Chapter 5 – Secrets from the Past

The morning after Marcus's press conference, the atmosphere inside Thorne Global Headquarters was unlike anything the employees had experienced before.
Normally, the executive floor buzzed with quiet confidence.
Today, conversations stopped whenever Marcus walked by.
Everyone knew he hadn't come to discuss quarterly profits or investment strategies.
He had come for answers.
In the top-floor boardroom, Marcus sat at the head of the long walnut table.
Beside him were Victoria Hale, Ethan Cole, and the company's chief investigator, Samuel Grant—a former FBI agent Marcus had hired years earlier to oversee corporate security.
Samuel placed a thick file on the table.
"You asked us to look into Isabella Rossi's background."
Marcus nodded.
"What did you find?"
Samuel opened the file.
"At first, nothing unusual."
"Elite schools."
"Charity boards."
"Luxury brands."
"A carefully polished public image."
Marcus remained silent.
Samuel slid several older documents across the table.
"But about twelve years ago..."
"She disappeared."
Victoria frowned.
"What do you mean, disappeared?"
"There are almost no public records for nearly eighteen months."
"No interviews."
"No business appearances."
"No social events."
"It's as if someone erased her from public life."
Marcus leaned forward.
"And after those eighteen months?"
Samuel handed him another document.
"She suddenly returned."
"Different city."
"Different social circle."
"And shortly afterward..."
He paused.
"She began pursuing a relationship with you."
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
"You think that was intentional?"
Samuel answered carefully.
"I think meeting you wasn't an accident."
Across town, Khloe remained in the hospital under observation.
Although the doctors were pleased with her physical recovery, they worried about her emotional state.
Dr. Nathan Carter entered her room carrying fresh coffee.
"Mind if I join you?"
Khloe smiled faintly.
"You never wait for permission."
Nathan laughed softly.
"I suppose I don't."
He sat beside her.
"You've barely touched your breakfast."
"I'm not hungry."
Nathan studied her face.
"What are you really thinking?"
Khloe looked down at her hands.
"I keep replaying it."
"The shove."
"The kick."
"I close my eyes..."
"And I'm back on that floor."
Nathan reached over and gently squeezed her shoulder.
"Trauma has a way of doing that."
She swallowed hard.
"I've never hated anyone."
"But every time I think about Isabella..."
"I feel angry."
Nathan nodded.
"That's human."
"The important thing is what you do with that anger."
Khloe looked toward the window.
"I don't want revenge."
"I just want my baby to be safe."
Nathan smiled warmly.
"Then you're already stronger than the person who attacked you."
Meanwhile, Isabella sat inside the county detention center awaiting her bail hearing.
The small holding cell felt colder than she expected.
Gone were the designer dresses.
Gone were the expensive perfumes and glamorous parties.
She now wore a plain gray jail uniform.
Across from her sat Richard Lawson.
He looked exhausted.
"I spoke with the prosecutor."
"What did they say?" Isabella asked quickly.
"They're opposing bail."
Her heart sank.
"What?"
"They believe you may interfere with witnesses."
"I wouldn't—"
Richard raised a hand.
"They also recovered deleted messages from your cloud backup."
Isabella froze.
"Deleted?"
"You told someone to 'make sure the gala staff remembered the right version of events.'"
She buried her face in her hands.
"I panicked."
Richard sighed.
"The prosecution calls that witness tampering."
Silence filled the room.
Finally, Isabella whispered,
"Am I going to prison?"
Richard didn't answer immediately.
"I don't know."
"But I do know this."
"The woman who walked into that hospital believing she was untouchable..."
"...doesn't exist anymore."
Later that afternoon, Samuel Grant returned to Marcus with another discovery.
"This one concerns me."
Marcus looked up from his desk.
"What is it?"
Samuel handed him a faded newspaper clipping.
The headline was more than a decade old.
FINANCIER ADRIAN THORNE SURVIVES CORPORATE SABOTAGE SCANDAL
Marcus immediately recognized the name.
His father.
"I remember this."
Samuel nodded.
"The company nearly collapsed."
Marcus frowned.
"It was ruled an internal fraud."
"So everyone believed."
Samuel placed another photograph beside the article.
Marcus stared at it.
The image showed several executives leaving the courthouse.
Standing in the background was a young woman with long dark hair.
She wasn't looking at the cameras.
She was looking directly at Adrian Thorne.
Marcus's pulse quickened.
He flipped the photo over.
Written on the back was a date.
And a single handwritten name.
Isabella Rossi.
Marcus looked up sharply.
"She was there?"
Samuel nodded.
"Years before she ever met you."
Marcus stared at the photograph again.
His mind raced.
That wasn't coincidence.
That was history.
Someone had been watching the Thorne family for much longer than anyone realized.
That evening, Marcus returned to the hospital.
Khloe was reading quietly when he entered.
She immediately noticed the photograph in his hand.
"What happened?"
Marcus sat beside her.
"I think this attack..."
He hesitated.
"...started long before either of us knew Isabella."
Khloe looked confused.
"What do you mean?"
Marcus handed her the faded newspaper clipping and the old photograph.
She studied them carefully.
Then her eyes widened.
"Marcus..."
"This picture..."
He nodded slowly.
"She didn't come into our lives by chance."
Khloe looked back at the image of the young Isabella standing outside the courthouse.
There was something chilling about the expression on her face.
She wasn't smiling.
She wasn't frightened.
She looked... patient.
As though she had been waiting.
Planning.
Watching.
For years.
And somewhere in another part of the city, a man who had never spoken publicly about the Thorne family opened a locked safe inside his study.
He removed an old leather folder marked with a single name:
Project Legacy.
After reading the morning headlines, he quietly whispered to himself,
May you like
"So... it has finally begun."
Then he picked up his phone and dialed a number that had not been used in over ten years.
