Chapter 13: Michael Donovan's Confession

The recording filled the small storage room.
No one dared interrupt it.
Michael Donovan's voice was older than Victoria remembered—slower, rougher, weighed down by years of regret.
"If you're hearing this recording... then I'm probably dead."
Emma instinctively looked toward Detective Brooks.
He quietly nodded for everyone to remain silent.
The confession continued.
"My name is Michael Donovan."
"For twenty-two years, I worked for Richard Ashcroft."
"People called me his head of security."
"The truth is... I was the man who cleaned up his messes."
Victoria closed her eyes.
She had known.
But hearing Michael admit it made the truth far more real.
"Richard wasn't just a businessman."
"He controlled judges."
"He bribed politicians."
"He paid police officers."
"And when money wasn't enough..."
The recording paused for a moment.
"...he used fear."
Emma squeezed her grandmother's hand tighter.
Lillian whispered, "Dear God..."
Michael continued.
"Claire Bennett was never supposed to discover the financial records."
"She found them by accident."
Detective Brooks quickly jotted down every word.
"At first Richard believed she could be bought."
"She refused."
Victoria remembered Claire's stubborn smile.
"If something's wrong, someone has to stop it."
Those had been her exact words.
The recording played on.
"Then Richard offered her a promotion."
"She refused again."
"After that..."
Michael took a long breath.
"...Richard decided she had become a liability."
The room fell silent.
Emma felt tears sliding down her cheeks.
Victoria looked away.
She couldn't bear to see the pain on the little girl's face.
Michael's voice became shakier.
"I was ordered to follow Claire."
"To learn where she kept the evidence."
"Instead..."
Another pause.
"...I learned she had a baby."
Emma lowered her head.
"Richard didn't know about the child."
Detective Ramirez frowned.
"So he found out later."
Brooks nodded silently.
The recording continued.
"When Richard discovered Emma existed..."
"Everything changed."
Victoria's heart sank.
Michael spoke again.
"He demanded a DNA test."
Emma looked confused.
"A DNA test?"
Lillian gently stroked her hair.
"It means he wanted proof."
Michael answered the question as if he could hear them.
"Richard believed Emma was his daughter."
"Claire denied it."
Victoria frowned.
"She denied it?"
Lillian nodded slowly.
"She would have."
Emma looked at her grandmother.
"Why?"
"Because she wanted to keep you away from him."
Michael continued.
"Richard threatened to take Emma through the courts."
"Claire told him she'd disappear first."
Victoria whispered,
"That's exactly what she told me."
Brooks looked at her.
"You knew?"
Victoria nodded.
"The night before she vanished."
The recording crackled briefly.
Then Michael's voice returned.
This time, it sounded broken.
"Richard ordered me to bring Claire to an abandoned warehouse."
Emma stopped breathing.
Victoria's eyes filled with tears.
Harold quietly removed his glasses again.
Michael continued.
"He said he only wanted to talk."
"I believed him."
Another long silence.
Then—
"I was wrong."
No one moved.
Michael's breathing was audible through the speaker.
"Richard lost his temper."
"They argued."
"Claire refused to tell him where the evidence was."
Victoria covered her mouth.
Michael whispered,
"Richard shoved her."
The room went perfectly still.
"She hit the concrete floor."
Emma gasped.
Michael's voice cracked with guilt.
"She wasn't dead."
"She was unconscious."
Victoria's knees weakened.
Harold steadied her once more.
Michael continued.
"I begged Richard to call an ambulance."
"He refused."
Detective Brooks clenched his jaw.
Michael's next words shattered the room.
"Richard said..."
Static briefly interrupted the recording.
Then the sentence became clear.
"'Dead witnesses never testify.'"
Emma burst into tears.
Lillian wrapped both arms around her.
Victoria cried openly.
Even Detective Ramirez had to look away.
Michael took another shaky breath.
"I couldn't stop him."
"I should have."
"Instead..."
His voice almost disappeared.
"...I helped him cover it up."
Silence.
Absolute silence.
The confession continued.
"We placed Claire in her car."
"We pushed it into the river."
Brooks closed his eyes.
The official accident report.
The missing evidence.
The changing newspaper stories.
Everything suddenly made sense.
Michael kept speaking.
"For twenty years..."
"I've lived with what I did."
"Every morning."
"Every night."
"Claire's face never left me."
Emma wiped her tears.
Victoria whispered,
"I'm so sorry, Claire."
The recording reached its final minutes.
"Richard believed he won."
"He believed no one would ever find the evidence."
Michael gave a weak laugh.
"He never realized Claire had already beaten him."
Brooks frowned.
"What does he mean?"
Michael answered.
"The financial records were only part of her plan."
Everyone looked toward the lockbox.
Michael continued.
"There was another copy."
Victoria's head lifted.
Another copy?
"Claire hid it somewhere Richard never thought to search."
The room fell silent once again.
Brooks leaned closer to the recorder.
"Where?"
Michael's tired voice answered.
"Inside the one place he believed belonged only to him..."
Static crackled loudly.
The audio skipped.
Then returned.
"...his private office."
Detective Ramirez frowned.
"But Ashcroft Industries was demolished years ago."
Michael continued as though he had anticipated the question.
"Not the hidden office."
Victoria's eyes widened.
She remembered.
"There was a private room..."
Harold looked at her.
"You've seen it?"
Victoria nodded slowly.
"Once."
Michael spoke his final words.
"The entrance still exists."
"Behind the original fireplace..."
Static.
"...at Ashcroft Manor."
The recording ended with a soft click.
The tiny screen went black.
No one spoke for nearly a full minute.
Finally, Detective Brooks broke the silence.
"If Michael told the truth..."
He looked at everyone gathered around him.
"...then Claire left enough evidence to expose everything."
Just then, Ramirez's phone vibrated.
She glanced at the screen, then looked up, her face pale.
"Brooks..."
"What is it?"
She swallowed.
"State Police just searched public records."
"And?"
She took a slow breath.
"Ashcroft Manor..."
She paused.
"...was purchased yesterday."
Victoria felt a chill run down her spine.
"By whom?"
Ramirez stared at the name on her screen.
"It wasn't purchased by a company."
"It was purchased by a private individual."
She looked directly at Emma.
"The buyer's name is..."
May you like
Another long pause.
"...Emma Bennett."
