"My God..."

Nathan didn't answer.

His eyes never left the screen.

A few seconds later, Marcus burst through the door.

The recording showed Isabella instantly changing.

She staggered backward.

Covered her mouth.

Pretended to cry.

Pointed at Khloe.

Nathan stopped the video.

"Save three encrypted copies."

"They're already backed up."

"I want one sent directly to hospital legal counsel."

The director nodded.

"And another?"

Nathan looked toward the hallway.

"To the police."

The director hesitated.

"Mr. Thorne's family usually prefers handling matters privately."

Nathan's gaze hardened.

"Not this time."

Meanwhile, on the executive floor, Isabella sat alone in a private conference room.

She checked her phone for what felt like the hundredth time.

No messages.

No calls.

No support.

Finally, the door opened.

A hospital attorney entered carrying a tablet.

Behind him stood two uniformed police detectives.

Isabella rose slowly.

"What is this?"

One detective placed a sealed evidence envelope on the table.

"We've reviewed preliminary security footage from your hospital suite."

Her heart skipped.

The attorney tapped the tablet.

The frozen image on the screen showed exactly what Isabella feared most.

Her foot striking Khloe.

The detective looked directly into her eyes.

"Ms. Rossi..."

"You are under investigation for felony assault resulting in bodily injury to a pregnant woman."

For the first time since the attack, Isabella had no rehearsed explanation.

May you like

Only silence.

And the terrible realization that every lie she had carefully prepared had already been destroyed by a camera she never knew existed.
