Chapter 18: The Ambush at the Met

Three days later, the annual charity gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art was in full swing. It was the most heavily guarded event of the year, populated by senators, tech billionaires, and Hollywood royalty.
Elena and Julian attended, perfectly composed. Elena wore a stunning, backless gown of midnight velvet, the massive pink "Tear of Aurora" diamond catching the camera flashes on the red carpet. Julian was in a bespoke tuxedo, looking like a lethal James Bond.
They weren't there to socialize. They were there as bait.
Elena had intentionally leaked a fake itinerary to the dark web, suggesting she would be utterly vulnerable at the museum. She knew Ivan Volkov’s ego wouldn't let the opportunity pass. He wanted a public execution to prove his supremacy.
As they walked past the ancient Egyptian artifacts in the Temple of Dendur, the lights in the massive hall suddenly flickered and died. The emergency generators failed to kick on. The distant sound of panicked screaming echoed from the main lobby.
"They're here," Julian whispered, pulling his suppressed pistol from his jacket.
The heavy glass doors of the exhibit shattered, raining diamonds of glass across the marble floor. Six men in tactical gear and night-vision goggles fanned into the room, armed with automatic submachine guns.
"Find the bitch and shoot her!" a heavy Russian accent barked in the darkness. "Leave the man alive to watch!"
Julian pushed Elena behind a massive stone sarcophagus just as a hail of bullets tore through the air, chipping away ancient stone and shattering glass display cases.
"I take the three on the left," Julian said, his eyes perfectly adjusted to the dim moonlight filtering through the skylights.
"I've got the right," Elena replied. She reached down, ripping a slit up the side of her velvet gown to free her legs, and pulled two sleek, matte-black combat knives from the holsters strapped to her thighs. The Iron Empress didn't just know how to run a boardroom; her five years in hiding had been spent training with the deadliest mercenaries on earth.
Julian leaned out, firing three rapid, perfectly aimed shots. Three muffled thuds echoed as the left flank of the hit squad collapsed instantly.
The remaining three mercenaries turned their weapons toward Julian's muzzle flash, but they never got the chance to pull the trigger.
Elena moved like a phantom. She vaulted over a low stone altar, sliding across the polished floor. Before the first mercenary could track her, she drove her knife upward, severing his brachial artery. As he fell, she grabbed his assault rifle, swung it around like a club, and shattered the jaw of the second man.
The final mercenary panicked, firing wildly into the dark. One bullet grazed Julian's arm, tearing through his tuxedo sleeve.
Seeing Julian bleed flipped a switch in Elena's brain. A terrifying, primal rage consumed her. She threw her second knife with lethal precision. It buried itself to the hilt in the final mercenary’s shoulder, pinning him against a stone pillar.
Elena walked slowly up to the surviving hitman, pulling the knife from his shoulder and pressing it against his throat.
"Where is Ivan?" she whispered, her eyes burning like hellfire.
"Go to hell," the mercenary spat.
Elena dug the blade in a millimeter deeper, a thin line of blood trickling down his neck. "If you don't tell me exactly where he is right now, I am going to buy the hospital your mother is currently staying at in Moscow, and I am going to turn off her life support."
The man's eyes widened in sheer terror. He realized then that the stories were true. She wasn't just a rich girl. She was a monster.
"Pier 42," he gasped. "He's waiting on a cargo ship. The Red Star."
Elena pulled the knife away, knocking him unconscious with the heavy hilt. She turned to Julian, tearing a piece of silk from her dress to tie around his bleeding arm.

"Are you okay?" she asked, her ruthless facade dropping for a split second to reveal genuine panic.
Julian pulled her close, kissing her fiercely in the dark, surrounded by shattered history and fallen enemies. "I'm fine. Let's go sink a ship."
