Chapter 2: The Photograph on the Marble Floor

The faded photograph slid across the polished marble until it stopped at the polished toe of an elderly man's shoe.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

For several long seconds, the only sound in the Hale Regency Hotel lobby was the steady rain tapping against the towering glass windows.

Victoria Hale stared at the photograph as though it were alive.

"No..." she whispered under her breath.

Emma looked at it too, confusion replacing the determination on her young face.

She had never seen the picture before.

She hadn't even known what was inside the handbag.

She only knew she had been told to protect it.

The elderly man bent down carefully and picked up the photograph.

Before Victoria could stop him, he turned it over.

His eyebrows slowly lifted.

"What is it?" someone asked.

He hesitated.

Then he looked toward Victoria.

"I think... everyone should see this."

Victoria stepped forward.

"Give that to me."

There was an edge of panic in her voice now—a tone no one had ever heard from the woman known for absolute composure.

The man didn't hand it over.

Instead, he quietly held the photograph where those closest could see it.

A wave of whispers swept through the lobby.

"It's her..."

"That's Victoria..."

"But who's holding the baby?"

Phones immediately shifted from recording the little girl to zooming in on the old photograph.

Victoria reached for it again.

"I said, give it back!"

The man stepped away.

"Mrs. Hale... would you mind explaining why this picture looks like it was taken twenty years ago?"

Victoria's lips parted, but no answer came.

Emma slowly walked closer.

She stood beside the man and looked at the faded image.

The woman in the picture was unmistakably younger, her elegant features softer than they were now.

She wasn't dressed in expensive designer clothing.

She wore a simple white blouse and blue jeans.

Her hair was tied back casually.

Most surprising of all...

She was smiling.

Not the practiced smile used for magazine covers or charity galas.

A real smile.

Standing beside her was another young woman with dark hair and gentle eyes.

The two women each had one hand resting on a baby wrapped in a pale yellow blanket.

Someone in the crowd frowned.

"Wait..."

"There are two women."

"And one baby."

Another guest leaned in.

"It almost looks like..."

He stopped himself.

"What?" someone asked.

The man swallowed.

"It looks like they're both the baby's mother."

The lobby buzzed with speculation.

Victoria finally snatched the photograph from the elderly man's hand.

"This is none of your business."

Her voice cracked.

It was only a fraction.

But everyone heard it.

Emma looked up at her.

"You know her."

Victoria stared down at the child.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"The other lady."

Emma pointed toward the photograph.

"You miss her."

For a moment, Victoria's expression changed.

Just for a heartbeat.

Sadness.

Real sadness.

Then it disappeared behind the familiar wall of control.

"You've imagined enough stories for one night."

Before anyone could respond, another object slid from the torn handbag.

A thick cream-colored envelope.

It landed directly in front of the younger security guard.

Across the front, written in neat blue ink, were only six words.

To Be Opened If I Disappear

The guard blinked.

"What is that?"

Victoria's eyes widened in horror.

"No!"

She lunged forward.

The guard instinctively picked up the envelope before she could reach it.

"Mrs. Hale?"

"Give it to me."

"It's addressed to—"

"I know exactly what it says!"

Her voice echoed across the lobby.

Guests jumped.

Emma stared at Victoria.

"You've seen it before."

Victoria's breathing became uneven.

"I said give it back."

The older security guard stepped between them.

"I don't think that's a good idea."

"This is my personal property."

"Perhaps."

"But if this envelope contains information connected to a missing person..."

His sentence hung unfinished.

The crowd grew even quieter.

Missing person?

The words spread through the lobby like wildfire.

The concierge looked at the hotel manager.

The manager looked at Victoria.

Even the pianist had left his bench and was standing among the guests.

Emma rubbed her cold hands together.

The older guard crouched to her level.

"Sweetheart..."

She looked at him.

"Can you tell me where you found this bag?"

Emma nodded slowly.

"In the rose garden."

"Behind the fountain?"

"Yes."

"Were you alone?"

She hesitated.

Then she whispered,

"No."

The guard exchanged a glance with his partner.

"Who was with you?"

Emma looked toward the rain-covered windows.

As if expecting someone to be standing outside.

"My grandma."

"Where is she now?"

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

"She couldn't come."

"Why not?"

The little girl swallowed hard.

"Because she's in the hospital."

"And before I left..."

Emma reached into the pocket of her worn sweater.

She pulled out a folded piece of paper, now damp from the rain.

"My grandma told me if I found the lady in the picture..."

She looked directly at Victoria.

"...I had to ask her one question."

Victoria stood perfectly still.

Emma unfolded the note with trembling fingers.

"My grandma said I had to ask..."

Her voice broke.

"...why she left my mommy behind."

The words struck Victoria like a physical blow.

The handbag slipped from her hands.

It hit the marble floor with a dull thud.

Across the silent lobby, every face turned toward Victoria Hale.

Because for the first time in decades...

She looked like a woman haunted by a ghost she thought had been buried forever.
