Chapter 8: The Cornered Rat

Heavy iron blast doors slammed shut over the ballroom exits. The Leviathan was officially in lockdown. Panic surged through the crowd as a dozen heavily armed guards stormed the room, their assault rifles raised, targeting the panicked billionaires.

"Nobody moves!" Marcus screamed, his eyes wild and bloodshot. The sophisticated politician was gone; the ruthless mobster had been cornered. "Find the one who did this! Now!"

From the top of the grand staircase, a slow, mocking applause echoed through the cavernous room.

Clap. Clap. Clap.

Every eye in the room darted upward. Elena stood there, leaning casually against the mahogany railing. She had discarded the gold-lace mask. Her striking face, a perfect, haunting replica of her late father’s, was visible to everyone.

"I must say, Marcus," Elena called down, her voice slicing through the frantic murmurs like a diamond cutter. "Your security is almost as pathetic as your attempt to hide your offshore accounts."

Marcus stared at her, the blood draining completely from his face. "Rostova. It’s impossible. You died in the car crash in Geneva!"

"I survived," Elena corrected, descending the stairs with the slow, terrifying elegance of a queen stepping down to the executioner's block. "I survived, I watched you steal my father's legacy, and I waited. Did you really think you could take the king's throne and not face the princess?"

"Shoot her!" Marcus screamed, foam gathering at the corners of his mouth. "Kill her right now!"

The guards raised their weapons, but before a single trigger could be pulled, the lights in the ballroom cut out completely. Pitch blackness swallowed the yacht.

In the darkness, the unmistakable sound of silenced gunshots thwipped through the air, accompanied by the heavy thuds of bodies hitting the floor. When the emergency backup lights flickered on a second later, Marcus’s elite guards were unconscious on the ground.

Standing over them, slipping a sleek, suppressed pistol back into his tuxedo jacket, was Julian Vance.

"I told you, Marcus," Julian said, straightening his cuffs. "I only have eyes for my business partner tonight. And you are bad for business."
