Chapter 11: The Ghost of the Sterlings

Power in New York City is a living, breathing entity. It shifts, it breathes, and it demands respect. For six months following the absolute destruction of the Blackwood empire, the city belonged entirely to Elena Rostova and Julian Vance. Their alliance had forged a corporate monolith that terrified Wall Street and dominated global markets.

But a throne built on conquered enemies is never without challengers.

It was a rainy Tuesday evening when Elena stepped out of her bulletproof Maybach, pulling the collar of her black trench coat against the chill. She was arriving at Sotheby’s for a private, invite-only art auction. Julian was waiting for her in the VIP lounge, holding two crystal glasses of bourbon.

"You're late," Julian murmured, handing her a glass, his eyes sweeping over her flawless emerald-green silk dress that contrasted sharply with the gloomy weather outside.

"Traffic," Elena replied smoothly, taking a sip. "And I had to finalize the acquisition of the entire Sterling Tech patent portfolio. It cost me pennies on the dollar, but the paperwork was tedious."

Julian chuckled, but before he could speak, a cold, arrogant voice cut through the hum of the elite crowd.

"Enjoying the scraps of my family's legacy, Ms. Rostova?"

Elena and Julian turned slowly. Standing at the edge of the velvet rope was a man who bore a striking, sickening resemblance to Richard Sterling. He was tall, dressed in a gaudy, velvet crimson suit, with a cruel sneer plastered across his face.

It was Victor Sterling. Cassandra’s older brother.

Victor had been exiled to Europe years ago after nearly bankrupting his father with underground gambling debts in Monaco. The high society of Manhattan assumed he had drunk himself to death in a gutter. Yet here he was, looking entirely too wealthy and far too confident.

"Victor," Elena said, her voice dropping ten degrees. "I heard you were hiding in Prague, dodging loan sharks. To what do we owe this unpleasant surprise?"

Victor stepped closer, ignoring Julian's lethal glare. "Things change, Elena. You see, while my father and sister were groveling before you, I was making friends. Very powerful, very wealthy friends from Eastern Europe. The Volkov Syndicate sends their regards."

Julian’s posture instantly shifted into a predatory stance. The Volkovs were a notorious Russian conglomerate with ties to the underworld. They were ruthless, bloody, and fiercely territorial. If Victor had their backing, he wasn't just a spoiled rich kid anymore. He was a proxy for war.

"The Volkovs are out of their jurisdiction," Julian warned, his voice dangerously low. "Tell your new masters to stay in Moscow. Or I'll bury them right next to Marcus Blackwood."

Victor laughed, a grating, unhinged sound. "Big words, Julian. But tonight isn't about bullets. It's about this." He gestured to the auction stage, where a covered painting was being wheeled out. "The lost Monet. The centerpiece of tonight's auction. I'm going to buy it, right in front of you, just to prove that the Sterlings are back, and we have deeper pockets than you could ever imagine."

Elena’s eyes narrowed. The Monet was the exact piece she had come to purchase for the lobby of her new flagship hotel.

"Let him try," Elena whispered to Julian, a terrifying, icy smile forming on her lips. "I love a good game."
