Chapter 11: The Truth Behind the Birth Certificate

Emma stared at the birth certificate in Detective Brooks' hands.

The words blurred as tears filled her eyes.

Father: Richard Alexander Ashcroft.

She looked at her grandmother.

Then at Victoria.

Finally, back at the document.

"No..."

Her voice was barely a whisper.

"That's not possible."

Lillian reached for the certificate with trembling hands.

Brooks carefully passed it to her.

She adjusted her glasses and read every line.

When she reached the father's name, she closed her eyes.

"I prayed this wasn't true."

Emma looked at her in disbelief.

"You knew?"

Lillian slowly shook her head.

"I suspected."

"But I never had proof."

Emma's heart sank.

"You never told me."

Lillian took her granddaughter's hands.

"Because I wanted you to grow up knowing your mother's love—not the evil of the man who helped bring you into this world."

Victoria wiped away a tear.

"Claire wanted the same thing."

Emma turned toward her.

"You knew too?"

Victoria hesitated.

Then she answered honestly.

"I knew Claire was pregnant."

"I knew she refused to tell anyone who the father was."

"But she never told me his name."

Brooks frowned.

"Then how did this birth certificate end up in the lockbox?"

Victoria looked at the folders spread across the bench.

"Claire must have found it later."

Ramirez examined the certificate more closely.

"Something's wrong."

Everyone looked at her.

"What?"

She pointed to the bottom corner.

"This wasn't the original document."

Brooks leaned in.

"You're right."

"The official seal has been altered."

Victoria frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Ramirez carefully removed the certificate from its plastic sleeve.

Behind it was another folded sheet of paper that had been hidden underneath.

"No one noticed this."

She unfolded it.

It was another birth certificate.

This one looked older.

The official seal was intact.

Brooks compared the two documents.

His eyebrows rose.

"They're different."

Emma's pulse quickened.

"What do they say?"

Brooks took a slow breath.

"The mother's name is the same."

"Claire Elizabeth Bennett."

"And the father?"

Brooks looked at Victoria before answering.

"The father line is blank."

Silence.

Complete silence.

Emma blinked.

"Blank?"

Ramirez nodded.

"The original certificate never identified a father."

She held up the second document.

"The other one was filed later."

"Someone added Richard Ashcroft's name."

Victoria frowned.

"Why would anyone do that?"

Harold answered quietly.

"To control the story."

Brooks nodded.

"If Richard claimed legal paternity, he could gain certain rights."

Emma looked confused.

"What kind of rights?"

Lillian's voice trembled.

"Custody."

Emma's eyes widened.

Victoria suddenly remembered something.

"Oh, my God..."

Everyone turned toward her.

"What?"

Victoria pressed a hand against her forehead.

"The night Claire disappeared..."

"She wasn't just trying to expose financial crimes."

Brooks watched her carefully.

"What else was happening?"

Victoria looked at Emma.

"Claire told me someone wanted to take you away."

Emma felt her stomach tighten.

"Me?"

Victoria nodded.

"She said..."

Victoria struggled to remember every word.

"'If anything happens to me, don't let him have Emma.'"

The room fell silent.

Ramirez looked at the forged birth certificate.

"If Richard Ashcroft filed this later..."

Brooks finished the thought.

"...he could have claimed to be the surviving parent."

Lillian's face turned white.

"He tried."

Everyone looked at her.

"What?"

Lillian slowly sat down on the station bench.

"A week after Claire disappeared..."

"A lawyer came to my house."

Brooks immediately took out his notebook.

"What lawyer?"

"I don't remember his name."

"But he carried papers."

"He said Richard Ashcroft wanted custody of Emma."

Emma stared at her grandmother.

"You never told me."

"I burned the documents."

The detectives exchanged surprised looks.

"You destroyed them?"

Lillian nodded without hesitation.

"Yes."

"I knew my daughter."

"If Claire wanted that man to raise her child..."

"She would have told me herself."

Victoria smiled through tears.

"Claire chose wisely."

Lillian looked at Emma.

"I packed a bag that same night."

"We left town before sunrise."

Emma whispered,

"That's why we moved so much."

Lillian nodded.

"I spent years making sure no one could find us."

Brooks closed his notebook.

"You protected her."

"I did what any mother would do."

Ramirez was studying another folder from the lockbox.

"There are legal documents here."

Brooks joined her.

Most were contracts.

Employment records.

Corporate filings.

Then Ramirez stopped.

"This one."

She carefully unfolded a notarized affidavit.

Her eyes widened.

"This was signed by Claire."

Victoria stepped closer.

"What does it say?"

Ramirez read silently for a moment.

Then looked at Brooks.

"You should hear this."

Brooks took the document.

His voice echoed softly through the storage room.

I, Claire Elizabeth Bennett, swear under penalty of perjury that if anything happens to me or my daughter, the person responsible is Richard Alexander Ashcroft.

Emma gasped.

Brooks continued.

I have given copies of all evidence to someone I trust.

Victoria's breathing stopped.

She knew.

She already knew what came next.

Brooks looked up from the page.

"Victoria..."

His expression was filled with surprise.

"She named you."

Victoria closed her eyes.

Brooks finished reading.

I appoint Victoria Hale as Emma's legal guardian if I am unable to protect my daughter myself.

The words echoed through the quiet station.

Emma looked at Victoria in disbelief.

"My mommy..."

"...wanted you to raise me?"

Victoria's tears finally fell freely.

"Yes."

"But I never knew."

She covered her face.

"I never knew she signed this."

Harold gently placed a hand on her shoulder.

"She trusted you until the very end."

Before anyone could speak again, Detective Ramirez's phone buzzed.

She answered immediately.

"Ramirez."

Her expression changed within seconds.

"Are you certain?"

Brooks frowned.

"What happened?"

Ramirez slowly lowered the phone.

"The FBI just matched fingerprints found on the lockbox."

Everyone waited.

She looked directly at Victoria.

"There was one set belonging to Claire."

"And another..."

May you like

She paused.

"...belonging to someone who is still alive."
