Chapter 8: The Letter Meant Only for Emma

No one reached for the envelope.

Even Detective Brooks kept his gloved hands still.

The words written across the front seemed to carry a weight that belonged to no one else.

For My Daughter Only.

Emma stared at it.

"My... mother wrote that?"

Detective Brooks nodded solemnly.

"It appears she did."

He looked around the lobby before turning back to the little girl.

"I believe this belongs to you."

Very carefully, he handed Emma the envelope.

Her small hands trembled so badly she nearly dropped it.

Lillian gently covered Emma's fingers with her own.

"It's all right."

Emma looked up.

"I'm scared."

"I know."

"What if..."

She swallowed.

"...what if she says goodbye?"

Lillian's eyes filled with tears.

"Whatever she wrote..."

"She wrote it because she loved you."

Emma nodded slowly.

She took a deep breath and broke the faded seal.

Inside was a single folded sheet of paper.

There was also something wrapped in a soft piece of cloth.

Emma carefully unfolded the letter first.

Detective Brooks spoke gently.

"You don't have to read it aloud."

Emma looked around the silent lobby.

Then she shook her head.

"No."

"If Mommy wanted the truth to come out..."

"I want everyone to hear her."

Victoria lowered her gaze.

She wasn't sure she deserved to hear Claire's final words.

Emma unfolded the paper.

The handwriting matched the first letter perfectly.

Her voice was quiet, but every person in the lobby heard every word.

My dearest Emma,

The little girl stopped.

A tear rolled down her cheek.

She had never heard anyone call her that before.

She continued reading.

If this letter has reached you, then I wasn't able to come back.

I am so sorry.

I promised I would always be there to tuck you into bed.

To celebrate your birthdays.

To watch you grow.

If I broke those promises, it wasn't because I wanted to.

Emma's voice began to shake.

Lillian silently wiped away her own tears.

Emma continued.

There is something you must never believe.

Never believe anyone who tells you I abandoned you.

Never believe anyone who says I stopped loving you.

I loved you every second of my life.

Several people in the crowd quietly wiped tears from their eyes.

Even Detective Ramirez looked away for a moment.

Emma kept reading.

Your grandmother is the bravest person I know.

Listen to her.

Trust her.

She will protect you until I can no longer do it myself.

Lillian covered her mouth.

She had never seen this letter before.

Claire had hidden it from everyone.

Emma smiled sadly through her tears.

"You were right, Grandma."

Lillian squeezed her hand.

"No."

"Your mother was."

Emma looked back at the page.

The next paragraph made Victoria's heart stop.

There is one more person you should trust.

Emma hesitated.

Her eyes slowly moved across the words.

Then she looked toward Victoria.

Trust Victoria.

The lobby became perfectly still.

Emma blinked.

Victoria stared back in disbelief.

Emma continued reading.

She isn't perfect.

She makes mistakes.

Sometimes she lets fear make her choices.

But she loves you more than she'll ever admit.

Victoria's breath caught.

"What..."

Emma lowered the page.

"Why would Mommy write that?"

Victoria could only shake her head.

"I don't know."

Lillian looked equally confused.

"Claire never told me she wrote this."

Emma returned to the letter.

The final paragraphs were written in darker ink, as though Claire had pressed harder with her pen.

Emma...

If the day ever comes when Victoria tells you the whole truth...

Forgive her.

Victoria staggered backward.

Harold steadied her once again.

Brooks frowned.

"The whole truth?"

Emma whispered,

"What truth?"

Victoria covered her face.

"No..."

Emma read the final lines.

Because none of this happened the way people will tell you.

And remember one thing...

Victoria didn't just save my life once.

She saved yours.

The letter slipped from Emma's trembling fingers.

It fluttered onto the marble floor.

The lobby fell into stunned silence.

Emma slowly looked at Victoria.

"You..."

Her voice barely existed.

"...saved me?"

Victoria's eyes overflowed with tears.

"I..."

She couldn't finish.

Detective Brooks bent down and picked up the cloth-wrapped object that had fallen from the envelope.

"It's not over."

He carefully unfolded the fabric.

Inside rested a delicate silver locket.

Its surface was scratched with age, but beautifully engraved.

Across the front were two tiny initials.

C & V

Harold inhaled sharply.

"I remember that."

Victoria looked at the necklace and immediately began crying harder.

Claire had worn it every single day.

Brooks gently opened the locket.

Inside were two miniature photographs.

On one side was a young Claire, smiling brightly.

On the other...

Everyone leaned closer.

It wasn't another picture of Victoria.

It wasn't Emma.

It wasn't Lillian.

Detective Ramirez frowned.

"I don't recognize him."

Neither did anyone else.

Except Victoria.

The moment she saw the man's face, all the color drained from hers.

She whispered one name.

"Richard..."

Detective Brooks looked up immediately.

"Who is Richard?"

Victoria stared at the tiny photograph as though it had reached out from the past.

Then, with a voice full of fear, she answered.

"Richard Ashcroft."

The name meant nothing to most people in the room.

But Detective Brooks froze.

He slowly looked at Detective Ramirez.

She had gone pale.

"That's impossible," she whispered.

Emma looked between them.

"Who is he?"

Brooks swallowed hard before answering.

"Richard Ashcroft..."

He looked back at the faded photograph.

"...was one of the most powerful businessmen in this state."

He paused.

"And twenty years ago..."

May you like

His voice grew even quieter.

"...he disappeared without a trace."
