Chapter 17: The Traitor’s Price

The emergency board meeting of the Rostova Syndicate was held at 6:00 AM in the underground, blast-proof bunker beneath the Rostova Tower. Twelve of the most powerful executives in the city sat around a circular steel table, looking exhausted and terrified.

Elena stood at the head of the table, pacing slowly like a caged tiger. Julian leaned against the heavy steel door, his arms crossed, his eyes analyzing every microscopic twitch and drop of sweat on the board members' faces.

"Ivan Volkov is a ghost," Elena began, her voice echoing off the concrete walls. "He has no footprint, no digital trail, and no known associates in this city. Yet, he knew exactly which warehouse to strike to bypass Julian's security grid. He knew the patrol schedules. He knew the blind spots."

She stopped pacing and slammed her hands down on the table, making several executives jump in their seats.

"He knew because someone in this room gave him the blueprints," Elena snarled.

The room erupted in frantic denials.

"Ms. Rostova, I swear on my life!"
"Elena, we have been loyal to your father for twenty years!"
"This is madness, it could have been a hack!"

"Quiet," Julian commanded, his voice barely above a whisper, yet it instantly silenced the room.

Elena slowly walked behind the chair of Arthur Pendelton, the Chief Financial Officer. Arthur was in his sixties, a supposed loyalist who had mentored Elena when she was a child. He was sweating profusely, dabbing his forehead with a monogrammed handkerchief.

"Arthur," Elena said softly, resting a hand on his shoulder. "Your daughter, Emily. She attends Oxford, doesn't she?"

Arthur stiffened. "Y-yes, Elena. You know she does."

"And Oxford is very expensive," Elena continued, leaning down to whisper in his ear. "So, imagine my surprise when my auditors flagged a massive influx of untraceable crypto-currency into an offshore trust in Emily’s name yesterday afternoon. Exactly five million dollars. Just enough to buy a man's loyalty, or his soul."

Arthur’s face turned gray. He tried to stand, but Julian’s hand clamped down on his shoulder, forcing him brutally back into the chair.

"They threatened her!" Arthur sobbed, tears streaming down his wrinkled face. "Ivan’s men... they took pictures of Emily at her dorm! They said they would skin her alive if I didn't give them the warehouse security codes! I had no choice, Elena! I have served your family for decades! Have mercy!"

Elena stared down at the man she had once called "Uncle Arthur." The betrayal stung, but she couldn't afford the luxury of a broken heart. In her world, weakness was a death sentence.

"If you had come to me, Arthur, I would have sent an army to protect your daughter," Elena said coldly. "Instead, you sold out my empire and got an innocent watchman killed."

She looked at Julian and gave a single, brief nod.

Julian hauled Arthur out of his chair by his collar. "You're fired, Arthur. And if you so much as breathe a word of this company’s secrets ever again, the Volkovs will be the least of your worries."

As Arthur was dragged sobbing out of the bunker by security, Elena turned to the remaining, terrified board members.

"Now," she said, her eyes flashing dangerously. "Arthur just gave me exactly what I needed to trace the Volkovs' money trail. We are going to war."
