Chapter 12: The Fingerprints That Changed Everything

The room went silent.
Emma held her breath.
Victoria's heartbeat pounded in her ears.
Detective Brooks looked at Ramirez.
"Who?"
Ramirez stared at the message on her phone, reading it again to make sure she hadn't misunderstood.
"The lab compared the unidentified fingerprints from the lockbox with the national database."
She swallowed.
"They found a match."
Brooks took one slow step closer.
"Tell me."
Ramirez looked around at everyone gathered in the storage room.
"The second set of fingerprints belongs to..."
She paused.
"...Michael Donovan."
The name meant nothing to Emma.
Nothing to Lillian.
But the instant Victoria heard it, her knees nearly gave out.
Harold caught her by the arm.
"Victoria."
She whispered the name again.
"Michael..."
Brooks immediately noticed her reaction.
"You know him."
Victoria nodded slowly.
"I thought he was dead."
Ramirez frowned.
"Who is he?"
Victoria took a long, shaky breath.
"Michael Donovan was Ashcroft Industries' chief of security."
"He handled private investigations."
"He made problems disappear."
The words hung heavily in the air.
Brooks wrote the name in his notebook.
"Was he close to Richard Ashcroft?"
Victoria gave a bitter laugh.
"He was more loyal than family."
"If Richard gave an order..."
"Michael carried it out."
Emma looked frightened.
"So..."
"He worked for my father?"
Victoria hesitated before answering.
"Yes."
"But he wasn't just an employee."
"He was Richard's fixer."
Lillian's expression darkened.
"I remember him."
Everyone turned toward her.
"You do?"
She nodded.
"The lawyer who came asking for Emma..."
"He wasn't alone."
"There was another man waiting in a black sedan."
"I never saw his face clearly."
"But..."
She closed her eyes, searching her memory.
"He had a scar."
Victoria's head snapped up.
"Across his left cheek?"
Lillian opened her eyes in surprise.
"Yes."
Victoria looked at Brooks.
"That's Michael."
The detective exchanged a serious glance with Ramirez.
"If he's still alive..."
"He may know exactly what happened to Claire."
Ramirez's phone buzzed again.
She answered immediately.
"Ramirez."
Her face became even more serious.
"Understood."
She ended the call.
"The FBI just sent another update."
"What now?" Brooks asked.
"They've been searching old property records."
She looked directly at Victoria.
"Michael Donovan has been living under a different name."
Harold frowned.
"For twenty years?"
Ramirez nodded.
"He legally changed his identity."
"Three months after Richard Ashcroft disappeared."
Brooks folded his arms.
"That's no coincidence."
Emma quietly asked,
"Can they arrest him?"
Brooks shook his head.
"Not yet."
"We need evidence."
Victoria looked at the lockbox.
"I think Claire left it."
Brooks nodded.
"Let's keep searching."
One by one, they removed the remaining folders.
Most contained financial documents.
Others held photographs.
Then Emma noticed something unusual.
"There's another bottom."
Everyone stopped.
"What?"
Emma pointed inside the metal box.
"The floor looks thicker."
Brooks carefully examined it.
She was right.
The bottom was lined with felt that looked newer than the rest of the box.
He gently lifted one corner.
It peeled away easily.
Beneath it was a hidden compartment.
Inside rested a small digital voice recorder.
Detective Ramirez stared at it.
"This couldn't have been here twenty years ago."
Brooks nodded.
"It's newer."
Victoria frowned.
"Then someone opened the box after Claire died."
A chill swept through the room.
Harold whispered,
"Michael."
Brooks carefully removed the recorder.
A single strip of masking tape had been attached to it.
Written in black marker were four words.
Play This Last
Ramirez looked puzzled.
"There has to be something else."
Brooks reached into the hidden compartment again.
His fingers touched another envelope.
This one was much newer.
The paper wasn't yellowed.
The handwriting wasn't Claire's.
Across the front was written:
To Emma Bennett
Emma frowned.
"That's my name."
Brooks handed it to her.
"There isn't a postmark."
Victoria studied the envelope.
"It wasn't mailed."
Lillian nodded.
"It was placed there."
Emma slowly opened it.
Inside was a single sheet of white paper.
Unlike Claire's elegant handwriting, this message was typed.
Emma began reading aloud.
Emma,
If you're reading this, then you've found the truth your mother tried so hard to protect.
She looked at Victoria.
"Who wrote this?"
No one knew.
She continued.
Claire trusted the wrong people.
I did too.
I've spent twenty years trying to make up for it.
Victoria felt her stomach tighten.
Emma kept reading.
Richard Ashcroft is gone.
But the people who protected him are not.
Detective Brooks exchanged a glance with Ramirez.
Emma read the final lines.
Trust Detective Brooks.
Trust Victoria Hale.
But trust no one else until you've heard the recording.
There was no signature.
Only one handwritten sentence added at the bottom.
I'm finally ready to tell the truth.
Victoria's eyes widened.
She recognized the handwriting immediately.
"No..."
Brooks looked at her.
"What is it?"
Victoria's voice trembled.
"I've seen those letters before."
"Where?"
She looked at the note again.
"In Michael Donovan's office."
Silence filled the room.
Emma slowly lowered the page.
"So..."
"The man who worked for Richard..."
"...left us this?"
Victoria nodded.
"It looks that way."
Brooks carefully picked up the digital voice recorder.
"If Michael really left this..."
He turned it over.
"There may be a reason."
He pressed the power button.
The small screen flickered to life.
One audio file appeared.
Its title consisted of only three words.
My Final Confession.
No one spoke.
Brooks looked around the room.
"Once we play this..."
"There may be no turning back."
Emma reached for her grandmother's hand.
Victoria closed her eyes.
Harold gave a silent nod.
Brooks pressed PLAY.
Static crackled through the tiny speaker.
Then an older man's tired voice filled the room.
"My name..."
The voice paused, taking a shaky breath.
"...is Michael Donovan."
May you like
He hesitated.
"And I helped destroy Claire Bennett's life."
