Chapter 9: The Man Who Vanished

A stunned silence settled over the Hale Regency Hotel.
No one seemed willing to speak the name again.
Richard Ashcroft.
Emma looked from Detective Brooks to Victoria, confused.
"I've never heard of him."
"You wouldn't have," Brooks replied. "Most people your age haven't."
He took the silver locket from Detective Ramirez and studied the tiny photograph inside.
"But twenty years ago, Richard Ashcroft's disappearance made national headlines."
Harold slowly nodded.
"I remember."
"He owned half the city."
"And then one morning..."
"He simply vanished."
Several guests murmured in recognition.
One older woman stepped forward.
"My husband worked for Ashcroft Industries."
"They searched for Mr. Ashcroft for months."
"They never found him."
Detective Ramirez folded her arms.
"The investigation eventually went cold."
"The official theory was that he fled the country."
Brooks shook his head.
"That was only a theory."
Emma looked at Victoria.
"My mommy knew him?"
Victoria hesitated.
Then she nodded.
"Yes."
"Were they friends?"
"No."
"Were they enemies?"
Victoria looked down at the marble floor.
"I don't know if 'enemy' is the right word."
Emma frowned.
"Then who was he?"
Victoria took a slow, shaky breath.
"He was my employer."
The lobby erupted in whispers.
"You worked for him?"
Victoria nodded.
"I was twenty-four."
"I had just finished graduate school."
"I was hired as a junior financial analyst at Ashcroft Industries."
Harold added quietly,
"Claire worked there too."
Emma looked surprised.
"My mommy?"
Victoria smiled sadly.
"That's where we met."
"She worked in accounting."
"We became friends almost immediately."
Lillian nodded.
"They were inseparable."
Victoria looked toward Emma.
"We rented a small apartment together."
"We shared everything."
"Our dreams."
"Our worries."
"Our future."
Emma smiled faintly.
"My mommy never told me that."
Lillian gently squeezed her granddaughter's shoulder.
"There were many things your mother never got the chance to tell you."
Detective Brooks stepped closer.
"What kind of man was Richard Ashcroft?"
Victoria's expression darkened.
"Brilliant."
"Charismatic."
"Respected."
She paused.
"And terrifying."
The room grew still.
"He controlled everyone around him."
"No one questioned him."
"If they did..."
She looked away.
"They didn't stay very long."
Brooks narrowed his eyes.
"Were employees afraid of him?"
Victoria nodded.
"Every day."
Emma quietly asked,
"Was Mommy afraid?"
Victoria didn't answer immediately.
"At first..."
"No."
"Claire believed everyone deserved the benefit of the doubt."
A faint smile crossed Victoria's face.
"She always believed people could change."
"But then..."
Victoria's smile disappeared.
"She found something."
Detective Ramirez spoke.
"The financial records?"
Victoria nodded.
"They weren't ordinary bookkeeping errors."
"They showed money disappearing."
"Hundreds of millions of dollars."
"Transferred through shell companies."
"Fake charities."
"Foreign accounts."
The guests exchanged shocked looks.
"Embezzlement?" someone whispered.
Victoria nodded slowly.
"And much worse."
Brooks looked at her carefully.
"Did Claire copy the records?"
"Yes."
"Where did she hide them?"
Victoria looked at the silver key lying on the marble floor.
"I think..."
"...inside Locker 317."
Emma stared at the key.
"So Mommy kept the proof."
Victoria nodded.
"She said if anything happened to her..."
"...someone else would finish what she started."
Lillian's voice trembled.
"She believed the truth mattered more than her own safety."
Detective Brooks frowned.
"If Ashcroft knew she had those records..."
Victoria closed her eyes.
"He had a reason to silence her."
No one argued.
The conclusion seemed obvious.
Emma looked frightened.
"Did he..."
She couldn't finish the question.
Victoria slowly shook her head.
"I don't know."
"But I know this."
She looked directly at Detective Brooks.
"The night Claire disappeared..."
"She called me."
Brooks immediately took out a notebook.
"What time?"
"About 8:40 p.m."
"What did she say?"
Victoria's hands began shaking again.
"She said..."
"...'If I don't make it, promise me you'll protect Emma.'"
Emma felt tears welling in her eyes.
Victoria continued.
"I asked where she was."
"She said she was coming to meet me."
"But she sounded terrified."
Brooks wrote quickly.
"Did she mention Ashcroft?"
Victoria nodded once.
"She said..."
Victoria's voice became barely audible.
"'He knows.'"
A chill swept through the room.
"'He knows I copied everything.'"
Detective Ramirez exchanged a grim look with Brooks.
"Then what happened?"
Victoria stared blankly ahead.
"The line went dead."
"I kept calling."
"No answer."
"So I drove here."
Harold quietly added,
"She waited all night."
Victoria nodded.
"I waited until sunrise."
Emma whispered,
"But Mommy never came."
Victoria slowly shook her head.
"No."
Detective Brooks looked toward the torn handbag.
"If the evidence really is in Locker 317..."
He picked up the silver key.
"...then we may finally learn what Claire died trying to protect."
Before anyone could respond, Detective Ramirez's phone rang.
She glanced at the screen.
Her expression changed instantly.
"It's headquarters."
She answered.
"Ramirez."
The lobby was so quiet that everyone could hear fragments of the conversation.
"...Yes..."
"...What?"
"...Are you certain?"
She slowly lowered the phone.
Brooks immediately noticed her face.
"What happened?"
Ramirez looked around the room before speaking.
"We just ran Richard Ashcroft's name through the national database."
"And?"
She swallowed.
"There was a classified file attached to his case."
Brooks frowned.
"I've never heard of that."
"Neither had I."
"What does it say?"
Ramirez took a slow breath.
"It says Richard Ashcroft..."
She paused.
"...wasn't just under investigation for financial crimes."
Emma held her grandmother's hand tighter.
Brooks' voice dropped.
"What else?"
Ramirez looked directly at Victoria.
"The FBI suspected he was involved in multiple disappearances."
The lobby fell silent.
Then she spoke the sentence that made Victoria's heart stop.
"And Claire Bennett..."
May you like
She looked down at the report on her phone.
"...was listed as his final known witness."
